A month or so ago I commented that I had put in an offer on a property and was watching your new video while I waited for the response. I was outbid (by an out of state investor, of course), but I'm very pleased to say Monday evening my offer on another property was accepted! The house is in better shape, has triple the land (3.6 acres), is fully fenced, and even has a little pond! Earlier this year I found a sign that says "Give it to God and go to sleep," and I've had it on my bedaide table since. It's been such a good reminder when I'm stressed and tired of waiting. Things will happen when its time for them to and until then we can be happy knowing they will come ❤

@Roots and Refuge RE: Podcast: Jess, Thank you so much for creating your podcast and committing to this KZbin channel. For the past several years, my body has been gradually degenerating due to a musculoskeletal disorder, and I've turned to gardening, canning, and home cooking for a lot of my solutions to the problems that come with it, but I've really struggled conveying to my loved ones why and how this is important to me and to our lives. Your cogent understanding of health, and God, and our relation to this world have helped so much starting conversations and giving me words I can use to help relate with my family again. Thank you so much for all that you do. It has been a great help and a weight off my shoulders, and I've really appreciated having someone out there I could relate to. Thank you, Sarah

I’m old. Just turned 62. My classroom was many years ago. We all do what we can do, when we can do it. I don’t have a milk cow but I’ve got a lot chickens. Just do what you can do, when you can. It’s all good. My freezer is full of tomatoes- in a month or so. I’ll make sauce. Then I’ll rest through the winter months. Hit it hard in the spring. Lather, rinse, repeat. Until I can’t. We can only do what we can do.

Every life has to have those things that keep us going. I was a missionary for a time and there were what we called “747” days. What that meant was if there was a Boing 747 sitting at our front door we would have been tempted to fly home. In our case what kept us there was God’s calling…that clear belief that He wanted us there. Whatever one does you have to have that something that keeps you at it when things are hard. I think that was what you were describing when you talked about the dream days…those days when all you could do was dream about what that garden or that farm would be like. Thanks for sharing the hard days. Some people never consider that things will get hard and they quit when the going gets hard.

I truly believe that people that had difficult life specially being hungry for lack of money for a period of time actually makes us appreciate the lifestyle even it's so hard at times. I so appreciate the food we grow and I too remember not that long ago I wanted chickens so bad it was hurting 😂. I get up in my nasty Canadian winter to care for them and don't complaint

Hey Jess, we just escaped the German frost and went to the Canary islands for vacation. And yesterday we had a nice tour on permaculture here done by a small local educational farm. Amazing what you can do in five years i.e. turning basically desert into a jungle. The guy called it The edible forest garden. He specialized in growing vanilla (which is obviously a whole lot of effort without the natural pollinators) but also had a bunch of lemon grass. Just saw your video on this. And just entered on the to-do list for next year. :) Thanks a lot to you for putting all those ideas in my head. It is almost bursting... ;)

I needed that reminder today, to look back on some of that longing I bottled when I was casting ahead for where I wanted to be. I'm there now! and today was one of Those Days. Totally different context to you (academia), but this wisdom crosses into many walks of life, doesn't it. Just like your practice of allowing yourself to feel the feelings, but then picking up and getting on with it. I use that practice too and advise my students to do the same, whenever we get a proposal rejection (very normal for academics, alas) or other bad news. It's so much healthier this way. Bottle the longing, not the disappointment.

My Hubby and I started yesterday, picked all fruit, put mulch over my asparagus bed, insulated the Bee hives, wrapped the Fig tree and watered the Chickens, stacked firewood and put up electric fences around the Winter garden. Jess, I hesitate to mention this but I'm thinking that as a southerner, you may not know. On cold, windy days, we can stay much warmer by wearing sweaters made of a medium-thin yarn rather than a thick yarn, such as that used in the lovely green sweater you were wearing in this video. It's easy to think a thicker sweater would be warmer, but with thick yarns there are more spaces between the stitches, allowing more air (cold wind) to get through. And the more wool fiber in the yarn, the warmer you'll stay. Here in the north, I always wear 100% wool when gardening. On the coldest, windiest days, I make sure to wear 100% alpaca wool, which is the warmest (outside of cashmere). Please excuse my advice-giving if you already know this. I did hear you say you hadn't unpacked your winter clothes yet. Stay warm! And feel better soon. God bless.

I promise I did not complain this summer when Texas was like hell when we reached 120f! I love the heat and hate the cold. It was 32f this morning in 8b and I didn’t get grumpy like I used too…could be I’m 65 😂 but I threw on my down coat in 8b on Nov 1 😡 and saved water for the birds tomorrow when it warms up a tad and I don’t have to freeze my fingers off. I do hate cold 🥶! This summer I processed my first Muscovy duck and just flipped him inside out…that’s what I call skinning. I saved the breast and legs and it went fairly well. I did buy a plucker for my quail since I usually process 15-20 at a time and I do like to keep their skins…it’s a good fat. Feel better. ❤

AND then get those single stand Xmas lights & cloths pins from dollar tree, dollar general, maybe even thrift store. Run the lights thru your beds then lay a sheet or blanket over that tucking your plants in. This world for us here in TX when these flash freezes come in. This was our last week the farm here was open, finished off the season with sooooo many heirloom and carving pumpkins and it's been a massive marathon closing things down, prepping to compost our surplus pumpkins and forever weeding the strawberry patch. I’m here for embracing a minute to be fussy about the weather. Texas has weather swings worse than a teenage girl has mood swings. Our first cold day of the year was proceeded by a high of a 84 and that night it dropped to 44. Then the next day was a high of 50. Our minds may have been ready for it but no body is prepared for that big a shift.

