@Miami! Thank you for shining some light on real drums! I am not a snobby elitist, throwing hate at sample replacement (I actually participate in sample augmentation - a little) but I feel like most KZbin channels totally disregard real drums these days. In a world full of samples, it is my opinion that real drums instantly stand out. So focusing on real drums is a huge win. Thank you my friend!

Something I noticed in the video as well! I use the 3rd light on jst clip like 80-90% of the time as well. It's often the perfect sweet spot! :)

Miami, I think I said it before when you took over here at the jst channel: your videos are nothing but awesome. It makes me happy for everyone who is starting out these days. I'm in this for a little more than a decade now and had to learn this stuff by watching through 100s of hours of videos, experimentation and experience. One of the key elements of teaching is didactic reduction. Means breaking down complex things and concepts into smaller bits without using too much technical vocabulary. And you really mastered that. PS: kinda makes me happy that your video and the comments confirm that the 3 setting on jst clip is just the perfect setting for 90% of the time :D

Wow! You say basic? This is some next-level stuff that nobody's really putting on the plethora of drum mix videos on KZbin. I was expecting something totally different. The typical EQ and parallel compression stuff. You really got me thinking Miami!

I split the kick into beater/low end/fast atk slow release and front/highs/medium atk and release. I use addictive drums 2 and that fixed the boomy kick I used to have.

Hey Miami! I really do think that JST Clip is the sweet sauce of drums. I’ve done a lot of live drum mixes and this is what brings the life out of the kick and snare. Ngl, I will always use Saturn on Toms, but everything else gets the clip. What’s the weirdest distortion plug-in that you’ve put on a room track?

@@joeymusic I still use POD Farm all the time. I will never let it go. I keep finding new uses for it - using the distortion on drums and percussion, the reverb on everything, driving the preamps hard for saturation. Not too shabby for something that is like a decade and a half old now 😆

Jordan from Hardcore Music Studio made a video on how important drums. There is literally no way to get a good mix without great sounding drums. Also, not that my opinion means anything, but I have to recommend the Oxford Drum Gate. Super versatile, does loads of stuff.

A stupid question here what is the difference between using a clipper or a saturator on drums? For instance we can use JST Clip to add some body to Kick, Snare, Toms and etc. and we can use a saturator which also adds some body to any instrument. Or am I missing something? As always great video Miami! Thank you so much!
@nottheone3408

Soft clippers make stiff louder without sounding squashed. Saturation adds harmonics for a more full rich sound

I have been a professional recording engineer since 1980. There are countless things that you can do to make a track sound “ better.“ the important question is did making the track sound better make it sound “ good?” If you don’t know the difference between better and good, no plug-in is going to save you.

Out of sounds, sure, there are guitar tones that suck and bass tones that suck, but drums are so damn variable and drums that sound like wood blocks or paper just make any mix lose 90% of it's energy and push and pull/impact. Shame there isn't more of an attention on properly recording/processing/choosing drums in metal, they really can make or break and add massive character to a mix.
