Did I just witness a Chinese auntie conspiracy? Every Spring in Guangdong a certain tree bursts with bright red and orange blossoms. Find one on the ground and you'll feel lucky. Get hit by one and you may be bruised. They are big beautiful blossoms that most people ignore, letting them rot away on the walkways. Yet I've witnessed a few aunties gathering them up and taking them away. But why? Secret currency? Flower gold? Weird food? I want to find out!
Come with me as I try and unlock a mystery that's been bugging me for years.

Yes, kapok can be used to make soup or tea. In traditional Chinese medicine, it can clear away heat and treat dysentery. You can learn about five flowers tea in Chinese.

I was visiting my in-laws in Shenzhen this past March. I saw many Mumian flowers fall on the ground. My mother in-law said people cook soup with this kind of flowers. But I never had chance to try them. It was very brave that you tried to cook with them. BTW, I came from your little red book channel. Good job, and please keep shooting more interesting videos.

There are a lot of them! Now they are all spreading cotton like clumps everywhere. I was out today and noticed the fluffy blobs floating in the air. Thanks for your kind words. I have some fun videos coming!

Okay how about a quick gear list, not camera. But tripods, lights, especially your macro set up of the flower. Thanks! Terrific video!

Gosh, let's see. I don't focus on the gear too much but depending on the shoot I bring lots of stuff. Check out my Wuzhen video to see the travel camera stand I use (LINK: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jZXIkK14aKappZY). Lighting was nothing special, just a little daylight balanced LED panel with diffusion. Macro was a little turntable I have to get the movement and then I used the lens flip trick for the extreme close-ups (Google "macro lens flip trick"). Perhaps I'll do some shorts in the future showing a few of the hacks I use.

They sure do! Five flower tea I believe is the most common but there are others too. Do a search for Kapok tea and you'll get some results.

Nice video and you spent a lot of effort on getting the various shots. I think if you want to find out what is a good way to cook something, ask a friendly aunty. Another way is to ask any traditional chinese medicine hall. They would probably tell you whether it can be used as a tea or in soups, plus what it is good for.

Thanks for the tip and for watching! I would love to become an auntie's culinary student but it didn't work out for this video. Hopefully in the future. I love those medicine halls as well.

@@cinematicsomething Most traditional medicine is bitter. I think a good way to ease yourself in is to just get some teas e.g. chrysanthenum and rock sugar (maybe add some goji berries too).

Yes! All true. I noticed the flower logo on the China Southern airplanes and found out it was the official flower of Guangzhou while doing research for this episode. Just another reminder of how important the flower is to the region.