I feel the same Jess! I had to pick my peppers yesterday in the cold drizzley rain and wind! This morning we woke up to the promised frost and as I was running errands we also got the “wintry mix” slush storm that has come in waves since late morning! I just wanted to be home with a roaring fire and a nice hot cup of tea! So now as I watch this video I am sipping some very hot Earl Grey and thankful that the sun is shining brightly before the next wave of “wintry mix” hits! I have a a variety of peppers in a medium basket, from tiny cayenne to large banana peppers! Not sure what I will do with them yet, I think I will look into using them medicinally as we have been fighting some yuk, stay warm and get yourself a down vest if you don’t own one! Great for layering! Blessings ♥️

Have you considered hang drying the peppers to preserve them? If you smoke the red jalapeños then hang dry you’ll have chipotles. They last for years that way. Making adobo and putting them in adobo would make the saucy chipotles en adobo that people think of that come in a can. They’re delicious both ways!

The other day I picked all my tomatoes and lemon grass and brought in my peppers because they’re all in pots and I was sad and then we had leftovers for dinner and the last bite had the last green bean in it and Uhg I got teary because it was just so crisp and still fresh tasting even though it was cooked twice, man you can’t get that from a grocery store! I can’t wait to have more room to be able to save things, I also have quite a few teenagers so we eat a ton!!

I have been DYING for a big pepper harvest vlog! My peppers did so poorly this year and your high tunnel has been a dream to watch flourish. I am living through your abundance! I would love to see what you end up with and would love to see you process some of these big harvests. I know you’ve done freeze dried jars of peppers in the past and I find them enchanting 😍

Finally caught up! Here on the North West Coast of the UK we have a bit of a micro climate and we aren't predicted to have a frost for atleast the next fortnight but the daytime temperatures aren't getting much above 10 C / 50 F with nighttime temperatures around 7 C/ 48 F so it's pretty chilly, grey and damp. However the garden is still growing. Sunday is supposed to be dry for a few hours so I'm planning to go out and harvest the masses of sage & rosemary and anything else that is clinging on. It's been a tough year personally and I am longing for some down time after the Christmas period where I can curl up with the seed catalogues and all my cookbooks and dream for a while by the fire. Each season might have you longing for the next one but it has it's joyous elements as well.

We got our first snow fall yesterday. Lows have been in the 20s all week so it seems to be sticking as well, which is unusual. For us up nort, 39° is great hoodie weather for playing outside and having bonfires with homemade hot cocoa. Yummm 😊

Just want to let you know that I watch your videos partly to see what you are doing on the farm but mostly for the words of wisdom you say. There has been many times you say just what I need to hear. Thank you for that. And we are in canada, the pacific northwest and its cold here too. I don't remember the last time we had snow and a frost in October!

I just started my pepper ferment last night for the son-in-laws. I am making them sriracha this year. The rest are going into my shelved spicy pickled eggs and pickled wieners for 2024 eating! Luke coincided his 2024 seed launch with the first frost... gave me kind of a manic depressive flush last evening as I cried over the okra flowers as I purchased paul robeson's and Dr. Wyche's seeds for next year (it's my first time being quick enough to order them before the sell out... I'm BEYOND excited).

Awe.. When you say Lemon Drop. Makes me think of Barry's Crazy Cherry tomates.. One of my favorites.. That look so much like a huge cluster of Lemon Drops candy to me.. As I'm adding frozen ones to my breakfast right now... God's timing in the smallest little things.. Enjoying your words spoken from your precious thoughts is always appreciated. Blessings to you and yours, Jess ❤🌶️🫑🍅 Deb

Hey, Jess! I agree with you wholeheartedly! I'm a true Northwestern girl - webs between my toes, moss on my back, pale as a ghost, etc. The only time I like hot weather is when I want my tomatoes to start producing huge fruit and ripen. YES! YES! YES! You mentioned writing poetry and I've been waiting for an opportunity to tell you that you are my favorite type poet. I don't like poetry that much- as in rhyming words. I read some of your thoughts on your website and was immediately smitten. You write prose that oozes poetry - as my favorite authors do. Isn't there a novel waiting to pour from your fingertips? I will be standing in line to pick up my copy. I genuinely hope you will consider it. I bought your other books on gardening but haven't had time to read them yet. That will be part of my winter reading material. I know most people want you to write a cookbook, but I don't care about that......I want a novel. Thank you for reading this message, Jess. You are awesome and appreciated!
