The b/c of this song is the day of Karwa Chauth. In which wives keep one day fast (without eating food & drink) wishing for the long lives of their husbands. They break their fast only after seeing the moon on that day. In modern form, both husband & wife keep this fast wishing happiness, protection & long lives for eachother. In the song you can see the woman waiting for the moon sighting (neighbours or women from the family often do this together) and then, they use a sieve called 'chalini' with a diya (small lamp) kept in it and first see the moon nd then their husbands face who offers them some sweets nd water to break the fast with their hands.

So this is the festival of karva chaud. Women fast for long life of husband untill the moon comes up. Then they watch the moon through the sieve, then view their husband through the seive. So Aishwarya fast I think and then she holds up the mesh fabric like the Seive and looks at salman. But when she is with Ajay she won't even look at him.

This is a gorgeous song, but most of the track is actually cut from the film, including the main chorus line. Only a bit of the verses are there...Very very strangely edited.. The lyrical version w/ the full track is much better. Songs very often get shortened in films, but they usually keep the main chorus and then at least one verse, so the structure of the song remains... Feels like they just haphazardly sampled a random middle section of the song and thought "well thats enough"...

I think the songs of this movie are better than the actual film. If you want to see an early Bhansali picture that is actually good, I think "Khamoshi: The Musical" would be a superior one.
