The RNLI is the charity that saves lives at sea. 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, lifeboat crews around the UK and Ireland are ready to launch to help those in need. Whether you're stuck on a sinking ship, cut off by a rapidly rising tide, or in the water and close to drowning, RNLI crew members will drop everything to come to your rescue. 95% of RNLI lifeboat crews and station staff are volunteers.
But it’s not just lifeboats. RNLI lifeguards patrol 248 beaches across the UK and Channel Islands, keeping people safe, providing safety advice and rescuing those in trouble. Education volunteers visit schools and swimming clubs to help teach the next generation how to enjoy the water safely. And volunteer fundraisers and shop workers give up their time to generate vital funds. The RNLI is also working to help communities around the world that are most at risk of drowning.
If you spot someone in trouble in the water, call 999 or 112 and ask for the coastguard.

Love the Severn and Trent Class designs , outstanding sea boats.The Severn Class vessels are to be refurbished, pity they couldn't do the same with the Trent Class boats , which have more then proven their worth as part of the RNLI fleet over the last 30 years. Great boats the Trent Class. I think if the RNLI were going to replace the Trent Class boats they should continue to build Tamar Classs boats to replace the remaining Trents.

There is only so many times a vessel can be refitted before it is too outdated and new better vessels with all the new high technology are the best and cheapest option as the Shannon class has proved.

Deciding when to retire a lifeboat from RNLI service is certainly a complicated matter, Tony. We take into consideration factors such as last refit dates, cost of logistics, current condition and of course reaching people in trouble quicker.

The covememt should help towards the RNLI instead of Donitions from the public as well. Do fantastic job always and love watching the documentary programme saving life's at sea. Brave crew indeed going out in very roughs seas and putting there life's before them.

Wondering whether foils will ever make their way into the designs...might make for a less bumpy ride?
@rnli
@rnli 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Nathan, there are various reasons starting with costs and maintenance. But also the fact that our lifeboats need to operate at a variety of depths and speeds, and foils can limit both of those things. Our latest all-weather lifeboat, the Shannon class, utilises waterjets for propulsion which has greatly increased manoeuvrability, stopping distances and also ability to be beached without risk of damage to any props. Are there any plans for a replacement for the Severn or will the Shannon take over everywhere?

Hi Dominic, we're actually in the prototype phase of the Severn Life Extension Project - stayed tuned to our channel for an update coming on that very soon!

Pity you couldnt do the same for stations with the Trent Class boats, outstanding sea boats the Trent Class the Shannon Class looks a bit smal, particularly for stations on the south coast of Ireland which operate in the Atlantic ocean, often in quite heavy weather having to tow large Trawlers back to port. The Shannon just looks a bit lightweight for such missions.

Hi David, we have a lot of love for the Trent! There's only 70cm in it between the Shannon and Trent at 13.6m and 14.3m respectively though, and the Shannon waterjet propulsion system can certainly 'pull its weight' too! 😉

Please slow down the videos! I love following the work of sea rescue organisations, but your videos bombard one with these short clips overlayed by text which you hardly have enough time to read (nevermind watch the video they describe) before the next one arrives. Please take this as constructive input.

Although she was owned by the RNLI, the tug Helen Peele was not a lifeboat. See this article: rnliarchive.blob.core.windows.net/media/1736/0299.pdf#page=6 She did save ten lives, but many vessels save lives: that does not mean that they are lifeboats. It's disappointing that the RNLI should be re-writing its own history.

Hi Ian, we consider ON 478 Helen Peele as part of the lifeboat fleet although technically not a lifeboat. She was given an ON number and without her the Padstow lifeboat could not have saved as many lives as it did. The tug also worked alone under special circumstances completing services on behalf of the lifeboats belonging to the institution. It was therefore given the official number and was manned by a permanent crew of seven.
