This movie is very under-rated in terms of how it was made. All these years later, it stands up as one of the best movies ever for brilliant editing, script, characterization, cinematography, etc.--- all the subtle details that get overlooked. Every scene has great energy and life, and is linked to the next with expert editing. All the characters interact together with a wonderful sense of humour, drama, and realism. I've seen it many times and am always impressed by what a truly wonderful piece of movie-making it is.

I disagree with what you said about the editing...I think the editing and continuity was pretty bad. I liked the story and acting to the nth degree, however.

@@dennismood7476 I agree with you. Also: "All the characters interact together with a wonderful sense of humour, drama, and realism". Sorry what? Makes no sense, sounds like a load of bull. Joe, no offense, but you sound like a guy who picked up all these words like "cinematography" and put them together where it doesnt fit to praise a movie youre a fan of.

Part of the reason why it was so believable is because many of these actors really did serve in WWII: Marvin, 4th Marine Division as a sniper in the Pacific Theater; Bronson, U.S. Army Air Forces in 1943 aerial gunner on a B-29 in the Pacific; Borgnine, destroyer/minesweeper USS Lamberton, and the Atlantic Coast on an antisubmarine warfare ship, the USS Sylph; Ryan, USMC drill instructor from January 1944 to November 1945 at Camp Pendleton; Savalas, US Army Company C, 12th Medical Training Battalion, 4th Medical Training Regiment.

Good points. At the time it came out, 23 years after ww2 the whole Germany thing was still in the belly of most everyone living them, including me as an 11 year old kid. All of our dads had served.

I saw the movie when it first came out and have watched it several times over the years. It was great in 1967, and it is great now. It was a truly great cast, and several of them had served in WW2m inckuding Marvin, Ryan, Savalas and others. I've also read the book many times, on whihc the film was based. If you haven't read the book, suggest doing so. Favorite character is Maggot.

And THIS is how you're supposed to do movie trailers. It does NOT try to a mini-version of the whole story like all modern American trailers do, lays out clearly in a melodramatic, what the story of the movie actually is ("Madame Web" and "The Marvels" are about WHAT again?) and visits with all the characters. They didn't have the Internet in the 1960s. If you wanted people to know what your movie was YOU HAD TO TELL THEM/SHOW THEM.

On Memorial Day let’s remember that America remains free because of the sacrifice of all kinds of men who had one thing in common - they were war fighters willing to die for their country. For those who want an army of the woke, think carefully about what kind of man or woman you want defending this country.

The narration for this trailer sounds as if it was done by the actor Gary Merrill. I believe he also did commercial voiceovers.
