I’m curious how you keep your pva glue and roller from drying out when not in use. I use a brush to put glue on my books, but I really like the idea of rolling the glue on. Thank you so much for the tutorials you make. I’ve learned so much. I’m a newbie to book binding.
@Ceropegia2 жыл бұрын
I do not leave the PVA in the pan overnight. If, during the course of work, I have lunch or am going to leave or an hour or two, I mist the pan and roller with water in a spray bottle and then cover the pan and roller together with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. That's all you need. It will be ready to use when you finish lunch. If you have a plastic pan like mine you do not need to wash the pan, I scrape the PVA into a covered container and seal it. Allow the pan to dry and the PVA will peel out the next time you pick it up to use it. Have fun and thanks for watching.

Very nice tutorial, it really brings back memories of when I first started out with bookbinding about five years ago. Now I study bookbinding full time, and hope to work with it professionally once I've gotten my journeyman's letter.

Good luck with your studies, I hope you will take some time to see some of my other videos. I have spent 40 years making custom bindings for ad agencies, calligraphers, galleries and private clients. I wanted to do leather and in board work but those clients never appeared so I tried to bring the craft into the twentieth century with modern materials, adhesives and techniques for the hand binder to produce items in quantities quickly and efficiently. My specialty was in handling unusual materials, and my emphasis was always on function and ease of use. Wishing you well when you get your letter, thanks for watching

Reading my comment now, I realize I kind of missed the important part of what I was trying to say - that's what one gets for being up in the middle of the night. When I first started, I had some bookbinding books to go from, and having only text and a few illustrations were fine, but for some things I realized that I'd have to see how it was done. So I went to KZbin and found your channel, and your videos have helped me tremendously!

Do you use waxed linen thread to sew your signatures.
@Ceropegia5 жыл бұрын
I used linen binders thread, look for it at Talas on line. You can , depending on what you want use any strong thread. Many people have gone to the colored linen threads for bindings in which the threads are exposed and a part of the decor of the binding. I have in the past in emergencies used linen button threads from a local fabric store. I will always recommend linen over cotton threads in what ever form they come. have fun and thanks for watching.

Does this type of stitch allow the pages to lie flat or should I use coptic? Thanks for sharing and happy retirement.
@Ceropegia5 жыл бұрын
Yes the pages lie flat. Just be sure, as in all books, the grain of the paper is parallel to the spine. Thanks for watching.
@JCSalomon6 жыл бұрын
At the end of the second signature, you attach it to the first with a square knot. Is the kettle-stitch overkill at this point, or is it actually inappropriate?
@Ceropegia6 жыл бұрын
The square knot takes the place of the kettle stitch, if I added a 4th signature there would be a kettle stitch above the square knot. Sewing takes place in a number of my videos, you can see larger books being sewn there. Thanks for watching.

@Sage Reynolds (or anybody who read this and has experience with this) : Do you have any tips on how to cut Glassine paper to size?
@Ceropegia6 жыл бұрын
I don't understand what is happening with the comments. I wrote an answer to this last night. Hans, as you can see I have a board shear and cutting glassine is not difficult because I have a foot pedal clamp, On that tool I cut two sheets and sometimes more at a single cut. If you are cutting by hand I suggest that you make a pattern of the final size and use an olfa knife with a cutting mat. I would put a weight on the pattern of thick binders board with masking tape so it could be used as a handle. When you cut, it is important that you put pressure on the edge of the pattern for the side that you are cutting. I think I used this method to cut large book cloth in one of my other videos. Thanks for watching.

it is so long since I discarded the teflon folders but I seem to remember it was buckram. Particularly black
@Ceropegia5 жыл бұрын
Thank you for writing back to me. I can see where a teflon folder may change the surface of Buckram which already has a semi gloss or semi mat surface. I have used mainly more natural surfaces like the Asahi fabrics, Canapetta, my own paper backed silks and have never had folder marks appear from the teflon folders. The teflon was a saviour for work with the Iris fabrics which can burnish with your own fingernails if you are not careful. I also found that the chisel end was especially helpful on the inside of boxes. Thanks again and happy binding.
@edwardcongdon63455 жыл бұрын
I see you are using a teflon folder. These will mark lots of substrates . A bone one is better. Though it should be rubbed with neatsfoot oil regularly
@Ceropegia5 жыл бұрын
I used bone folders for 30 years and avoided the teflon folders because I thought they had static charge that attracted dust like the sheets of teflon do. I was mistaken. In my experience the teflon has never marked anything. I was bothered with Iris fabric which the bone folders burnished, ruining the matte finish of the cloth. Teflon solved the problem, ( no static either)I have never had it mark or burnish anything from paper to fabric, grass cloth or any other material in my practice. (I did use bone folders when I did leather work) I would like to know what you have found teflon to mark so I can avoid it. Thanks for watching.

Oh, and regarding your Tip the Tutor idea: a lot of people use Patreon for exactly that purpose. Or Ko-fi.
@Ceropegia6 жыл бұрын
I have a patreon but that is a monthly commitment for the donor, and I am supposed to provide some sort of gift or premium. I would like a regular income but my activities are so varied that it's hard to develop a patron. I would like to sell my paper tapestries, there are about 50 in the studio now most for under $700 and around $350. I'm thinking of developing a Facebook store (I am going to try to do that with my Silversmith Gallery page), the ETSY adventure hasn't been reliable and to be a success there I have to treat it like a full time job which takes time away from work in the studio. I will look into Ko-Fi, Thanks.
@taylorcampbell3326 жыл бұрын
I recommend Instagram for spreading the word if you're able to post semi-frequently. A lot of artists that use Tumblr (also an image-based sharing site and a valid option for more of a blog-based format) as their primary social media site have started using Instagram to post in-progress images and "day-in-the-life" type posts that people seem to be interested in. A mix of both sites seems to be more and more common--with Tumblr being a blog for showcasing work, and Instagram for multiple smaller more casual posts and updates.

Hello ! Can you show me how you write on the covers of the book ? Thank you for understanding !
@Ceropegia6 жыл бұрын
I don't understand what you mean by "writing" on the cover unless you mean add a title or a design. That is usually done by gold stamping with foil or without foil for an embossed design. I have in the past cut linoleum which was printed onto the covers. In any case you will need some type of a press. either a nipping press for the linoleum or a stamping press and type for the gold/blind stamping. Aside from that, there are art type of things you can do with paints, brushes, hand cut stamps and inks or paints. As you see in the video this is a single book for a single event and I used the printed postcard on the cover for titling. Thanks for watching.

Mr. Reynolds, I was really looking forward to watching your video having just discovered your channel. Unfortunately I could see very little of your demo because your right hand blocked most of your techniques. Perhaps repositioning the camera to your left would give us newcomers a chance to learn from you?

Hello Madeline, This video is meant for those followers that have already seen my basic videos and already know most of these processes. They are clearly seen in my other videos. This is a variation on the theme of sewn signature bindings. The book made here is something quickly made for a special event. If you want to see more clearly, my other videos on sewing signatures and making cases will be more helpful. Thanks for watching.
