At launch, due to a lack of newer DVD pressing factories, DVDs cost a bit more than CD media, so they only used DVD-ROMs for games that absolutely required the extra data. I.E. The Cube was weird throughout it's lifecycle. I had one and so did some of my friends, but even though we played it a lot we didn't really even notice. Like when friends were over we'd play Kart, Smash or Soulcalibur. One day I asked a friend if he was playing a ton of Cube? We both thought about it and started rattling off titles. Rogue, Eternal Darkness, RE4, Windwaker, Luigi's Mansion, etc. Anyways you get the point, the library is loaded and we beat most AAA titles. Despite that we didn't even realize how great the system was or even how much we were using it until we reflected on it. The whole Cube era was really odd.

Those ps2 and Xbox owners took fanboy-ism to the extreme back then. Edit: Me and my late best friend wanted to test how far my Wave Birds signal could go. He had his Gamecube setup in his dads camper, and he told me to keep going, and keep going, and keep going. I bought GameCube day one and was a fanboy. The disc size and it missing games like gta hurt. It was treated like the unpopular kid a lot. Had some fun games though. Eternal Darkness needs a remake.

It's weird seeing someone who wasn't old enough at the time report on a consoles history "as if they were there" ...
