100 years after it was first developed, crystallography is still a driving force of scientific discovery and innovation. Revealing the hidden structure and beauty of materials, it gives an insight into the invisible.
This film from Diamond Light Source celebrates the work and lives of Sir William Henry Bragg and his son, Sir William Lawrence Bragg. Together, they established a new scientific discipline. A son with the theoretical understanding and father with the experimental technique to harness this knowledge.
The technique emerged a century ago, but its power to reveal the minutiae of matter is as strong today as it was then. This film journeys through the key experiments and insights from 1912, and the torrent of discoveries that followed. With interviews and commentaries from leading scientists and historians of today, it is an exploration of the scientific and human story behind the past, present and future of one of the most important ever developments in science.

I feel so grateful to watch such an amazing video. It gives me the idea what is crystallography really about. The human story and history behind the crystallography are the best part of the video.

I just turned my first materials science lab on x-ray diffraction! It is Interesting how this can be applied to biological structures.

"There are seven basic shapes of crystals in nature, and a multitude of colours. The shapes have always fascinated men, as figures in space and as descriptions of matter; the Greeks thought their elements were actually shaped like the regular solids. And it is true in modern terms that the crystals in nature express something about the atoms that compose them: they help to put the atoms into families. This is the world of physics in our own century, and crystals are a first opening into that world." - Jacob Bronowski

Awesome video, thank you. Perhaps the future will see parallel structure determination and functional interactions among the molecules using computer generated models that execute the endless possible interactions of biomolecules and this may lead to one day visualizing consciousness and other complex emergent properties of biology.

My grandfather’s last name was Bragg. I’m probably related to them.

Why did KZbin throw this into my algorithm? Of course, the reason is that algorithms predicted I'd like this. Scary because I would have predicted I wouldn't like this one so much. That means KZbin and Google knows me better than I do. Hey KZbin and Google: You might be right but you're hurting my self esteem. I'd feel like more of a man if you recommended I watch videos about monster trucks, boxing, or assault weapons. Until you listen to me, I'll be subscribing to The Royal Institution.
