Ralph’s dad working on the furnace sounds exactly like all the times I had to work with my dad on a house project. The man wove a tapestry of obscenity that hung in the air over the house for weeks. 😂

A lot of people feel an error in this movie was the fire already burning in the fireplace before the family walked downstairs to open presents. I feel this was not an error, as the mom or dad woke up at 5 am or so, to use bathroom, and started fire to make the room cozy as he or she knew boys would be opening presents in a couple of hours.

I had heard that the director and producers originally had wanted Jack Nicholson to play the dad. But for some reason either Nicholson wasn’t available or he was too expensive, and Darren McGavin ended up getting the role. But they later realized that McGavin was perfect for this role. They said, “He really WAS the old man.”

Tinkertoys are a building toy. Back in the day, they were Oreo-shaped wooden pieces with multiple holes for wooden rods to fit into. By the 1970s, the rods came brightly painted. Those are the ones I played with. By the mid-90s, the pieces were plastic. Those are the ones my kids played with.

This has been my favorite Christmas movie for years. I get a huge kick out of the cartoony cussing, the eloquent descriptions of childhood thought, the melodramatic acting in childhood imaginations, the showing of common school moments, the goofiness of some traditions, family spats, and American Midwest family tropes, ... all of it wrapped around Christmas.

I find it really funny that the girl that points outside where Flick is stuck to the pole tries to do it as covertly as possible to not seem like the class snitch and she still finds the whole thing funny because she has a smile on her face. By the way, when the father is outside looking at the lamp in the window, the guy that comes up to him and asks him what it is is the director of the film Bob Clark. Just a bit of pointless trivia. Merry Christmas everyone!

Holy moley I never knew that was Bob Clark that scene! I'll give you one in return - you might already know, In _Jaws_ the reporter on the beach is a momentary cameo by Peter Benchley - the author of the book the film was based upon. I remember reading that book as kid in the early 70's. Scared the hell out of me. I was 14 when it came out in theaters that summer and everyone in the place was terrified. When that head rolled, popcorn and soda went EVERYWHERE. I'll never forget it.

The turkey thing is that for a lot of recipes, for the best taste, most even cook, etc you are supposed to let it rest for as long as you had it in the oven. It is not finished cooking yet until you have done that! There is usually gravy served with because even if the bird has cooled, the gravy is still hot!

One of the problems with household electrical was that they used fuses that would be screwed in to the circuit. Not only could you put the wrong sized fuse in, you could put a penny in the back of the receptacle to keep the circuit live regardless of if the fuse popped. Given they could overload the circuit without the fuse popping, I can guarantee they've either got the wrong sized fuse or a penny in there.

Most of this movie was filmed in Toronto, Canada. The Chinese restaurant building is still the same today, and if you look in the window, you will indeed see the leg lamp in the location the family ate as a hommage to the film.

When I was a kid I saw the commercial for this movie when it was going to play on TV and thought it was going to be scary. I saw the wicked witch, Santa pushing him down the slide with his foot, and the kid getting his tongue stuck to the pole so I was freaked out. He also co-wrote the script and there are 4 more movies (titles are way too long to list) where the same family from this one are included (all also narrated by JS). On top of that, there is a 1994 sequel to this movie ("My Summer Story", none of this movie's cast), a 2012 sequel ("A Christmas Story 2" which ignores My Summer Story, also none of this movie's cast), and then a 2022 sequel ("A Christmas Story Christmas" which ignores both of the previous sequels, but includes most of the original movie's cast). The first 4 movies and the original "A Christmas Story" (this one, from 1983) are somewhat based on Jean Shepherd's own childhood.

I always used to imagine that even thought the movie doesn't show it to us, that Ralphie's da might have overheard Ralphie the first time he told his mother what he wanted. It could have happened after Old Man Parker had gotten up from the table and left the room saying that he was "running late already". That way the dad could have gotten it for him and wrapped it in secret.

