So many of the fan rewrites just cut Jar Jar from the movie altogether; it's refreshing to see someone actually try to work with him. A fix I had in mind was having an extra Gungan follow along; Roos Tarpals, the commander that we see fighting with him in the battle. He would be the straight man to Jar Jar's humour, while also serving as an extra fighter. His reason for coming; he was sent to make sure that if Jar Jar were to be taken, then he should be killed, so that the location of their city would remain a mystery to the rest of the galaxy. Of course, this isn't what would happen. And then, when the Battle of Naboo comes along, we see Roos performing competently, and then the camera would pan to Jar Jar's klutziness, providing greater contrast.

The guy that is seen facepalming at Jar Jar’s foolish suggestion? I can see that happening, while having Roos be speaking intellectually would also serve as a good contrast too.

Giving the gungans their own language is a pretty good solution. Also making the moments where they do speak in Basic moments where theyre being condescending really adds to Boss Nass being all high and mighty

Plus it adds to the fact that when they speak Basic, it's not at a native level. Their language clearly has different grammar, and some of that shows, even when their leader is speaking. A bit how Yoda speaks. He clearly had a lot of time learning Basic, but still speaks with turned around sentences.

15:55 In support of thinking of luxury yachts more as passenger liners than military cruisers: Recreational sailor here! Long distance keel boat races (regattas) are usually divided into two overarching classes: "Racer" boats are sailboats designed for racing from masthead to keel. "Cruiser" boats are sailboats designed for pleasure cruising that have been entered in a race regardless. The race committee then takes these two general classes and divides them further into more specific classes of length, displacement and rigging. The Republic cruiser's non-belligerent assignments ferrying diplomats around the galaxy in comfort rather than at break-neck speeds would make it a neat fit for the "cruiser" class in our own wet oceans.

I feel like Jar Jar would have been so much better received by Star Wars fans if, at the end of the battle with the droid army, instead of showing him comically surrendering when the droids had him at gun point, the scene was treated with more gravity and he was depicted facing death with dignity, like a warrior. I also think he should have gotten a poignant moment at Qui-Gon's funeral acknowledging his being released from his life-debt. The Gungans see themselves as a proud warrior race placing a high value on honor and loyalty, it would have made sense for Jar Jar to have a character arc about him overcoming his cowardice and proving himself to his people in the end.

21:00 in the directors commentary featured in the 2011 Bluray, it is stated that the “Force Sprint” was actually a result of an editing choice due to the actors on set walking away rather non-chalantly. They decided to speed up the footage and add smearing to make the action flow better in contrast to the Droidika’s barrage.

While Jar Jar being a full-fledged Sith lord is a meme, to be sure (but a welcome one), the idea that he was secretly an agent of the Dark Side is fascinating. Like an inverse parallel of Yoda, a seemingly harmless and unassuming amphibious creature encountered in a swamp turns out to be a powerful and mystical being. The red skin, dark clothes and yellow eyes also scream Dark Side much in the same way Yoda's green skin and simple brown robes were indicative of the Jedi. Jar Jar "merely pretending" would have also fixed people's complaints about his character being too goofy and childish by making it all an act to lull the good guys (and the audience) into a false sense of security.

Making him not speak Basic is a minimal change. Personally for a larger re-write that would let him fulfill the roles he played and make a lot more sense with the positions he's put in, I would make him a member of a noble or upper-class family where his family prestige was used to cover up his bumbling. This makes him fit into the army and the political situations a lot better and sets up some character growth of him realizing how much he's been a fuck-up. His presence on the surface being a military posting to just get him out of the way. So he's not just a banished fool defying the city, he's a military officer and noble that's playing on his status to get the Jedi to speak with the leader. It cascades out from there pretty nicely. I think Jar-Jar would be considered a better character if he had appreciable character growth in the story.

While Naval terminology on Earth shouldn't always be applicable to Star Wars. Arbitrary naming of ship class is also a common feature of modern navies. Germany has frigates that under everyone else's definition would be a Guided Missile Destroyer. A modern Cruiser only differs from a Destroyer by its Radar package and its equipment loadout. The new Zumwalt Destroyers are larger and displace more tonnage than WWI era Battleships. And nobody can forget Japan's fleet of Fixed wing aircraft launching, carrier shaped Destroyers. Outer rim arms dealers aren't known for their truthfulness as we all know.

I always loved how Obi was portrayed in Episode 1, because we've only seen him be the stoic master from ep. 4 and his voice from 5 and 6. To see him at the youngest we've seen him, being so brash and impatient with a light air of superiority for being a Jedi. Having lost Qui-gon really forced him to mature, and then to be in charge of the boy he once considered a "pathetic life form". It really shows from the start that he was not the master Anakin would need. They were very similar, despite Obi trying to seem like he was in control of situations and in control of his emotions, he was still young himself, so much more he himself had to learn from Qui-gon!

