2024 is almost done and I’m trying to squeeze a few more books in before it’s done. What books are you trying to get to before 2025?

I really want to finish my list of 10 sci-fi books I gave myself to read at the beginning of 2024. At this point I’ve read 5 and among those I need to still get to is Wild Seed by Octavia Butler so I’m a bit scared😅

Used to be the same for me, but then Emily discovered cozy fantasy and Emily Henry and I went, “I can get down with that” and here we are, with actual overlap. I’ll by trying Abby Jimenez now because of Emily too.

I recently read God of the Woods and quite enjoyed it. It was not a thriller, I would classify it as a family drama mystery. It's pretty slow, not very high action though there are some moments of suspense. For me, it really painted a picture, which i enjoyed. It didn't quite have 5 star vibes for me, but a solid 4 star.

I just did a massive book haul. I’m super excited. I got 3 books that are kind of designed to read a chapter or section a day, almost like an advent calendar and I think that’ll help me get some reading done in December, when I usually neglect it entirely. I also got some really cute witchy, cozy, fantasy books that definitely lean more into the female relying on/developing closer relationships with the important women in her life vs finding a man. Also, with characters in their 30s, not young teens. My tastes have changed SO much in just a couple years LoL

I definitely want to read The God of the Woods. I've heard a lot of people talking about that one. I read The Life Impossible and it was okay. I gave it 3 stars. I found it a bit underwhelming compared to some of his other books, which I've absolutely loved. It isn't a bad book though. Very much looking forward to hearing your thoughts on the book that's been compared to I Who Have Never Known Men. The never ending search for books similar to your favourites! ☺

Haig’s wise and moving novel is both a mystery and a love story, a fantasy and a love letter to the planet. Perhaps its greatest gift lies in showing us that it is possible to break down the boundaries we have built, to grasp previously hidden connections, and to appreciate life in all its richness. And to realise that magical realism may not be such an oxymoron after all.

I'll be curious to see if you like Annie Bot, I was thinking about picking it up but also giving it the side-eye for the same reason as you lol I read Huck Finn in school about 15 years ago and remember almost nothing about it but I still enjoyed James!

The Wedding People was great, but also not what I had expected - in the best way. I'm glad I went in blind. I read The God of the Woods in Sept. It is a family drama/literary mystery. For sure NOT a thriller, which I have heard some poeple describe it as. I did enjoy the book. I also live and camp where the book takes place, so found that fun. Lol James is also on my list, as is The Life Impossible. I probably won't get to then this year, but plan to soon! I look forward to hearing your thoughts. Annie Bot made me angry - I finished it in less than a day, but I had mixed feelings about it and how it was executed.

I want to finish The Dollmakers and Words of Radiance this year and perhaps squeeze in another book like one by Emily Austin or another historical romance to clear my brain from fantasy before I jump back into Stormlight Archives next year. 😅 Looking forward to what you think of the Wedding People. I‘ve heard good things but the TWs/CWs put me off it for the moment.

Cannot imagine listening to Incidents Around the House-reading the “child’s” narration was painful enough! If you’re already down on Malerman, I highly doubt this book will make you want to read him anymore. It’s at best a novella stretched to book length. So repetitive and pointless. And glad to see you’re reading another T. Kingfisher-she rarely disappoints. However, this sequel to What Moves the Dead isn’t quite as good as the first book. Really recommend A Sorceress Comes to Call!⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I really liked Anniebot's first half but didn't like the ending. It was a happy ending, but it felt unearned and rushed. The owner makes me angry, and you're supposed to be angry at him. I also think the book needed to work a little better on race dynamics and the nuances of consent. However, it's just noticeable but not enraging, like other books. I hope it helps.

@barbaralemon4170 I'm 51 and I didn't enjoy it. I think it's a matter of personal taste and moment. To me, it felt like the author was putting too much effort into make everything sound mysterious and, I don't know, with a tense atmosphere, but it didn't feel natural. The writing wasn't for me.
