The key takeaway here is that Ralphie tells his mother, his teacher, and Santa about the BB gun. He never mentions it to his father, who seems indifferent and distracted by the furnace, the dogs next door and his major award, yet he knew all along what his son wanted. He was almost as excited to give his son the gift as his son was to receive it. There's even a clue in the movie when the father says, "Santa knows. He always knows."

I have watched this movie for 35 years. Seen it so many times, I have every scene in my head. Yet, I never EVER stopped and realized that. At one time, all boys had a level of fear of their father. It kept us in check. But yeah dude, I never once realized that detail. Amazing!

I grew up with this film. Born in '78 in Cleveland. My dad grew up in Lakewood where the school was. My mom tracked down Life Buoy soap (they didn't have the red one, but it didn't taste much different than the normal soap). I still have the Red Ryder BB gun my parents bought me. This movie has become larger than a movie. I mean, it plays 24 hours STRAIGHT every year. I have watched this movie more times than any other movie on Earth and the kicker is, I only watch it close to Christmas time. When I was younger I stayed up for the entire 24 hours of A Christmas Story. I watched EVERY single showing that year just cause I was a teenager and wanted to see if I could. At the time it also was helping me hang on to my inner kid at a time I was too cool for that. This is a special piece of art, it's more than just a movie for us. The memories I have of watching this with family is priceless.

That man at 5:24 , to those who don't already know, is Jean Shepherd, author, 70's radio host, raconteur, and the author of this movie. He is also the author of several humorous books, and in the 1970's had his own radio show on NY Radio station WOR. Back in those days, some people appreciated Jean Shepherd's humor so much that they personally recorded his radio shows, and many of those recordings are posted elsewhere here on KZbin. Edit: And he is also the narrator of this movie.

She keeps them up year-round in her guest bedroom, eliciting nostalgic smiles. My dad, now in his 80s said this movie captures what times were like. The documentary "Road Trip for Ralphie" is precious. An engaged couple exuberantly seek out the movie's filming locations. It's almost as wonderful to tag along in their journey.

I didn't even notice he was in Elf, I went back and watched the DVD to see his cameo. I had no idea that was Peter in Elf. I only went back and watched it because someone else mentioned it to me. One of my favorite movies of all time. I went to the 20th anniversary of the movie and the cast was there watching the movie with us. I met them all and they were all SO nice. Zack ("Scut") took a pic with me and he was taking fake bully pics with people. He was incredibly nice. Had a nice conversation with Scott ("Flick") as well and he was also incredibly nice. Peter (Ralphie) left before the movie started, he tried to sneak out when the lights went down and everyone in the audience was screaming "bye Ralphie" lol. He was sitting in the seat at the theater and I asked if I could take his pic and he said yes and he didn't smile at all but the girl he came with sitting next to him did. Darren ("Old Man") was there too but he was in a wheelchair and not signing due to health issues and not being capable but he was waving to people as much as he could lift his arm to do so. It was both sweet and sad at the same time. J.D. Robb ("Schwartz") was there and he was taking pics and seemed very sweet and quiet. Ian ("Randy") was there but only saw him for a moment. Bob Clark was there as well. I got them all to sign my DVD of the movie. The Mom was not there which wasn't surprising. It was definitely a great experience. There were so many people that showed up they had to do a second showing but only the first showing had the cast there.