Obi wan was forced (lol) to grow up quick after quigon goes down. He succeeds, and continues to grow over the course of the prequels Anakin was thrown into to Jedi training late, told he is the chosen one. we see him fail to grow up fully in episode 2, we think he is grown at the beginning of episode 3 but we see hints that he's not. Then it all falls apart. The trilogy is all about the separation of obiwan and Anakin culminating in their fight on the volcano planet. ITS FUCKING GENIUS!!!

one thing people who werent around then probably dont realize is that in the theatre and definitely on a normal tv people had back then the cgi looked pretty photorealistic, unlike on a perfectly clear lcd these days where its awful. it's a bit of a shame because the compositing, like making the different elements into a scene, is what suffers, due to not very good lighting and lens simulations, things like that, and it sort of hides that some things, like jar jar himself, are actually equal and in some cases a bit better than what you'd see now in some ways. imo of course.

I have a counter Bread Circus, "larger engines means it is faster" does not account for engine efficiency, a very large engine can produce much less thrust than a smaller engine and often does in older engines compared to new engines.
@kapitankapital6580
@kapitankapital6580 Жыл бұрын
In real life different engine size and shape on spacecraft can dictate what sort of environment the engine works well in; for example engines designed to fire in atmosphere tend to be larger with wider nozzles to maximize push, while narrower engines with smaller outputs tend to maximise efficiency for long distance, low gravity propulsion. While obviously physics doesn't work the same way irl as in Star Wars, it's not beyond the realm of possibility to suspect that the different engine layouts are designed to prioritise different things.
@Dies1r4e
@Dies1r4e Жыл бұрын
@@kapitankapital6580 I agree?
@thebreadcircus
@thebreadcircus Жыл бұрын
True enough, it could definitely give better efficiency. After a certain point, though, it starts going the other way. When the engine gets too large and low-thrust, adding more only slows the ship down. Another factor to consider is that maybe we shouldn't be thinking from the perspective of the ship at all. What kinds of engines are being manufactured on Corellia at the time? Perhaps in the time of the Radiant VII, the shipyards were making some enormous ships. The corvettes made at that time have huge engines, because they're good enough and available to CEC factories in high numbers. By the time the Tantive IV comes around, there are a lot of smaller, lighter engines on the market instead. -DZ

The really old earth definition of a cruiser is a ship which does cruising, as in patrols and colonial policing. This would be stuff like frigates, brigs and sloops so in that sense the prequel definition makes sense for the Old Republic. They'd have to send out random ships to all sorts of places all the time to check up on them which is what "cruisers" were used for. As time went on, on earth, big frigates morphed into a new class - the cruiser, then they basically just kept growing from there. Any Star Wars lore definition can follow the same line of reasoning. Our current (earth) ship classifications are basically all out of whack anyway.

I don't think you should get too worked up about them calling it a cruiser, I think that's just a colloquial term for a large vessel in Star Wars. It's also worth remembering that average ship size explodes during the Clone Wars and Galactic Civil War, so trying to retroactively apply Imperial classifications built around Star Destroyers to a peacetime Republic navy is probably not a great idea.

Part 1: I don't think the criticism is that taxation was a bat motive or that it was bad to show the senate. But it was the execution that was the problem. Taxation is fine, but there was a video (I believe it was RLM) which went into: why was THIS the problem? Why was the trade federation secretly blockading Naboo? Who set the taxes? Why? Why did the federation think that Naboo was the right target? Why a blockade instead of an embargo or boycott? Why NOT involve the Republic? There are 30 seconds in Episode IV devoted to politics. This is sandwiched between arguments on how powerful the Death Star is. It is a very tight piece of exposition that ends with "Fear will keep the local systems in line." There are at least 4 minutes in TPM specifically devoted to the senate hearing (including preparations for the hearing and the hearing itself). The conference room in Episode IV shows the motive and means the Empire has to destroy a planet. It creates the tension and suspense that drives the plot forward. The Senate Hearing bogs the plot down, especially because it doesn't really go anywhere. I've long been of the opinion that TPM shouldn't even have been a movie. We should have started with something much closer to Attack of the Clones. Episode IV starts with the Death Star being revealed and ends with it being destroyed. ESB starts with Vader's hunt for Luke and ends with their battle. RotJ is a bit messy, but it wraps up the arcs of Han and Jabba, Luke and Vader, and the Rebellion and the Empire. TPM has the major plot points in the middle - Anikan being discovered and Palpatine gaining power. The action in the movie has very little do with either of them.

13:17 The section about Gunray calling the ship a "Naboo cruiser" when it is clearly too small to be a cruiser by any standard or definition. This very likely was a simple mistake or oversight by the script writers, but at the same time, I think it fits in perfectly. Nute Gunray is not a general, he's a businessman and a politician. People like that in the real world get the technical names of objects wrong all the time. Alexandria Cortez was talking about a type of armored truck used by SWAT teams all over the US, called an MRAP (Mine Resistant Ambush Protected), and she called it a "tank". It's a large, bulky truck with four wheels like any other car, and is absolutely not a tank. She was not talking figuratively as in "it's a tank of a vehicle" or anything similar, she said the word tank as in the huge and heavily armored tracked vehicle with a large turret and main cannon on top. Gunray calling that ship a cruiser is exactly the same as Cortez calling that truck a tank.

