There are currently 150 McDonald's restaurants throughout the country and Claire Dickson from Otago Girls High School is about to find out what goes into running one successfully. Operations Manager Mike McCaffrey explains one of the main roles of any restaurant manager is to ensure outstanding customer service, a clean environment, business planning and profitability.
Part of that includes employing the right people for the right job and Claire is soon involved sitting in on interview for a prospective employee. Experience isn't essential as many of those applying for crew member roles have no work experience and are still at school but enthusiasm is a must. Staff have regular performance reviews which allow management and employees to create a development path to move forward.
Claire discovers one of the perks of being the restaurant manager includes taste testing to ensure customers are always getting the highest quality product as attention to detail in all aspects of the business is crucial.
Planning is another important role and with between 80 and 90 crew members and 10 managers at just one McDonald's, everyone must be kept in the loop. Claire runs the shift manager's meeting and explains a new promotion about to be marketed.
Having started as a crew member, Mike has worked his way up to a management role that he absolutely loves. Claire can see there is plenty of potential for a great career within a company that thrives on fun and success.
