This palace is called "The Mirrors Palace". It was built by the Peshwas who were the wheels of the Maratha Empire. And Deepika Padukone plays the role of the daughter of the Hindu Rajput King Chhatrasal of Rajasthan and an Arabian Princess. She wasn't a Mughal. And yes ancient Indians were phenomenal at math and science. You must take a look at the ancient Indian temples all around India and also the palaces... The intricate work and the geometry is to die for. Thankyou for reacting 😊🙏

As a British Indian and fellow Londoner, I’m so pleased to see you enjoying your introduction to Bollywood. Bollywood is so rich in culture and seeped in individuality. You really cannot find cinema like it anywhere else. If you ever need help with understanding cultural nuances or the general evolution of Bollywood over the decades I’d be happy to help! :)

Since you have watched this song than I would strongly recommend you to watch and react to the iconic and legendary song" Pyar Kiya to Darna kya" from movie Mughal E Azam. That song is the actual inspiration behind this song from Bajirao Mastani. You would surely be mesmerized after watching that song from Mughal E Azam. That's a masterpiece and landmark song in indian cinema history. So highly recommended. Please react to that song 🙏

I just recently found your channel and I am so glad I did, I've watched so many of your reactions. I found your reaction so different to the other reaction channels which scarcely make any interesting commentaries, just some person going "wow, omg" to get views, likes and subscribers. I find them shameless creatures. But you genuinely seem to be interested in Indian filmmaking and it's history, all your insight are spot on, and I can tell you have some background in filmmaking yourself, as you notice camera movements, lighting, framing and nuances in expressions etc. Glad you found Bhansali, and you appreciated him for the same reasons I do. He is an auteur of Indian cinema, a living legend, a master filmmaker and crafts man. He truly feel every beat of a scene or of a song and realizes it with an immaculate vision through light, sound, costume, sets and, acting done to perfection. He should be studied around the world in film schools and take his place among the greats in the history of cinema. There is nobody quite else like Bhansali in Indian cinema, but I want to recommend some other class filmmakers to you who have mastery over other areas, that I believe have not been recommend to you yet. Anurag kashyap: a master in modern filmmaking, strongly influenced by European styles, particular Russian. Check out his modern masterpiece: No smoking and the song from the movie "cigarette" Sriram raaghvan: a master helmer in neo noir cinema. He is known for his tight, gripping and inventive thrillers. Check out Johnny gadar and Andhadhun. Sujoy gosh: A refined Bengali filmmaker, he has a sharp polished visual style. He is known famously for his original suspense kahaan and recent Badlai. However, he is less well known for his original take on the classic Aladdin. It was ahead if it's time, but it's a actually a small gem in fantasy filmmaking, with the most refined VFX work I've seen in an Indian movie. Amitabh bachan plays one of the coolest genies (genie's) ever and Sanjay Dutt relishes the role of the evil jaffar. Check out the movie and the songs. Shoojit sicar. He is a very sensitive and subtle filmmaker. His movies are slow burners, but he takes time to explore the complexities of human drama. His stand out film is Piku, a road movie about an eccentric family with Deepika Padukone, Irfan khan and Amitabh bachan. He is now more known for his Netflix period drama on the Amritsar massacre, sardar uddam, which is widely considered the most accomplished period drama set around the British Raj. Vishal bharadwaj: known for his Shakespearean adaptations set in the word of Indian crime and politics, respectively Maqbool (Macbeth) Omkara (Othello) and Haidar (Hamlet) his movies are powerful dark tragic dramas. But the stand out for me is his adaptation of another story "7 khoon maaf" about a woman who marries 7 different husband in her life from different religions and backgrounds and they keep dying! One of Priyanka chopra best performance. Kamal Hassan: He is maverick filmmaker, known for his deeply psychological movies, that explore the character deep inner thoughts and neurosis. Known for Hey!ram where he plays Gandhi's killer. But the true stand out is Alavaandhan/Abhay, where he plays a psychopath and movie is told from his point of view. Also check out the trailer of his upcoming movie Vikram. Some notable mentions of India's most talented and award winning filmmakers: Aparna Sen: Mr and Mrs Iyer and 15 park avenue Manratnam: Dil se, Roja Bombay, kannithal muthmittal Ashutosh gowarikar: Lagaan, Swades, jodha Akbar Rajkumar hirani: 3 idiots, PK and Munnabhai BBS 1and 2 Rajkumar Santoshi: legend of bhagat Singh, khakkee, Pukar, China gate Check them out and look forward to seeing your reactions on their material.

