2016 Subaru WRX. In this video you’ll see how to utilize the ATS Leak Detector to find leaks in an AC system. You’ll also see how it can be used for evap leaks as well. This tool has really helped us to keep vehicles from leaving with dye in the system and telling them to come back later. It’s perfect to help you track down the small leaks! Hope you enjoy!

I am an hvac tech and I just want to let everyone know that its not a good idea to use shop air or any other type of contaminating propellant because you could introduce excessive moisture into the refrigerant loop and moisture with refrigerant and refrigerant oil entrapped in the system could cause clogs or rapid corrosion which will eventually require a full system replacement. When in doubt pick up a tank of dry nitrogen gas. Its clean and moisture free. The only issue would be that you would have to first add a small amount of refrigerant to use as a trace gas for a refrigerant leak detector. This would only be needed mainly to test the evaporator side that is difficult to reach, otherwise just nitrogen pressure and soap bubbles. NEVER use oxygen to leak test or come in contact with a petroleum based product as it could react violently and combust.

Great video, Sherwood. really important to use the equipment properly when chasing these leaks. I used to work with a guy who would use the electronic leak detector with a huge fan blowing on him, then complain that the tool doesn't work. I never got to use the bullseye kit, but it looks to work great! I'd love to se more videos using it.

@alexlongpre4527

@@greg7886 It sure is. It is certainly not made for a small shop, even less for the DIYer, but if you do this kind of work day in, day out, with the time you save it'll pay for itself in no time. And I'm not even factoring in the fact that with R1234yf, every time you unhook the machine, you loose about 35$ worth of gas... You can also make do with the less expensive kit that does not include the device that automatically shuts the EVAP valves.

More often than that, there is more than one leak. That’s where most people get into trouble as they stop looking when they find one leak they go to the trouble evacuation recharge, and then the customers back with the same complaint. Pressure test with nitrogen or CO2 for at least 2 to 3 hours and see if you’re continue to lose pressure.

Cool video and I like the detailed explanations you give. When it comes to AC leaks we use Nitrogen with Hydrogen trace gas and a Hydrogen detector. It's good for evaps as you can usually pick up at the vents due to the Hydrogen rising.

I have no problem with using ac dye. It can take longer to find if you have to put it in then wait for it to leak and show a leak. This method allows us to find the leak right away.

CO2 is nice it has its advantages and disadvantages as you mentioned in the video. What is your breathing if you have a very good sensitive CO2 leak detector like my Inforcon Stratuts. Just breathing in the vicinity will set it off every time. As cars drive in and out of the shop, what is a big portion of exhaust gas from an engine CO2?. When you go into an passenger compartment just yourself breathing inside the passenger compartment will rapidly raise the CO2 concentration to a couple thousand parts per million. We found it best to wear a heavy filtered mask like for the flu for Covid to stop your breath from projecting straight forward in a stream of high concentration . It still comes out, but at least it’s kind of stays around in your face area.. Hey nitrogen, helium or nitrogen hydrogen with a dedicated leak detector for hydrogen or helium. Works much better and you never have to worry about CO2 contamination from your breath or vehicles being started or driven in and out of the shop while you’re trying to perform your test..

Magnificent advice and presentation. I know an "experienced" technician and he never mentioned something like these tools to a noice like me. I worked for him for free in exchange for experience for three months and he took months to issolate network problems which I have solved on campus in the same day... I guess he's a scumbag and not as experienced has he claims to be...

All those expensive and bullshitish leak detection systems and sprays are not very useful for the user after he has purchased them. It's just waste of money for you as a customer and you increase income for the companies which make/sell this stuff. Simple thing: pump up the system with pressure, several atmospheres. You can use CO2 tank for that. Observe gauge to see if pressure drops rapidly. If it does then you have major leak, shouldn't be difficult to find. If it doesn't drop rapidly, use tyre spray / leak detection fluid and spray common leak areas: firsly all the joints for possible leaks out of o-rings and lose fittings, compressor and its area, entire radiator (especially its lower end there it gets sand and stone blased), dryier. You WILL find a leak. No need to thank me.

You're over complicating it all you need is a smoke generator for evap and vacuum leaks, and nothing but a black light UV flashlight for HVAC. Plus these two items are not near as expensive. And if you're testing an ac system just nitrogen and a set of gauges and a micro-gauge.
