The boom middle sheave is for the outhaul, as you guessed. The side sheaves are for reefing, or in some cases is used for a topping lift.

Yes, we’re not sure why a previous owner changed and added the reefing lines externally. I guess we always have a backup if we need to re-run them.

New boat teething issues are fun, right? Bummer you left your nuts and bolts stash on the old boat(s) though. When using seizing wire it is best to make at least one extra wrap (or more if there is room) before making the twist. Just like on a winch the extra wraps give the wire much more purchase and the friction of each wrap takes most of the load off of the twist tie, where the wire is the weakest because of the sharp bending of the twisted wire. Otherwise all of the force is at the twist itself and the seizing will fail prematurely at a much lower force. Plus it can't be tightened or snugged up much without breaking it right away. It's best to put as many wraps through the hole as will possibly fit and snug each loop up as you go pulling wirh thr pliers to get it tight. Then put only enough force on the twisted loop to bring it up flush, pulling it tight before twisting and making the twist carefully to take up the slack. It looked pretty gnarly up there in that anchorage. I hope the fix worked long enough to get someplace better with the proper sized bolts.

All very true!! I think Ty had a limited time up there due to the swell, otherwise would have definitely done that. Anyway, it held until we got to shore, so yay!

We love Santa Cruz, so much exploring to do there! Though after spending so much time in the protected bays anchorages in the Sea of Cortez, it was very rolly out there!

Good to pick up your story. Didn't see any locktite or mousing on the shackle running inside the boom. Could be annoying if it rattles apart in a month.

Isn't your headsail halyard sheave too close to the furling forestay..Don't you need a certain angle of about 10 degrees to avoid halyard wrap around. Don't believe that two piece halyard deflector was doing the job, specially with missing hardware.. You need to redo that angle and might install a better deflector or install a deflector fairlead below the top sheave..Anyway you understand this for sure.. The one you have is a WICHARD Furler Wrap Stop. The larger section halves should be facing forward hence keeping the halyard in place ..

Not sure that we can change the angle or distance without changing the design of the forestay or mast? We're not too familiar with this, but I don't think it's something can be easily changed. As for the Wrap Stop, you are corrent, larger half faces out - it may have been shown the other way in the video while Ty was getting the screws/wire in place.

The outhaul, no - we were the ones that de-rigged and re-rigged (removed and replaced the boom) and did not inspect it. We’re guessing that maybe the screws missed getting some locktight

Uh Oh... Locked-down armchair sailor alert... It is possible that your outhaul fitting failed because your main clew was floating and not held down to the boom either by a slider in the boom track or a webbing strop around the boom. Either way holds the clew a constant height relative to the boom and reduces snatching when/it the sail flogs. While easy with hindsight to say it... It's a shame the halyard deflector or the very stiff halyard sheave was not spotted when the mast was down and the rig checked... I really need to plump my cushions

Rigging a mainsail that way is possible, and traditionally an older style of rigging. This mainsail is rigged “loose-footed,” which means there are no slides holding the base of the sail in - it allows you more adjustment in sail shape. Either way, the tack and clew points are designed to take the load, slides aren’t designed to take that kind of load, more just hold shape 👍

@@AdventureAdriftSailing I agree, yours is loose-footed, but, today's loose-footed mains are always fixed to the boom at the clew end with a metal slider or webbing loops (as seen on a Laser dinghy or IMOCA 60), both methods stop the clew rising (nd boom potentially dropping) as outhaul is eased. Personally I have never seen a mainsail/rig in modern materials with sliders on the foot - attachment here is usually done with a boltrope slid into the boom's footgrove which often also takes the stackpack/lazy jack sail bag. The exception to the above is on wooden spars with no fixed sail track. It is your boat, so you naturally choose to do it your way, while rigging in Europe I have only seen your way on boats that have suffered damage to sails and/or stackpacks and the biggest mast and rig supplier here (Selden) do not rig your way, so you will not convince me. The rigger only did the standing rigging and mast step. We were the ones that de-rigged and removed and replaced the boom- should have done a thorough inspection, but we were on a pretty tight timeline. We definitely should have replaced the halyard, but that’s been done now

A little tip for getting your wire tighter. Use a long piece so your can get some leverage on it when it comes to twisting. Don't start in the middle do it at the end/corner of the hole. Next take the outside wire and run it perpendicular to the inside wire and then take that wire and bend it towards the other wire. At this point you should have 2 wires inline with each other but 90 of the hole. Then do two twist keeping the wires at 90 degrees of the hole for two twist, then move your hands away from the whole so they are 45 degrees to the hole and twist away.
