Shooting with intention, context, and thoughtfully. Really enjoyed how you talked about making relationships in the town and not shooting as much as you thought you would... those stories, conversations, and relationships will absolutely be reflected in the final images later. Self-Assignment aka giving oneself an opportunity to grow - Loved this video!

Life can be rather random so a random video seems appropriate. Glad that the cleaning of the enlarger worked. Time, grim and dirt can build up and change the colors and I’m pretty sure that the new bulb helped too.

This project reminds me of Hayahisa Tomiyasu's project TTP. He photographed a table tennis table over 2+ years and compiled it into a photobook. I'd highly recommend checking it out!
@tomdivasion7724 Жыл бұрын
True but that was always from the same position not trying to be inventive or creative about capturing it differently which is what willem is seeking to achieve
@Nobody-Nowhere Жыл бұрын
Why would you want to check that out? Its exactly the type of "modern" project that simply repeats one picture over and over again. When i was in school, my friend photographer every floor of a apartment building staircase. It was the same photo over again, only the number changed. One on floor there was a floor cleaner lady. Everyone loved it, he did it because he hated it and showed how easy and pointless it was. Don't follow the form, even if majority believes that recognizing the form is what photography is about. It was Bernd Becher and Hilla Becher, who came up with this catalogue style photography. But at least their pictures were visually interesting.

I love what you did with the rock. such a creative and adaptive mind set! It really dives into the topic instead of just surface level photos of the rock itself! Great video, as usual! Its also so special for me because I go to school in San Luis Obispo and see that rock very often but never would think of being this creative photographing it.

I deeply relate to this video. The perceived need to work in projects ultimately creates pressure to do well on them, as if they were school assignments. Whenever perfectionism makes us believe that a flawless result is the only acceptable one, we are much more likely to disapprove our own art. This can be incredibly frustrating, considering that we DO care about our craft, and spend a large chunk of our energy working on it. Ultimately, letting go of perfection frees us. A single project doesn’t define us as artists, and having the opportunity to do better on the next one is a blessing that keeps us going.

Willem it is a pleasure to have been following your work for the last three years. The day I discovered about your existence, was the day in which I decided to learn how to shoot a film camera. When people ask me who taught me about film photography I always answer "Willem Verbeeck". I admire your work and your way of doing things and I hope our paths come across one day and I get the chance to have a cool conversation with you. Big hug, from Lisbon.

Willem, PLEASE put the shot at 9:50 on your website, itll be such a good addition i absolutely love it its so mysterious and vague but in a calming safe way, thats the best photograph I've seen in a while. Also, loved the video. I especially thought it was cool seeing how you processed the canada trip with one roll, because i had to go through that too on a four day trip recently and i really agree that sometimes the need the photograph and document can become unhealthy at times. You really covered some great topics throughout this video, particularly the potential unhealthy urge to always be photographing your surroundings or capturing your experiences through photography. I recently took a camping trip to my favourite spot and although the primary goal was to make photographs, there were countless scenarios where I battled with documenting an amazing scene or just putting the camera away and enjoying the moment. Also, welcome back to the Subie gang!

I often go out with a somewhat set idea or a subject or at least a specific place I will make photos. Quite often I find it really hard to get started. Nothing looks like a good composition and not inspiring. But once I find even a single composition it is like the spell is broken and I can see more. I have become much more discerning though and typically come home with half or one quarter as many images as I once did.

A word popped into my head regarding Morro Bay... _surrender_... Sometimes you just have to give into the truth of the moment and set aside your agenda to let what's supposed to happen...just happen. Often the universe will reveal something incredibly valuable/meaningful/powerful and had you kept trying to make the moment something it was never going to be, you would have missed it. Side note: super stoked for that WRX on the second channel🤘
