FFXIV Developers: Players are not having fun, we might have done something wrong WOW Developers: Players are not having fun, they might be playing it wrong

I have some fun. Problem is that in order for me to have fun, I must play off meta (shadow priest kyrian). There is like 10% of kyrian priests and probably 9.95% are discipline priests (which I also play). All others are night fae or necrolord. And even with the new change. I don’t like changing covenants for x or y type of content. A talent system would have been better. I’m kyrian and will f stay kyrian. Even if meta says otherwise.

The first time this happened was with the 5.3 patch because of Covid, and a second time now basically for the same reason as they already were behind on schedule. I’m not a progressive but, when progressives say there is toxic masculinity, this is what comes to mind. We men in the west hide our feelings as much as possible. It's a combo of ego and protection from corporate liability. Apologizing is seen as a liability by US corporations and law as apologizing is an admission of guilt for doing something bad. By admitting guilt, they are then held responsible for fixing the mistake and or upholding counter measures to prevent the mistake from happening again. But since those fixes are expensive and can threaten the status quo, the "easiest" way to prevent all that is to never apologize.

That's why he's emotional not just from the feeling responsible but he understands that if he was a player, he himself will be very upset and disappointed. @@SkyknightMu From what he said, the reason they had to delay is because he was going over the story and cutscene models with a fine-toothed comb trying to make sure everything was perfect, and the time it took to implement his feedback meant they couldn't fully complete the QA process in time for the original launch date. So it was either release a product that hadn't been fully tested, or delay the game so they could complete QA. That's why he regards it as selfish, but I don't blame him for wanting to ensure the quality of this expansion above all given the significance of it and the massive influx of new players.

This is why even though I'm gutted that I took a week off for Endwalker that I can't move and I won't get time off on the new release because December in retail is nuts, I'm not mad because I can see just how torn up Yoshi-P was about having to delay this even more than it was already delayed by Covid putting them behind schedule. And to be honest, I know I would feel pretty terrible if they released it on the 19th and I was greeted by a broken game I'd taken time off for, whether that was the second coming of Raubahn Savage or some other issue, so I would rather they took the time to make sure everything works as it should rather than yeet out broken content with the 'oh we'll just patch later' mentality that's become a plague on gaming. Looking at these clips should also tell you why if Blizzard tried to do an ARR move on WoW, it would fail. SE had the will because they understood that saving the Final Fantasy brand's integrity would give them high dividends in future, and they had an absolute miracle in the form of Yoshi-P. Ion and the other WoW devs are too far up their own asses and still riding the 'WoW is unsinkable' mentality while their players flock to other games in the thousands, so they would never do the soul-searching and shock-horror learning from other games that made ARR a success.

If I wanted to criticize, then yes, I think they should have revealed the delay immediately when the decision was made last week rather than holding it until the live letter. To make it worse the second lucrative candy pro alliance changing was the fact that nobody in alliance raids so you could get in the hall of fame laughably easier ( most seasons end with the alliance hall of fame not filled until the very end if at all ), which pretty much states blizzards not only acknowledges the problem, they bet on the problem fixing itself by people paying outrageous prices to swap back and forth constantly for the achiv (hint, it didn't work because guilds don't love forking over 750$) At this point just let people play together.

Well, some of them are taken out of context and anyone watching think they are that outright smug. This is what you need to know about the WoW dev team to make an idea. There is a perpetual cycle they go through in each expansion and this is generalized to give you an idea. It goes like this: -> during Closed beta they receive feedback that they ignore. -> during Open beta they receive feedback that they ignore. -> releases game by ignoring feedback. -> Surprised Pikachu face, players dont like the changes and bleed subscriptions. -> eventually implementing feedback (as if they came up with these ideas) but not to address the issues, just enough to bait subs. This is heavily generalized. WoW players are sick of alot of things. The answer he gave when he got asked why do they nerf demonology was a sarcastic reply because the community before this interview were all pissed off at the nerfs and were all up in arms "is as if blizzard doesnt want us to play demonology". Nevertheless, they overhauled the spec to add a new class born out of demonology design, Demon Hunter. They have a rockstar mentality. Everything is not their fault, we are there to bask in their creations. They do this over and over and over again and it is from this mutual hatred WoW devs and player base these answers are born. I am sick of WoW devs as much as the next guy. I play Samurai in FF14 right now, lvl 70 (right now). Most of Ions answers are taken out of context. His answers are always non-answers. Alot of lawyer talk.

You can honestly feel FFXIV letting you set your own pace and explore your own interests, compared to the constant time-gating and dead sprint to the end that WoW content paces at. I'll always have a great love and appreciation for the massive world, the lore and characters, that began with Warcraft 3 for me and ended with years of on and off again WoW subs. I just can't imagine ever seeing myself renew that subscription again, I'll intake new story bits via helpful youtubers but that's all. It's a difference in philosophy, FFXIV is designed to not be FOMO and let you do the stuff when you want to. Scaling and roulettes let you experience old content years later and people still run it for costumes / mounts / decor. It's kinda bizarre that WoW invests so heavily into FOMO given that they don't really monetize the game to benefit from daily active users. Sadly FOMO is now the prevalent design choice in gaming (thanks mobile garbage) and doesn't seem like its going away. Fear Of Missing Out makes you log in and interact every day until it burns you out and makes you quit, but they hope that active period will milk a lot of money out of your pockets.

I started FFIXV almost 5 years ago, and it's the first pay-to-play I ever gave a chance. I do not and will never once regret that decision. It's so worth it in so many ways, and a dev team that actually cares is a huge part of it. Granted, being that I'm autistic and struggle with change, once I get used to the changes made, I'm fine, and have no complaints (other than missing Flash). I love FFXIV, the story, the characters, the choices, the ability to be everything, mounts, minions, emotes, dances, event content... I love it all. And the community is far more friendly and accepting than any other gaming community I have ever been apart of or even witnessed from the sidelines. I still believe that is true, but not because WoW players are inherently toxic; they are just reflecting the toxicity shown to them by the developers. I know this is true, because once the WoW player quits and takes up 14, their toxicity seems to just melt away. I have been playing 14 since Heavensward, and I was worried that a deluge of WoW ‘refugees’ would destroy my community. Yet I was wrong, if anything they seem to be shocked by what I consider baseline FF14 courtesy. Like the 🌱 surprised our group was okay with them not knowing the content, or waiting for them to watch a cutscene. I see where that came from.

The sad truth is as long as the game is making more net revenue from fewer subscribers, Actiblizz doesn't see a problem. If they are making tons of money, how can they be wrong? Don't get me wrong, I'm not at all defending the current dev team or Blizzard. As long as people keep throwing money at Blizzard, there's no incentive for Blizzard to change any philosophy about anything they are working on. What is probably going to happen long term (think several years going forward) is WoW needs to continue hemorrhaging subs, so net revenue goes down year over year. Then you "might" see a more humble and appreciative dev team.
