Anyone can do crazy, but Yuasa is among a very select few who can do crazy in an extremely meaningful way. He's easily my favorite anime director. There's true profundity in his entire body of work.

The Tatami Galaxy is probably my all-time favourite anime series. Its crazy imagery, its particular take on loneliness and self-apology, paired with one of the most satisfying endigs make it an undiscovered classic. I can't wait until you make a video about it.

The Tatami Galaxy is some of the best stuff I've ever seen in animation. I know I'll be rewatching it. It's what really sold me on Yuasa. I just adore the concept and execution. And it's also really funny, as well as genuinly touching. Mind Game is absolutely fascinating. I didn't care for all the over-sexualization and perviness (some bits really felt like fetish material), but other than that, incredible. I definitely had a blast with all the artistic creativity, the mixing of different animation style and different media altogether. Lu was the first movie by him I saw, and while it was nice, I think it's not as good as some of his other works. It has some really strong bits but I felt like it sort of fell apart in the second half, idk. Yuasa is such a unique and fascinating director. I feel like all his works (that I've seen so far) are incredibly life-affirming. I'm so excited to watch more (I seriously can't wait to get my hands on Inu-Oh).

Loved Mind Game.
@ZanraiKid5 жыл бұрын
To call Yuasa “just an artiste” is kind of doing a disservice to his whole schtick. Yes, he has absurdly massive set pieces and quieter introspective works that look absurdly high art (like, seven layers of irony art), but before he started doing original works, he cut his teeth and honed his trademark anti-anime style through Crayon Shin-Chan and Chibi Marako-Chan films, two ubiquitous mainstays of Japanese culture. If I had to pin down what his whole deal is, Yuasa is a pop artist through and through. He takes low art like getting shot in the ass, explosive sex, masochistic strongmen, and mondo wet dreams, and somehow make you care about them. He directed a weird passion project funded exclusively by Kickstarter, guest animated an episode of Adventure Time, and even dropped Devilman Crybaby, an anime that reinvented the image of Netflix. While he wasn’t the first Japanese Anime director to create for the international audience in mind, he was the first to jumpstart the trend. I can’t really do justice to his entire career, but his ultimate success is due to him making works for a generation of post-modern Otaku who think FLCL is the dumbest smartest thing ever and got to see nerd culture go mainstream. Unlike any other director, he has his finger on what people think is cool and ramps it to an il/logical conclusion.

I Love Masaaki Yuasa he's one of my top favorite anime directors within the industry due to his unique & highly creative abstract style of both animation and art. +Glass Reflection, Personaly after his recent work on Devilman Crybaby I'd love to see this mad man adapt one of the Go Nagai mecha series to be more specific the recent incredibly violent manga reinterpretations Mazinger Zero or Getter Robo Devoultion. Both are masive acid trips involving cosmic horror power level mecha and both make even his adaption of Devilman and even more so the source material tame and kid friendly by comparison. I read a recent intreview the man had and he did say he had intrest in doing some of Go Nagi's other work in the future after he finishes up his curent projects espacly Mazinger and Cutie Honey which disappoints me that he said he espacly intrested in doing something with Honey due to how lewd her material can get and I admit she needs a good adaptation after Cutie Honey Universe but damit I would kill to see him do Mazinger Zero or Getter Robo Devolution as I feel he's one of the few people in the modern anime industry who would know how to do the levels of brutal and bizarre violence those stories have in them right. Granted there are a few others but not many -_-
