This film is criminally underrated! It's one of the most historically accurate world war II films ever and with a great cast and acting too! The filmmakers were committed to history on this one. This along with, the Longest Day, Dunkirk (2017 film), Downfall Das Boot, Letters From Iwo Jima and Saving Private Ryan are among my favourite World War II films

Add Thin Red Line (1998) and Stalingrad (1993) to the list when you get to see them. The first is partially filmed in Queensland Australia the second is a Bavarian film, but it looks dated for its age meaning the film clarity is not of the same caliber as the Tom Hanks epic that was Saving Private Ryan (1998).

Probably you're just too young. I do remember seeing a lot of advertising for this film in 1977. But it was probably outshined by Star Wars that did almost no ads. At least I don't remember many. You're right about the cast. Pretty obvious they were going for an epic film to replace "The Longest Day." Oddly enough also with Sean Connery. If you think the cast was impressive on the trailer, you should look it up online. They didn't even mention half of the stars. They're also a few relatively unknowns at the time that became stars.

I was 19 when this came out and via my dad a big WW2 movie buff, so the trailer really flashes me back. You are soo right. Few people remember how things were back then. The Vietnam war movie, "Boys of Company C", had a really hard time being funded, when only a few years later Vietnam war flicks were the rage. In this and in "Boys of Company C", they injected allot of "anti war" theme into the script, lots of action, but lots of anti war as well. They said, "a good war movie, is an anti war movie". At the time, I saw this, I was actually very disappointed. The end was so depressing. Then again...I was 19.

The description of the scale of the battle was a hyperbolic. No battle in WW2 can match the sheer brutality of the Battle of Stalingrad. A piece of action where Major Robert Caine turned the situation around from certain defeat and capture by the Germans to withdrawing to safety

Great film, but I didn't like how they portrayed Gen. "Boy" Browning (Dirk Bogarde). They made him too narrowminded, opinionated, and overall too "gung ho" about Market Garden. He expressed reservations to Monty about the operation; the narrow road, the paratrooper jump in daylight, having to capture and hold seven bridges simultaneously. He coined the phrase "A Bridge Too Far" because Arnhem bridge was so far away from Nijmegen - about 12 miles between Nijmegen bridge and Arnhem bridge. He could not have seen that only one battalion (commanded by the able Col. John Frost) would actually make it to Arnhem Bridge. Browning was justly concerned about a lightly armed force precariously perched on the other side of a river deep in German-held territory.

Great movie with an all-star cast! I didn't recognize Colonel Frost as Anthony Hopkins who later played Hannibal Leckter in 'Silence of the Lambs' just as I didn't recognize Frenchie from 'The Sand Pebbles' who was played by Richard Attenborough. He played Bartlett 'Big X' in 'The Great Escape'. He seemed shorter and had gained some weight. Then again, he was older. Steve McQueen was the main character in that flick. This was another great movie. Many subplots in an insurrection (The Boxer Rebellion) setting not really as well-known like WWII. On that note, I recommend '55 Days at Peking' with Charlton Heston, David Niven, and Ava Gardner. It shows the involvement of foreign governments whose armies fight against the Chinese Boxers who want to remove all foreigners from China. Great cinematography-Battle scenes with many extras as there was no CGI at the time 😁