Of course! You have to pull the chain so the tank up at the ceiling will let the water down to flush the toilet. How else would you flush a toilet in 1939? You take the turkey out to baste it, to stop it from drying out, then back in to bake some more. And yes, it was _Die Hard 2: Die Harder._ The actor from _Close Encounters of the Third Kind_ who played the mom wasn't warned about the duck or its beheading so the director could get her natural reactions, which were priceless!

No joke, I was out on 12/23 shopping for gifts (yes, I am a born procrastinator and will always wait until the last minute). In a sports and film/television memorabilia store, they had a giant poster of "Flick" in this scene with the actor's autograph. It was pretty cool, and I almost got it for my brother - who would quote this movie religiously. But I held off for something a little more practical and cheaper.

"No, no! I want an Official Red Ryder Carbine-Action Two-Hundred-Shot Range Model Air Rifle!" "You'll shoot your eye out, kid. Merry Christmas. Ho! Ho! Ho!" Merry Christmas! ✝️ 🙏 🎄 🎁 Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Zack Ward. Historical Fact: Red Ryder was a character from comic books and radio in the 1930s/40s, akin to popular western heroes like Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, and the Lone Ranger. Gun Enthusiast Fact: Due to this film's popularity, the Daisy Rifle Company has started producing Red Ryder BB Guns for sale during the Christmas season. It has become one of Daisy's best selling rifles. Movie Magic Fact: For the scene in which Flick's (Scott Schwartz) tongue sticks to the flagpole, a hidden suction tube was used to safely create the illusion that his tongue had frozen to the metal pole. Author Cameo Fact: Jean Shepherd (author of In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash (1966) which forms the basis of this movie) is not only the voice of a narrator, but is also the irate man waiting in the Santa line at the department store. The woman standing behind him is his wife, Leigh Brown. Toy Enthusiast Fact: The doll in the store window is NOT AN ANNABELLE DOLL! Raggedy Ann is a character created by American writer Johnny Gruelle (1880-1938) that appeared in a series of books he wrote and illustrated for young children. Raggedy Ann is a rag doll with red yarn for hair and a triangle nose. Her brother, Raggedy Andy, is similar to his sister, but he has a sailor cap and overalls. Automobile Enthusiast Fact: The people of Cleveland were incredibly cooperative during filming, donating antique vehicles from every corner of the city. These vintage vehicles helped to enhance the authenticity of the production design. During the filming in downtown Cleveland, the antique automobile club members whose cars were used were given a route to follow on Public Square. They were instructed to continue circling the square until otherwise instructed. Road salt was a major concern for the car owners and the cars were pressure-washed after each day's filming and parked underground beneath the Terminal Tower. Fixer Upper Fact: In 2005 the original home used for the exterior shots of the family home was put up for auction on eBay, and avid fan of the movie Brian Jones purchased it directly from the seller for $150K. Jones then spent the following year restoring the home to the way it looked on screen. The exterior was completely restored and the interior was renovated to match the interior of the home shown in the movie (parts of the interior were actually filmed in a Toronto studio). On November 25, 2006, the home finally opened its doors as a tourist attraction. Jones spent close to $500K in preparation for this grand opening. In addition, he also purchased a house across the street and converted it to a gift shop and museum dedicated to the film and the house.

Additional trivia: Comic book characters Flash Gordon and Ming the Merciless were written to appear in this movie in one of Ralphie's fantasies where he'd save the former from the latter, but the fantasy scene was cut due to time issues. Both characters were still listed in the cast credits at the end of the movie. Peter Billingsley, the actor who played Ralphie, would later become an executive producer for the Iron Man movie and star in it and Spider-Man: Far From Home

On the 21st, my younger brother took me to see this, and Peter Billingsley (Ralphie) was the special guest and he did a question & answer session after the film and he had some very funny stories to tell about the making of the film. It was a great time! Merry Christmas! BTW, I also have the leg lamp, which stays out all year. :)
