The virus situation has worsened conditions for sure, but the boat market in so cal is on fire as people want to become liviboards ...as for working? Way of the world..most of us have had to work a lot longer than we wished. MAKARA is not too big if you can build your kitty. Highly recommended. Forget doing the world just get sailing ;forget entertaining watchers, just get sailing. Scale back and save your dough.

I've watched the 2 of you since you started off - prior to sailing off in Varuna - and have found your videos really inspirational (I've always clicked "play" whenever they've appeared in my KZbin feed). Due to programs such as yours, we have bought a yacht and now live aboard with 2 young kids - and are having the time of our lives. I hope you both can once again find the passion and the money to make it possible as you obviously have such a genuine interest in an alternative and independent lifestyle at sea. Best wishes to you both and thanks for the journey so far - remember that it's not over until you say it is - may it continue for another 200 episodes once you find the right yacht!

If you are going to be outta the water for a while, there's no better place than the Great Northwest to do it!! Please be careful with the virus challenges...especially in Washington State. Bad timing for surgery, but you gotta do what you gotta do. The best wishes for a quick recovery!!! I had the same issue of trying to decide what sailboat I wanted, don't let it bug you too much. I started with a blue water cruiser and ended up with a trailer sailer, since I live in Central Oregon far from the ocean. BUT the good news is no $ for marinas or hard storage. I'll never cross oceans, but I can watch you do it! Coastal cruising and lakes in the Great northwest. Looking forward to your next video!!! Cheers!

Hope you guys hang in there. Difficult times financially for a lot of people, but there's always a solution to every problem. You're really the perfect cruising couple so don't give up. As for which boat you should keep? I would probably keep the bigger one if you can make it work financially. For your kind of cruising, I don't think the cost differential between the small boat and the big one is as large as some people say.

Your up here where there's some of the best sailing in the world, You got a boat thats big enough you can have a heater, insulate it, carry enough supplys to last a while. Years ago I had a tri and used to wear shorts only just to sail by boaters with there snowmobile suits and artic wear even with mask on, just to step out of my dodger and wipe the sweet from my head just to watch them shiver!! I've spent 30 years trying to get a big boat and at 68 finally got one, needs lots of work but it's 53' ketch and with back problems and heart problems I don't think I'll have a problem handling it. Most boaters just want a boat to run to the next town! They go south so they don't have to change tack and nothing is in the way! Fix up the boat as you use it, and in 20 years think how great it will look! Do you watch sailing emerald steel? They can sail it blind fold and it's tip top shape! Most commenters have never even had a boat or one over 20'. GOOD luck and take care!

Really sorry to hear about your back acting up again. I hope you get through this with a swift recovery. In terms of Makara.... Unless there is something else about the boat that is uncomfortable to you (e.g. incremental cost due to size?), I wouldn't let the extra room inside be a show stopper. Actually, having a bit of extra room in a boat is a good thing. It will be sad to see Makara go. Well.... we are all pretty much in shut down mode due to CV. You will have plenty of time to think about it. Please be safe!

Im with them on boat size, essentially sailing as a couple counts as single handing , and 50 feet is just too large to be comfortably or safely handled long term, sure you can use powered systems on board to lighten loads but these are not to be relied upon

You've done so much on her sorry to hear she's not quite right. Head south to warmer weather and then figure it all out. Maybe she'd sell quick in SF if needed. Sure wish you'd start sailing even though I enjoy watching you refit your boat. You do great work, Ty giving your back a month after surgery in not ever going to work. If you sit behind a desk, yes a month is good. For physical work you're going to need 4-6 months. Believe me I know. I had a herniated L4 S1 herniation and was a firefighter. I was off 5 months and never looked back. Let yourself heal.

I made a few comments about your "next boat" back when you were in Mexico. Some were project boats ( soft deck- run away!) and some I thought were too big for a couple to have fun with. Perhaps something to ponder. I still think a 42-44 is too big for a couple to enjoy- unless you go expensive and complex. Big sails and big anchors means power everything. More to maintain. T's back showing signs of being chronic. You guys are about the same age as my kids, and I lovingly tell them they ain't gettin' younger. So perhaps a different idea. A 38-40ft, but a newer design. Many have a aft cabin and much more storage than older designs like your Pearson. Everything lighter, easier to manage but well engineered (ie not a "Hunter"). You both can handle a 36ft so a jump to 38-40 is close. And will a 44ft boat be that much easier to manage solo (off watch down below) than Makara? I just don't think the difference is that great, so if you decided to go big, just keep Makara (but that does not seem to fit your plans). Also most things being smaller/lighter, it might be cheaper to buy and cheaper to operate, getting you back out there sooner. Best wishes

Yes, it would be hard to believe that AA would disappear. I thought you had a niche in Baja but I can understand the need to aircondition with a genset and other necessities. I was so proud of your valiant efforts in that heat. Now we are here, in a very big boat for two and what to do? My wife and I had a Youngsun 35, of which we were proud of, but we lived on her for years and thought we needed a bigger boat. We bought a 43 and stayed with her for 3+ years. Finally, we said why are we here living on this apartment boat? We sold her that same time. Now, I lament not having my old, sturdy 35 - 40 seaworthy boat back. If you want you will figure it out and come back with amazing adventures. Keep the faith. An old sea dog says so.

You mentioned a month recovery after back surgery. No.... You will feel better after a month but you haven't healed think in terms of six months. That if you don't re-injure your back which doesn't take much. I have been there. Take you time to evaluate your situation and move forward. Wishing you the best.

It’s kind of funny because I always figured that if the shit really hit the fan, that I’d rent out my place and sail south, but now you might not even be able to check in south of the border or a lot of places across the South Pacific. One could still probably sail to Hawaii and sit out the two week quarantine before they’d let you on land.

Have an interest in boat names and their origin, wish owners would let us landlubbers know because there always seems to be an interesting story attached. I found time while sheltering from the virus to check on Makara and found a pleasant Wiki surprise. "Makara is a legendary sea-creature in Hindu mythology. In Hindu astrology, Makara is equivalent to the Zodiac sign Capricorn. Makara appears as the vahana (vehicle) of the river goddess Ganga, Narmada and of the sea god Varuna" Your cleverness made me smile :-)

@captainbob406

Clean bottom is probably due to the cooler waters Makara has been in. The grass doesn't grow as quickly in cold water. ;-) Should be the same for an aluminum hull.
