Yeah but tbf mario was still the protagonist in the first game. If you think about it, it's weird, even to this day there are very few games that have the name of the antagonist. The diablo series is an example.

Fun fact- for just about every one of Nintendo's super early franchises you didn't actually play as the title character. You've got Donkey Kong, then you've got Kid Icarus, which actually starred a guy named Pit, then you've got Metroid, which of course had you controlling Samus, and Legend of Zelda, where Zelda was the princess, not the main character. So it was kind of a thing for Nintendo!

Nintendo really spent almost 10 years having no idea what to do with DK before thinking "Hey, maybe we should try to do something similar to what Rare was doing? Y'know, what was making it a successful franchise?" And now we're at another dry spell with the series, Tropical Freeze is gonna be 10 years old next year. No shade meant for Xenoblade, I know those are really good games, but I think it's bizarre that we got three Xenoblade games after Tropical Freeze's release, when those sell less than DK and are surely more expensive. Nintendo is so weird, man. What's the holdup?

I feel like the Rare acquisition was full of companies being idiots. No defending Nintendo, then losing Rare was a total fumble, but also apparently Microsoft execs genuinely believed buying Rare meant they owned Donkey Kong and got disappointed when Rare told them it wasn't the case. It's just embarrassing all around!

But scott you are really telling the history of Donkey kong Jr, in DKC and DKL you're STILL just Donkey Kong Jr, merely a grown up version of him that takes the title of Donkey Kong. Hence why the JR is not on the tie. DK (Cranky Kong) will tell you this himself if you listen to him long enough. Truth is aside from character cameos and appearances Donkey Kong himself isn't in games once a grown up Jr takes the spotlight. And the JR is dropped right after Super Mario Kart. He doesn't really come back into action until DKC Tropical Freeze as a character

@@ryko1478 nope, modern DK is DK jr just with the DK title since Cranky Kong has been retired from it since the OG DKC. Hence why he's considered a grown version of DK Jr, jr never appears along side him. Plus it simplifies things while still having a bit of depth to the lineage
