A budget alternative to the Ford Everest? SsangYong Rexton 2023 review: ELX diesel seven-seater 4x4

This diesel-powered seven-seater 4WD could be a more affordable alternative to the likes of the Ford Everest - but is the SsangYong Rexton worth considering?
You're going to have to be okay with a few, er, idiosyncrasies, according to Emily Agar, CarsGuide family reviewer. She spent a week with the Rexton ELX base model, and came away impressed by the value for money offered by this SUV - it's just $47,990 drive-away, after all.
And it has plenty of good features and inclusions that you don't get in base model rivals like the Mitsubishi Pajero Sport, Isuzu MU-X and Toyota Fortuner.
Plus it has a four-wheel-drive powertrain with a punchy diesel engine, and a spacious cabin with seven seats. And one of the biggest steering wheels of any new car on the market.

We have just bought one, there are 3 grades including the black edition. Not sure what rough ride means I have tested both normal suspension setup and ironman setup and they are both smooth. also no rattles from any parts of the car unlike the new ranger/everest which is 30k more. The rexton was not our first choice, but after sitting and driving it was clearly the winner and the price point sealed the deal. I had ordered a MUX but the wait for that car is rediculous, the interior in the isuzu is far less inferior. Really happy with the rexton. Not sure what she also means about the steering wheel being to close, maybe use the tilt and reach adjustment :) the Curtain airbags extend to the 3rd row for mine so not sure what shes going on about there.

I really feel that many car reviewer who put Ssangyong Rexton are very bias to whatever else, when in reality, this car is really great. Even the comfortability is far more better than a Toyota Fortuner. They themselves, Carsguide, were the ones comparing SUV's against each other.

I have a Triton ute. Now that has a rough ride. I also have a Rexton and the ride is beautiful compared to the ute. Both have body on rail chassis so are comparable. Truck like? In comparison to what, other 4wds or 2 door hatches?

Now that Ssangyong is out of financial difficulties, this is a no brainer purchase. It is incredible value. The upcoming Torres is also brilliant vehicle, complete with an Asian 6 speed torque converter auto. Why buy Chinese when you can buy a budget priced Korean that offers better more reliable drivetrains.

The reviewers comment about the park brake - put the seat belt on first before taking it out of park, stops it from going back into park.

This review is a bit misleading. The ride is absolutely great on the 18" rims with the recommended tyre pressure for a car this size and price. If you're comparing it with a BMW 5-7 series or a $100000 Land Cruiser, sure, it could be better. Regarding the airbags, they go all over the 3rd row too. And the most important things about this car are that it is extremely safe due to its construction, it has a proper 4x4 with 4H and 4L, which means that you could actually do serious off-road with it. The only drawback is the rather small front/back angles, which are 20,5°. Also, it is a spectacular vehicle for towing. All in all, if you want a big vehicle that can carry everything and get you everywhere in a pretty comfy environment, this car is an absolute steal at this price. Nothing even comes close to it.

Seems to be an agenda with this review! The steering wheel is not huge, the Rexton is ridiculously quiet, so I don’t know how it sounds mean and handles like a truck or a truck like experience…Seriously? This is more car like than any other in its category. 4/10 for the review!

Ive got an older Ssaanyong ute I inherited from a family member that used it hard. Its solidly built (215Kms). The availability of parts and specialist knowledge is the only gripe I have - Im handy and I knew what i was getting myself into, and I have been pleasantly suprised.

I couldn't watch this lady waffle on in her so called 'review' any longer than 2.23 minutes. My intuition tells me that this car is a pretty good option for me. I live out of town, in the bush, down a dirt track and with a creek crossing to get home. So the availability of a snorkel would be something I'd need to investigate. The comments on here very much support the Reston, which is always a good thing. I like the 3.5 ton towing and the torquey motor. But would it be a suitable replacement for my Pajero? More investigation required, me thinks.

This is all incorrect information she is pouring out in this review. I can’t quite understand why some of these people hold such a strong bias against these fantastic vehicles . I stopped listening to chasing cars for the same reason . Seems like Paul Meric from auto expert is the only real deal there. Rexten is way better than Everest and fortuner. No issues with ride quality or suspension or rattles none of it

About time review of this truck is Ok to good Ford, Mazda, Toyota, Isuzu.Have to look at your completely over the top price gouging. I would buy one of these so you start to listen to the consumer's How you justify your prices is beyond me . How do you justify the cost between base model and so called top spec Another one charging hundreds of dollars for so called Prestiage paint. Son spray painter has said can not understand why.
