The key takeaway here is that Ralphie tells his mother, his teacher, and Santa about the BB gun. He never mentions it to his father, who seems indifferent and distracted by the furnace, the dogs next door and his major award, yet he knew all along what his son wanted. He was almost as excited to give his son the gift as his son was to receive it. There's even a clue in the movie when the father says, "Santa knows. He always knows."

I have watched this movie for 35 years. Seen it so many times, I have every scene in my head. Yet, I never EVER stopped and realized that. At one time, all boys had a level of fear of their father. It kept us in check. But yeah dude, I never once realized that detail. Amazing!

I grew up with this film. Born in '78 in Cleveland. My dad grew up in Lakewood where the school was. My mom tracked down Life Buoy soap (they didn't have the red one, but it didn't taste much different than the normal soap). I still have the Red Ryder BB gun my parents bought me. The sight is off, but I worked around it. I now live in Columbus and my parents have passed, but the movie is a must watch every year.

This movie has become larger than a movie. I mean, it plays 24 hours STRAIGHT every year. I have watched this movie more times than any other movie on Earth and the kicker is, I only watch it close to Christmas time. When I was younger I stayed up for the entire 24 hours of A Christmas Story. I watched EVERY single showing that year just cause I was a teenager and wanted to see if I could. At the time it also was helping me hang on to my inner kid at a time I was too cool for that. This is a special piece of art, it's more than just a movie for us. The memories I have of watching this with family is priceless.

That man at 5:24 , to those who don't already know, is Jean Shepherd, author, 70's radio host, raconteur, and the author of this movie. He is also the author of several humorous books, and in the 1970's had his own radio show on NY Radio station WOR. Back in those days, some people appreciated Jean Shepherd's humor so much that they personally recorded his radio shows, and many of those recordings are posted elsewhere here on KZbin. Edit: And he is also the narrator of this movie.

What a treasure! I love how gracious they all are. I bought small versions of the "F R A G I L E" panel and the leg lamp for my mom. She keeps them up year-round in her guest bedroom, eliciting nostalgic smiles. My dad, now in his 80s said this movie captures what times were like. The documentary "Road Trip for Ralphie" is precious. An engaged couple exuberantly seek out the movie's filming locations. It's almost as wonderful to tag along in their journey.

I didn't even notice he was in Elf, I went back and watched the DVD to see his cameo. I had no idea that was Peter in Elf. I only went back and watched it because someone else mentioned it to me. I was SHOCKED at how young 'Ralphie" was at the tome.

Now if only Billingsley could possibly portray the Roman Centurion Lucius Catanius aka Lucius of Cyrene in a Biblical movie epic with Ian Petrella as Jesus, R.D. Robb as Disciple Simon Peter, Scott Schwartz as Disciple Thaddeus, Zack Ward as Disciple Bartholomew, Chevy Chase as Pontius Pilate, Clint Eastwood as The Older Lucius Catanius (doing narration), and that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

My grandmother worked at that Higbees. The house used for the outside shots is right around the corner from where my dad grew up in Cleveland. My wife's aunt is an extra in the movie. She is in the Santa/ slide scene. The elementary school is right next to the old West Tech High School, where my dad and grandfather went to school. That movie clicks with my childhood in Northern Ohio.

Then for my very last gift I got my mother handed me a long wrapped box. When I opened it it was a red rider BB gun. I quickly ran outside put a few targes up in an oak tree and on the 3rd shot the BB bounced off the branch and hit me in the forhead. When I walked back into the house I had my head down low laughing. When my mother saw what happened she also started laughing and said those famous line. "You are going to shoot your eye out."

I saw this movie when it released at the ole Portage Theater on Milwaukee Avenue in Chicago. There weren't alot of people who went out initially to see it. I and another movie goer laughed so hard at this movie! The other dude laughed as loud as I did especially every scene with the 'old man'. Great movie!

I am as old as this movie. I watched this when I was a kid and now I have kids of my own. I just hope my kids will understand that this is not what 1983 looked like.

One of my favorite movies of all time. I went to the 20th anniversary of the movie and the cast was there watching the movie with us. I met them all and they were all SO nice. Zack ("Scut") took a pic with me and he was taking fake bully pics with people. He was incredibly nice. Had a nice conversation with Scott ("Flick") as well and he was also incredibly nice. Peter (Ralphie) left before the movie started, he tried to sneak out when the lights went down and everyone in the audience was screaming "bye Ralphie" lol. He was sitting in the seat at the theater and I asked if I could take his pic and he said yes and he didn't smile at all but the girl he came with sitting next to him did. Darren ("Old Man") was there too but he was in a wheelchair and not signing due to health issues and not being capable but he was waving to people as much as he could lift his arm to do so. It was both sweet and sad at the same time. J.D. Robb ("Schwartz") was there and he was taking pics and seemed very sweet and quiet. Ian ("Randy") was there but only saw him for a moment. Bob Clark was there as well. I got them all to sign my DVD of the movie. The Mom was not there which wasn't surprising. It was definitely a great experience. There were so many people that showed up they had to do a second showing but only the first showing had the cast there.
