Gosh Andrew I am SO pumped to get to Discovery now!! Will be one of my first reads of 2025 for sure. And totally with you on Murder on the North Pole Express, such a jolly fun time. Also well said on Hell's Chasm, that is exactly how I felt as well. Hope the second half of the year treats you well 🥰

Hope you feel better soon 🤧 I’m glad you read some great books 🥳 I’m still contemplating if I want to read hells chasm. I didn’t vibe with the first book in her long series but might give the standalone a try. And the holographic cover of the king short stories is neat 😍

Interesting about Advent of Winter. I didn't even think of Christmas Advent season. I tuned into "Winter is coming" vibes, with darkness and ice and winds. The cover seems cold to me. Just different expectations, I think.

hahaha, I'm so sorry you were disappointed by the Advent of Winter. I joined last year for the kickstarter and read one story each day. I had no christmas expectations whatsoever. To me an advent thing is just a present every day up until christmas. And this book really was a true present every day. The overall quality is greater than most anthologies I've read.

You know, if I'm being honest with myself, I kinda agree with you about the first part of Wind and Truth. I'm 500 pages in, but I get easily distracted while reading it and haven't been able to reach that flow state. It's starting to get good, though. I'm not giving up yet. I think you could look at the Advent of Winter colors like they're a gloomy and snowy gray day. I didn't think all the stories were grimdark. I haven't finished it, though.

Sorry your reading month isn't going all that well. If you want some lighter, Christmas/winter themed books, you might consider the "Jayne Frost" series by Kristen Painter. They're solidly in the cozy mystery camp, but the characters are fun and the stories flow well. My month has been going pretty well so far. I blew through the last 11 books of the Alex Verus series, several books from John Conroe's Demon Accords series, and the latest two books in Brust's Vlad Taltos series (and a few others). Nothing 5-star yet, but quite a bit of very readable and entertaining fiction.

Funny I had the complete opposite experience with Hell's Chasm, the first 60/70% was like a solid 4⭐ and after that it turned into sort of a cookie cutter ya-ish, horse loving fantasy. As far as the magic system goes, I feel like there wasn't any, which is my preference. Magic's gonna magic.
