On a lovely day near the end of February, I went out to see what I could see, and find whatever there was to find. I found a bottle dump sitting beneath a public park, and had a fun time exploring a place I've driven past many times..

The "really ugly" vase: fill water to the bottom of the little pot shaped part, put a bulb (tulip, jonquil, etc.) into the little pot. You can force the bulbs to bloom in winter on a sunny window sill. Mom had several of these when I was a youngster.

I thank you for helping clean up the environment! I suggest that you obtain a small bucket to carry all your finds. I carry a 2.5-gallon, cat-litter bucket with me when I am out with my metal detector. I pick up everything that I find as it sure makes it easier to carry it all home. I recycle all the metal items that I do not keep and all the trash that I pick up goes into the trash can for proper disposal. Carry on with the good search and remember to recycle all that you do not keep! ;-)

All the rubbish left everywhere provides jobs--that's what a very self centered "friend" of mine would say. She left grocery carts out in the parking lot, not thinking that they took up parking space or might roll away and dent someones car. She unpacked boxes in our office strewing styrofoam in all directions, then looked at the mess and stated, "Well, that's what the janitor is for".

You’re just precious, Tom! I love your videos, your soothing voice of polished diction, your interest in rescuing these relics of the past. Thank YU for this! You’re the best, Tom!
@tomburleigh9261
@tomburleigh9261 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks Deb. Quite a lot of the rubbish wasn't really dumped into the river, but rather washed in off the streets by rain. Still selfish for people to be littering, but I guess most don't realise that it so easily ends up in the rivers, and then the sea. I'm glad you enjoy my videos so much.

That big long metal thing I think it was a part of a lamp the bottom would attach to a stand and the top piece you would attach the bulb and the lamp shade to it. Let me know if you found out exactly what it is. Thanks a lot for a very relaxing video. I am your new subscriber and this was my first video of yours. I found you because of a video that I had seen of the northern mudlarks. I really like that area you would think the people that live around there would make a day of picking up the trash. I think that thing was a handle for some-kind of pump, maybe, just a wild guess. I really like those walkways down to the water looks like a nice place to sit and meditate soak up the sounds and sun and with a cup of tea and a small lunch.
@tomburleigh9261
@tomburleigh9261 4 жыл бұрын
It's quite likely that a lot of the people in the area don't think they can get down to the river; it's so walled in for most of it, and hidden behind a hedge in the park. I do wish there were more community trash pick up days, there used to be more, but the council's funds have been cut considerably in the last decade and no other organisation seems willing to go to the cost of organising it. (would need staff, medics just in case, and insurance). I do agree, there's a lot of good quiet spots by the water to meditate, picnic and enjoy the sounds and sights. 🙂

I would use the big crock to put some kitchen utensils in. I looked for a very long time before I found two containers that were large enough to put things like a potato masher, whisks, ladles, wooden spoons, etc. in. Very handy in the kitchen instead of trying to stuff everything into drawers. I think that metal item was once a gas light during the Victorian era.

Why did cod bottles have a marble in them? What is cod? A fish? It's fascinating to watch, I live in a coastal beach area and we don't have a lock of rocks around, actually, we really don't have a lot of soil, mainly fine sugar sand so the rocks are beautiful to me. I love the age of the area as well, those arches are beautiful. Thanks for sharing...what was that thing we guessed about? : )

a codd bottle is a bottle shaped to house a marble instead of a lid. The marble would be held in place by the pressure from the carbonated water against the rubber seal I believe. To open it you would push the marble down. They are still quite popular in Japan.

Hello from Woodbridge Virginia USA! I've just discovered your videos and find your tone gentle and soothing. I've been watching videos from a couple of other mudlarkers. It's interesting how you each have favorite things to collect. I'm afraid I would grab everything because it's all so fascinating. And I truly appreciate that you gather plastics and soda cans. I hate seeing rubbish like that just thrown on the ground. Keep up the interesting videos!

Very interesting walk Tom. I wish there was somewhere like that near me, I’d be in my element! Once or twice a year I go down to a little known beach in Kent, where the sand is strewn with broken pots and bottles. Occasionally, I get lucky and find a whole one, or bits of clay pipe. To me, it’s just a relaxing couple of hours, with the opportunity to find some interesting bits and pieces.

Sounds like a great beach, and a lovely relaxing time... I'm glad you get to go somewhere like that at least a couple of times a year, sorry you haven't found anywhere decent nearer to where you live though.

T believe the item you found that looks like a large lamp “harp” to hold the shade away from the bulb is just that, but for a hanging gas light, chandelier. The piece with the gnurled finger screw controls the gas coming into the hollow pipes that make up the body of the piece then screws into a gas piece that fits within the area of the glass shade held in place as the tubes second duty. Put on a gold or woven glass mantel, light the gas stream and you have a Very bright light. I’ve seen these in the old Plantation homes near Charleston, South Carolina.

Several You Tube folks have been taken over to TV shows. Dr. Pimple Popper, Toe Bro. Curiousity Inc was asked but declined due to the amount of work taking time from his channel and the hunt for finding antiques and vintage items if I recall correctly. And his family and children. You apparently need to do exactly what they say and take the directions precisely.

Bravo Tom! A great day along the river Calder. Too bad about diggers not replacing soil makes for horrible eroding and unsafe for walkers above them. Gator came all the way from the Florida hurricanes? 🤣🤣 Victorian lamp innards from a hanging lamp over supper table maybe? Snails have 1st dibs on cup! 😂😂😂 Love the Star Wars sack. Thanks for the book and Gravedigger short tale. I must say that I am very happy to receive them. The poems are right up my alley. My mom says I am insane, but at 80, she only reads Quilting books. Well congrats on the fun and productive mudlark. Blessings Jeri-Ann

Thanks so much Jeri-ann, I'm so glad the book arrived safely... and I'm especially glad that it's to your taste. It would be wonderful if the gator survived being taken 3,000 miles by hurricane, possibly if it went via OZ. A hanging Victorian table lamp array is a pretty good guess; one that hadn't crossed my mind. Blessings, Tom.

Great video Tom. Nice pipe. Found some good pieces. Sadly enough likely if one were to ask to dig that spot up for bottles all you could get is a big NO, even if you left the place in tip top shape. Greetings and GL!
@tomburleigh9261
@tomburleigh9261 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks 925inder. Yeah, I don't think I'd ever even bother trying to get a digging permission off a council, there are so many diggers who leave a mess and they wouldn't want to have to repair the damage afterwards, so they never would give permission. And rightly so... it's land held in trust for the enjoyment of all members of society. Those pits left behind will increase errosion speed, and if someone stood unwittingly on top, they could collapse beneath them. Greetings and GL with your own enjoyable videos.