I liked the Bajirao Mastani love triangle a lot. In fact I generally think Bollywood love triangles are more interesting than Western ones. Usually in Western ones you have Mr Right and Mr Wrong and they compete over the girl. In Bollywood ones you can get much more varied emotional dynamics. In the case of Bajirao Mastani, he ends up with two wives and loves both of them, but in different ways and whilst there is some conflict between the wives it follows a different pattern to what you'd see in most Western films. And the big conflict really is over the wider family/court accepting Mastani despite her being a Hindu (Bajirao is Muslim). This is maybe why that Sufi element made it into the song - it might have been there to imply Mastani is accepting/acknowledging Bajirao's different religion, but I think other people will have much more knowledgeable takes on this. Re: historical accuracy, I would be careful about assuming historical accuracy in Bollywood movies. I rather get the impression that in Indian films they are less stringent about this. For example if I recall correctly, Border (1997), significantly changes what happened in a military encounter between India and Pakistan to the point where it killed off characters based on real people, who are still alive today! If you want to know if something is accurate, it's best to research it. I'm sure aesthetics of that time in history would have inspired Bajirao Mastani to some degree, but I think it's hard to tell how accurate it actually is without researching it. Although maybe other more knowledgeable people will be able to tell you more. AFAIK both Bajirao Mastani and Padmaavat are based more on legends/stories than actual historic facts and so Sanjay Leela Bhansali would have been in a position to take liberties. Since you specifically mention Othello/Shakespeare in this video - there *is* actually a critically acclaimed Bollywood Othello adaptation with an all-star cast - Omkara (2006). In fact, a song from Omkara is on the 100 greatest songs list you're going through at no. 67 ("Beedi"). Shakespeare tragedies and Bollywood go really well together I think. Vishal Bhardwaj directed a whole trilogy of Shakespeare tragedies to wide acclaim - Maqbool (2003) [Macbeth], Omkara (2006) [Othello] and Haider (2014) [Hamlet]. These are all set in more contemporary times. Omkara is great and many people's favourites of those three, so definitely worth a look if you're interested. I personally find Haider the most fascinating and incredibly cinematic. It was the most risky film of the three - it's set in the 1990s in Kashmir, amidst military curfews and such and is therefore very politically loaded. It's also one of very few films made in recent history which was actually shot *in* Kashmir, mostly Kashmir is considered too dangerous/risky to shoot movies in and therefore other locations stand in. I doubt it would pass the Indian censorship board today (in 2014 a different government was in power). The big set piece song from Haider is Bismil, which is the mouse trap scene from Hamlet (so if at any point you're interested in watching it, make sure you have English subs as those are important to really follow the song). The song is full of Kashmiri folklore aesthetics, which is quite different to the usual aesthetics one sees in Bollywood, so you might enjoy that. Going back to Bajirao Mastani - IMO the trailer is very beautiful and spectacular, so I'd recommend it if you feel like reacting to it.

Good song sequence and great filmmaking by all those involved, yet I find the sets and style to the art direction/cinematography rather ‘clinical’ and without the sense of authenticity achieved by real sets for example as those used in Devdas. I’m nitpicking but I also find Deepika’s lip syncing to be off somehow? Great dancing from her otherwise. It’s all about looks and style in this film.
