Love how there is no frame on these older tractors, everything is just bolted to the giant engine! 👍

This video really sparked some old memories! For some reason, an old dozer came to mind. It had a hand-start pony motor on it that acted as the starter. You would engage the hand crank, bring the pony motor close to TDC, and then give it a good crank. At times it took some effort to get it started, but once it was running, all you had to do was pull a big lever to engage the main engine's flywheel. You could turn that big motor over all day without worrying about running out of battery. And it's a good thing, because a lot of those old diesels didn't start quickly. I was a diesel mechanic in my younger days and had experience with a wide range of equipment. Large off-road mining equipment, farm style equipment, small construction equipment, all the way down to welders and generators. We sure have come a long way. My 3046 starts and runs like a dream. That old equipment almost required a mechanic to get them started! It's great to see you showcase some of the older stuff. The tractor in this video was almost new when I first started out. Can't believe that it (and for that matter, me) is still running. I really enjoyed this video! Keep it up! Thanks, Brock!

Yeah, I love the old equipment even if I don’t know that much about at all. Going to look at some more old tractors later this week.

I have replaced the drive axle on that model, in the field because when they break you can’t move them. That sprocket is fastened to the axle with a 3 1/2” nut. We crafted a Box end wrench out of 3/8” plate. And then to feed that chain back over that sprocket wow keep in mind there is very little access. Our tractor was ballasted to around 12,000 pounds on singles before we had it. We put on duals. In the field that tractor had NO wheel slip which is bad and likely why we broke axels. We dropped 1000 pounds of cast weight from each rear wheel and the slip was still acceptable. I could tell you things about that tractor for hours. It was a hot, loud, dusty ride but it was paid for.

A brute of a tractor. Chain drive was used in the C and D and L and LA series tractors dating back to the late 20's. Also the 500, 600, and 900 models.

It’s hard to believe even a giant chain would live very long under a big mean Tractor like that especially if you were pulling something that was ripping dirt…

Yeah, I didn’t know they made them like that, but apparently John Deere D back in the day was the same way

@@RockhillfarmYT I'm not sure of the percentage but the chain drive transmitted quite a bit more power to the wheels compared to the bull gears used on some of the other brands at the time. Also, since the differentials were running at a higher RPM than the axles they could used smaller components and not have them self destruct.

The contact of the chain wraps around the sprocket - compared to a narrow contact patch for gears.
