------------------------------------
I am sharing a particular way of approaching a car seat's bulky bolster using a red piping trim in the center junction of its two side pieces.
A pair of red lines of stitches run along a red piping both sides. The same process can be applied on a real sports car seat. I am doing a demonstration on real leather material. I am using is a double needle, walking foot (triple transport), post bed Durkopp&Adler 268-FA-373 sewing machine. The needles are 160 = 23 size. The red polyester threads are 138 size.
The distance between the needles was set up at a distance or 10 mm. I would have liked a 1/2" of an inch wide between the lines of stitches to make the piping stand out much better.
Some tips to remember included in the video:
1. The making of molds help a lot to shape a flat or bulky surface. These procedures are taught in our basic courses.
2. Before cutting a piece determine the stretch side of leather, vinyl and backing headliner foam material. It helps to give the desired shape.
3. 'Reference marks' are of great importance to ease the sewing process.
4. 'Head-pins' are useful to hold molds and real pieces onto the foam piece.
5. Flat surfaces can be foam backed over our table work. Bulky surfaces should be foam backed over the same bulky/rounded surface.
6. Before sewing the edges of our foamed pieces they should be flattened down by sewing the first two lines of stitches. One on the very edge and other at a distance of 0.8 mm giving an allowance of 2 mm for our 'last closing/blind sewing'.
7. The most common piping cord thickness is 1/8" of an inch (3.2 mm)wide.
8. The skiving of the piping leather strip helps to fold the flaps over to the sides easing the sewing process.
9. The piping attaching is done with 6 mm long stitches. This line of stitches should be unsewn to let the leather piping strip flaps freely open to the sides.
10. Some staples are useful to baste the edges to ease the sewing process. Tailors and seamstresses do it with thin threads and pins.
11. A thin strip of vinyl is useful for the french seams backing.
12. As we can realize the cover without much effort fits like a glove to the bolster. Some of the leather shaping techniques are taught in our door-panel course.
I hope this video is useful and inspires you to enter into the marvelous upholstery world!

What is the consistency between the needles you have at the durkop adler column?
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo 5 ай бұрын
The consistency/evenness under the presser feet is good for the welting, leather edges and backing underneath. Or perhaps you are referring to firmness/cohesion. The pieces are strongly sewn down together: the leather welting is joined to the bolster leather edges with a sewing, the seam edges are also sewn down with double stitches to a thin canvas backing/reinforcement beneath.

I'm preparing to sew a fairly expensive leather jacket. The leather I have chosen looks to be very similar in weight to what you use in this video. May I ask what needle you chose for this project? I have the same Pfaff machine and I would appreciate any suggestions you can offer regarding needle and thread type.
@Cechaflo
@Cechaflo Жыл бұрын
I suppose you are going to use a very soft and pliable leather for the jacket. I would suggest thin needles for your jacket project. A 110=18 needle size would be advisable. Thin threads too. A 69 or 92 size would be advisable. Short stitches for the closing sewing to attach pieces together. 3 mm long would be ok. The top stitches would be similar with the thin threads and 3 mm stitching length. I would recommend for the jacket a 1 mm thick leather. Otherwise it would be advisable to skive the edge if you have the skiving machine.