I didnt find so much hatred for Jar Jar himself but rather that his pratfalls and slapstick was not congruant with the style of the Star Wars universe. For example, much like the "telephone" gag at the beginning of Last Jedi, inserting a Wayne's World-esque "exqueeze me" was cringworthy. As a result, all of Jar Jars lines came across as cringe, like Lucas was an out of touch parent of teens trying to relate to them by appropriating their lingo improperly .

I can help you with the naming issue. Cruiser does not mean it is a ship focused on speed. It's an explanation of their role, cruising. Ships which can be long at sea unsupported. That description is also used in many non-military ship descriptions. Also, because many nations have different ideas about naval warfare ship classifications are descriptive, not prescriptive. For example in the cold war new ships designed to maximize missiles carried were refered to as both missile cruisers and missile carriers, and these are both acceptable and would be considered correct. What is important is that you use the words to describe the function of the ship. Cruisers cruise. Destroyers destroy small targets that threaten the fleet. Carriers carry other platforms (submarine carriers used to exist also) Battleships make up the line of battle. The shapes and sizes are incidental to these functions.

I’m pretty sure the captain of the Radiant 7 is a woman with short hair and not a young boy. She’s also played by an actress named Bronagh Gallagher so I’d say that backs up my theory. Edit: Whoops you addressed this a few minutes after saying it. I guess I just always understood the captain to be a woman but I suppose I could see how you could make the mistake.

Uh, the escape pod on the Falcon/1300 is definitely not the cockpit. The Falcon doesnt have its escape pod anymore. It was in the center of the prongs and was jettisoned during the Solo movie.

If I had to cover in the lore for the discrepancies of cruiser classification, I'd probably redefine the standard to be different for unarmed civilian craft. Ay ship designed to carry a group of people would be classed as a 'shuttle', and a larger ship like the Radiant 7 would be a 'cruiser shuttle', which would then be colloquially shortened to 'cruiser' by most people. The cruiser shuttle would then be anything from a diplomatic barge to a luxurious space yacht.

After having rewatched the movie recently, I came to the conclusion that the movie is fine. Not as good as the OT or the other two prequel movies, but I consider it in a similar place as Temple of Doom in the Indiana Jones trilogy. Not as good as the others, but fine.

Thanks for saying so! The next episode in this TPM series is almost ready, should be out in a few days. We're aiming to increase the regularity of the uploads, with a focus on having a complete series to cover this movie. Though, knowing us, you'll probably get another one-off video on some other topic. -DZ

Cruiser may in part be drawing from the original definition where cruiser was a roll not a classification. Any ship capital or not sent on a cruising mission was a cruiser. It wouldn’t be hard to see how this could evolve into a diplomatic term as cruising missions often had diplomatic missions.

Concerning the Cruiser debacle, as you mentioned in the video, Cruisers are defined by the Imperial system. The Phantom Menace takes place a decade before the formation of the Empire. Additionally, there is no galactic warfare. In peace times, maybe a cruiser means something entirely different.

As much as I enjoy the concept of Jar-Jar secretly being the greatest evil in the galaxy, I much prefer any attempt to make him work better as he is; he's not bad, just misused. The idea of Jar-Jar speaking Gungan and only switching to Basic for people that he knows wouldn't bother to understand him otherwise is good, and made great with the rework that Padme uses a Gungan phrase she learned in passing from Jar-Jar to win over Boss Nass. One of the greatest missed opportunities for me was a lack of New Republic in the Sequels, and part of what I would have wanted to see was Jar-Jar back in the Senate specifically fighting against remilitarization against Leia trying to make sure that the Imperial Remnant has no foothold in the galaxy. Imagine a scene where Jar-Jar is explaining the guilt that he feels, knowing that his good intentions to protect the Republic by giving Palpatine emergency powers led to the Empire, and that he refuses to see the New Republic follow a similar path. But because Disney looked at the Prequels and decided that there was nothing of quality and nothing that could be salvaged and that they shouldn't take anything from it, we will never get a proper look at a New Republic that takes cues from both the OT and Prequels.
@thebreadcircus
@thebreadcircus Жыл бұрын
This is a great point. About all you get are the occasional Clone Wars items showing up. Some eccentric New Republic hero might use a DC-15 clone blaster. A band of mercenaries has a droideka or MTT. Maybe a post-Empire warlord has Acclamators and Venators in his fleet of obsolete star destroyers, as well as the usual Victory class. Even I rarely think about bringing prequel-era things back after the fall of the Empire. -DZ
