Actually a scene that was cut would have made this all make more sense. Katie was informed on for being part of the communist party by her school prom date. The one Hubbell cuts in on. The only choice was to divorce so he could keep working or for her to inform on others. You know the McCarthy hearings. Hollywood Blacklists. It all happened in real life. Look for the deleted scenes. You’ll see. They also show Barbara and the director discussing this. It made the movie confusing leaving it out.

It’s a shame they split up. They finally arrived at a place of total honesty here. I wish they could have stayed together.
@nancyhey10123 жыл бұрын
I actually thought that it was very predictable that they would split up in the end. There were signs right from the beginning that they just did not have enough common ground. They had chemistry and physical attraction, but that is not enough to build a long-term relationship.
@donkeydump633 жыл бұрын
That's part of what made this such a memorable movie. Ending the film with the two of them parting ways, yet still very much in love evokes some strong feelings and emotions. A lot of people can identify with what these two characters went through. It wouldn't have been the same if they had stayed together. The makers of the film (I'm not sure who) actually wanted to do a sequel with Hubbell and Katie re-uniting, but Robert Redford wisely said no, "leave it be".
@nancyhey10123 жыл бұрын
@@donkeydump63 that’s true. I just think that it was a major premise of the movie that we were supposed to feel sad that they did not stay together. But I personally did not feel sad about it at all, because I found it very predictable that they would break up. I thought they would both be happier with someone else with whom they had more in common. The only thing that I really felt sad about was him not wanting to have contact with their daughter. Yes, doing a sequel would not be a good idea, if they reunited, they would still have the same problems. I think the only way a sequel would work would be if it were told from the daughter’s point of view, maybe about her as an adult seeking out and finding her father.

A narcissist (and probably most people to some degree) can't resist being admired and adored by another human being. It's like oxygen to them and he couldn't resist having this come at him so strongly from Katie even though he didn't love her. The final scene illustrates the outward appearance nature of his current relationship with the woman with him (if it was, in fact a relationship - there is no information on that provided) where his woman, he, himself, his clothes, the best hotel, etc. are all "perfect" on the outside.

My wife was in love with Hubbell when she saw this movie the first time and thought he was so handsome. We watched it again last year and now has a totally different view of the movie and Hubbel..she this he is a snake and all of a sudden no so good looking. When you watch it again Hubbell is really not a good person at all, cheating, leaves his child. Babs is far from good looking, but she turns from homely to pretty because of her character. Redford does the opposite.

She was interesting and quirky. He was just good looking and popular with ‘it’ people. I always wondered why she didn’t fall out of love with him first.

He chose his career over family. Her point of view and political beliefs did not help him career wise.

It was her wish this relationship, this child and she did everything to make it work but she gave 99% and he gave 1% to this affair and her strength scared him to death , so he left immediately and she went on with her life without him and she was strong enough for this step.

For what I have seen of this movie.3or 4 clips. This is a movie of woman that fall in love with her friend Somehow they end up hitting it on getting pregnant and in the end splitting up because they both what diffrent things in life. She wanted the baby he didn't . In giving up the relationship he loses the baby. Whanting to see if a baby is going to make your partner stay is wrong She might have loved him and he her but a child will not make a man love you. And because he left he got to pay child support.
