What fun research! I think everything you showed looked delicious to me. Thank you! I made a similar comparison about 20 years ago and found Kosher chickens that had to be ordered from a Meijer grocery store seemed the best. (And most expensive). Ordering a case (12 birds) at a time and prepaying was required. I couldn't help thinking about how all those businesses and you all are faring through the icy winter weather. My area of Indiana got 12" of snow - difficult but better than ice. Sending blessings to all.

Wow, I bet they were delicious! We have feared fairly well. We are still struggling with our streets with the 12 inches of snow and ice underneath. Kansas had the ice much worse than us. My Husband‘s been having to take my daughter to work in the four-wheel-drive truck because her car just couldn’t make it. We had to dig her out and get the car home and just barely got it in the driveway Before it wouldn’t go any further. Luckily, we have a top driveway as well so we can use that one until we get her situated. I hope you are doing well in your 12 inches! Thanks so much for watching and commenting friend! Blessings on you and yours during this time of snow! 🤗😁❄️☃️

I was always lead to believe that old hens were for stewing only. Like a rooster. Too tough and scrawny for anything more. They would make wonderful stock but not at that price! I totally loved this video - you sure came up with a winner this time! You are the true example of living a purposeful life! That must be why you seem happy most of the time (Mark also). I bet that old hen had it's feet on to provide the stock with more collagen, also. GREAT test and info. Thank you so much. I=m shocked at the prices. I usually buy thighs in quantity for my meals - never whole chickens so it was pure sticker shock for me. But again, roasting all the bones once you cook them will add even more flavor to stock. You guys have thought of everything.

Hi sweet Mary! Old hens and roosters are great for stew and Stock! But like you said, at that price, forget it! I tried to make every minute of my day be of purpose and intentional! I do take a break and maybe watch a partial video on prime or a couple of shorter KZbin videos. Other than that, I’m pretty much trying to be productive most of the day. Although, that is a problem when I consider I should rest and focus on God on my Sabbath. I’ve been doing a study on spiritual discipline and I love all the information I am learning about the Sabbath. So I hope to be better at resting at least one day a week. Yesterday I shoveled a big part of our drive and was hoping to get out there today, but I’m guessing it’s gonna be pretty frozen up since it melted some yesterday and it was extremely cold last night. So I might have to put that on the back burner. my body thinks that would be a good thing too. 🤣 as usual thank you so much for chiming in and sharing your stories and knowledge with us. I just love hearing from you! Blessings on your week, sweet friend! 😁🤗☃️🍗🙌

What a wealth of information. Thank you. Here in Canada I know my parents would source chicken from our local Hudderite Colonies- no antibiotics or growth hormones. Not sure if they were free run or free range. Something I need to look into. I do not think they will be budget friendly but you get what you pay for.

Hi Barb! I had to look up Hutterite Colonies. Apparently they provide most of the pork and eggs in Montana. What I read said they do free range their egg birds, but they didn’t say anything about their meat birds. But you’re right about maybe not budget friendly. I know we will eat less chicken in the future, but we will eat it knowing it is better for us and better tasting. Hope you’re doing well. Blessings on your week sweet friend! 😁🤗

That was so very interesting and much appreciated. This past year we were able to purchase whole chickens locally . It is a very different bird than the grocery store. Much better for us I’m sure. Val C ❤️🙏🏻

@ 🤗❤️ Will let you know. My last roasting chicken was a splurge- bought ‘name brand’ as remembered the taste so fondly. Boy was I disappointed! Thought maybe my taste buds at 74 had gone awry. Thanks again for this post.

If you’re willing to go to NC there is a farmer that grows his own non gmo organic free range chicken. Eventually he may ship

That is a fur piece to drive Lisa! But it would be nice to find somewhere like that around here! Although do I do have a friend about 30 minutes from me that will be growing some in the spring. So I do have that option. Thanks so much for watching and for your comment. It’s always nice to hear from you! I hope you are doing well, sweet friend! 🤗😁🍗🐓

Do you have access to Hutterite or Amish chickens? We get Hutterite chickens for $8 each. And they are excellent! The stew hen will make the most delicious broth. We buy them from the Hutterites for that specific reason.
@OpenHandFarm2 күн бұрын
We have some Amish farms around us that we could check into. I assume it would be spring before they have a lot available. The next time we go to Windsor, Missouri we will check it out. That’s an excellent idea! Oh yes, that hen did make a great broth. I did go ahead and can the legs and wings and cut the other meat off and canned it and then I stuck the carcass in with the feet with some other chicken bones and made a marvelous broth! Thanks so much for watching and for your encouraging words! It’s always a pleasure to hear from you!

@OpenHandFarm thank you. We live similar lives. You feed into mine... I hope to share back! The Hutterites are our chicken connection. It is such an asset to us we travel a state away to get them!

@jenniferr2057 Wow, they must be amazing to do that. I will definitely look around and see if we have any in our area. Thanks so much for sharing. And I am so glad that we can overlap each other’s lives and help to encourage and grow each other! You are a blessing to me! 😁🤗

The local pig chicken would clearly be out of the question for me. It is extremely overpriced for a free range chicken. I have raised my own chicken and I can tell you I would not pay that price. When we process chickens they go into a watered ice bath immediately after processing and sit in it for a full 24 hours before we freeze them.
@OpenHandFarm6 күн бұрын
Hi Teresa, I agree it is pretty pricey. That’s why I want to check some of the local stores that carry the same brand and see if it might be less expensive since it’s not a butcher shop. The smaller one from Bickel Meyer was good as well so we might go see what else they have that we might be interested in. It was a good exercise to see what is available to us though. Thanks so much for the info about the water bath. I was thinking I would need to do that before I canned the birds that we process. I always love hearing from my viewers and learning from them! Thanks for watching and for commenting! Blessings on your week! 😁🤗🍗🐓
