1. The old testament reads." thou shalt not suffer a poisoner to live." When King James rewrote the Bible, he inserted witch because he despised them. 2. Maleficent is not nor has she ever been a witch. She's a dark fairy 3. Wicker man is about an insane human sacrifice cult; not bearing any resemblance to witchcraft or true Druidry 4. I am a practicing Witch and Pagan. I am thankful you did not even mention Gerald Gardner instead inserting a picture of the true architect behind Wicca...Doreen Valiente! I enjoyed your video very much After The Witches and Ever After, I couldn't imagine Anjelica Houston depicting a protagonist. But I loved her as Morticia! I would've liked to see Emma Swan, The Charmed Ones

@ravennas.27365 жыл бұрын
I would like to have seen a review of both of those series. Charmed started out to be realistic with advice from a practicing witch. It was obvious that some of their early spells were real. Unfortunately it became nothing more than T and A so they lost me. Rose McGowan was the worst. American Horror Story Coven was interesting and disturbing. The portrayal of Marie Laveau was intense, a bit historical, a bit hip hop. She's always been one of my heroes and needs to be shown respect. Maybe there will be another video with more witches.

The first colour film (natural colour) is "With our King and Queen Through India", which predates the 'Wizard of Oz' by about 27 years. But 'Wizard' isn't even the first film using the technicolour process. That honour goes to 'Becky Sharp' in 1935. PS: The 'found footage' film was introduced in 1980 with 'Cannibal Holocaust'. Fun fact: That film (in this novel found-footage format) seemed so realistic at that time that the director was charged with multiple counts of murder!

The Wizard of Oz, a first and mile stone in Technicolor technology of its time, wasn't actually the first film in color. Two strip Technicolor had been very popular, especially in horror movies, before the Wizard of Oz and Gone With the Wind. Several full color movies and parts of movies had came out before that year(1939/ annversey milsetone full of classic movies), but were only mildy sucuseessful and didn't define the decade.

Not sure if it was in reaction to having read about the injustices of the witch trials, or if I'd picked up on some of the innate biases, but although I can enjoy a good "evil witch" story, even as a kid, I've always been more predisposed towards tales with positive depictions of witches. Samantha, Sabrina, Wendy, Wanda, Willow, Cassandra, Eastwick, Hermoine, Elvira, W.I.T.C.H. (- am I the only one majorly annoyed that such a great cartoon had an appallingly short run😢, while the annoyingly cutesy W.I.N.K.S. kept popping up forever?🙄). Even though Dark Shadow's Angelique (and shame on you if you don't know who I'm talking about) was generally as a villainess I sometimes found her a sympathetic character (maybe because she was dumped for not being "well-bred" enough to marry into the Collins family?). Aaaanyway; thanx for a great vid, happy solstice, happy Samhain, Happy Hall🎃ween and Blessed Be to the (good) witchy folk.

Great overview! I'd also mention "The Mists of Avalon", both the book and mini-series adaptation. The novel was written by Marion Zimmer Bradley and is a retelling of the Arthurian legends from the perspectives of the women in the tales. Specifically, it casts Morgan Le Fay (or Morgaine, as she's called here) as a priestess of the old religion, those who worship the Mother Goddess on the isle of Avalon. Morgaine is simply fighting to save her native Celtic culture from intolerant Christians and, in childhood, she and her half-brother, Arthur, are very close and love each other well. It's only political turmoil and corruption, with both Morgaine and Arthur being manipulated by others, that creates the later complicated connection and rivalry between them those who are familiar with the Arthurian stories will recognize. It's a great take on the tales, one of my favorites, and I highly recommend it. Blessed be. )O(

That old testament quote, by the way, is a deliberate mistranslation. The original Was "Thou shalt not suffer a poisoner to live" - King James, obsessed with Witches, had the word "Witch" swapped in instead of "Poisoner" in his version of the Bible (Known as the King James Bible) and it carried over to later editions as well. Fun Fact.

Glinda is Witch of the North, does Wicked Witch of the West name Zelena? Or that's name chosen on TV show Once Upon A Time?
@taylorann90816 жыл бұрын
Well, if we're going by the original books as cannon, the only witch that had a name in the books was the witch of the south. Her name was Glinda. Which is confusing because in the movie the witch of the north was Glinda. L. Frank Baum gave names for two of the other witches for a silent film and stage adaptation of his books. Giving the witch of the north the name Locasta and the witch of the west Momba. The witch of the east remains nameless as far as L. Frank Baum is concerned.

Another great video! Thanks. Same comment though as what I said under your Werewolf video. It's a common mistake or you might say a persistent myth, but the witch trials were NOT in the middle ages, but in the Renaissance, the period after the middle ages. The witch trials are associated with the period 1450 to 1750. The witch trials are culturally linked to the reformation (rise of protestantism) and counter-reformation: where Catholicism in a reaction to the reformation, became a much more formalised and 'exclusive' religion, in contrast to the more 'inclusive' umbrella phenomenon it had been before because of it not yet having any major competition from other religions. Under this 'battle' you might say between protestantism and Catholicism, a figurative and literal witch-hunt arose focused on people showing odd behavior and not conforming to religious dogmas. There was also an element of localized bursts of mass hysteria, see the Salem Witch trials in America, but also the witch hunts in for instance Germany and England (see Matthew Hopkins, who ironically fell into his own sword so to speak, in the end).
@dmnemaine5 жыл бұрын
May have already been mentioned in the comments, but "The Wizard Of Oz" was nowhere even close to being the first color film. Filmmakers began experimenting with color on film during the silent era. Two-strip technicolor actually precedes the advent of sound films. There were also films made in the newer three-strip technicolor process throughout the 1930s that precede "Oz". "The Adventures Of Robin Hood" with Errol Flynn is an example. Because technicolor was an expensive process, most films during the 1930s and 1940s were made in black and white. As color technology on film began to be less expensive, more and more films were made in color. It wasn't until the mid to late 1960s that movies began to be nearly exclusively in color, with black and white only being used for artistic/aesthetic reasons.
