I finally figured out why this special really doesn’t work. In the original, Jean Shepherd said childish things like the soap poisoning bit and the hierarchy of dares with a real seriousness and gravitas. He spoke as an adult with the tone of someone who still believed all these things, even though logically you know he doesn’t. He takes his younger self seriously because that was what was real at the time. This is how he saw the events he went through. Broderick says these lines like he’s trying too hard to sound childlike, like he’s reciting a story to little kids and talking down to them in the process. He sounds like an adult making fun of his younger self, rather than an adult taking himself back to a past headspace and living in it, which is what Shepherd did.

They should've set the movie in the 30s, 40s, or 50s, sort of Tim Burton-Batman style, where the movie is set in the 1980s/1990s, but looks kinda like the 1940s. That would have been the best for that film. The 2012 pop culture references really date that movie.

Eh, that's debatable - when we read novels out loud in English class, the students did it with such little emotion that the teacher literally said he could get the same results from a text-to-speech program. The reason the author was able to get so much emotion out of it was because... well, it's his own goddamn story, based on his own childhood, so *no duh* he feels passionately about it.

One of many problems I see with Christmas Story Live, in particular, is how the Old Man is portrayed. He's too jolly. He's supposed to be tough and grouchy, but with a heart of gold. That's why his character is so relatable, because most people have a father like that. Chris Diamantopolous is really good actor, having done perfect imitations of Robin Williams and Moe Howard, so he could've done a good version of Darren McGavin here.

The problem with this special was Fox. Everything Fox added was garbage. The original Broadway production actually did a spectacular job at converting the original into a musical that was respectful and truthful to the original. Fox just shoved in a load of filler to pad the run time and cast a bunch of big names who couldn't even sing or act the material properly. Everyone involved in the original Broadway show was passionate about making sure at its heart it stayed the little family story everyone loved. Peter Billingsley (The original movie Ralphie) himself was one of the original producers of the play, as well as a good friend of mine who directed me in this musical when I did it. The most important thing to the production is a good actor playing Jean Shepherd. He is the heart and soul off the production. Broderick was probably the biggest of many reasons this live-show didn't work.

Me and my dad watched this and we both had the same problem with it. It loses all realism (music aside) that embodied the original so well. My dad was born in the '40s, he remembers his parents being the same way when he was a kid. Stern, though they loved him, and the term "wait 'til your father gets home" was meant to make kids straighten out and act right or they were getting an ass whipping (yes yes yes, studies and spanks are bad but this was the '40s we're talking about). The kids (especially Ralphie, being an eldest child), made him remember his childhood, from standing up to bullies without fear of persecution for standing up for yourself, or fantasies that far exaggerate anything mimicking reality, to disappointments that made you sigh and say 'son of a bitch,' without your parents around or you were getting the aforementioned ass whipping. In this, it rips you from the nostalgia - and tries to modernize it to make it 'cool'. But it was fine, perfect, just the way it was, because it was so real. I still laugh at the original father - because he reminds me of my own, some big authoritative 'hardass', but at the end of the day - you knew he loved his kids (seriously watch when Ralphie opens up that BB Gun and tell me the dad doesn't light up with him). What made the original great was that those who lived in those times remember it fondly, and those who didn't get a peak at it from a child's point of view (Yes I know the world wasn't perfect in the 40s, but from a child's view it's just charming).

I mean it’s a sucky stage show, I doubt he was trying his hardest. Also it’s hard to be as expressive in a live show as it is in a voice room where you can move and do whatever the fuck you want. The good thing about having the narrator unseen in the movie is that if we saw his facial expressions and movements on screen he’d look silly, but just hearing it sounds fine.

I hate the excuse that "it's live doing it in one take is hard give them credit" uh HAVE YOU NEVER HEARD OF BROADWAY?!
@MegaKaitouKID14126 жыл бұрын
Broadway is a stage show on a stage set with stage conventions. Audience have a pretty big willing suspension of disbelief when approaching those, entirely related to understanding the limits of the medium and they're especially notable because Broadway shows tend to push the medium to its limits. You can have actors exit the set and have a different background lower and then walk back on and the audience believes that they're now in a different location, for example. Broadway also has months of rehearsals to prepare and then those months pay off with selling tickets for daily or even twice daily shows for months on end. Not only do casts perfect it in rehearsal, but it becomes a well-oiled machine over time due to sheer number of actual performances. Live specials like these, though, use some stage conventions but mostly try to make a live performance look like a normal movie, meaning the sets are realistic and intricate and the actors have to move set to set, with multiple cameras and cuts and different locations, and the cast performs it once meaning they don't have those months and months of rehearsal and then daily performance to absolutely perfect it. The actors also tend to be movie and television actors, not Broadway actors, so they have a different level of comfort with live performance.

This comment is so fucking idiotic. Doing a well-flowing live performance is impressive anyway, Broadway or otherwise?

MegaKaitouKID1412 well maybe they shouldn’t hire regular actors....

I worked on this production and I can tell you, this is nothing like doing a Broadway production. We were all constantly on the move (cameras, actors, rigs, backdrops) all on an acre of WB backlot. So, people don't like the production. That's fine, but give consideration to the amount of effort put in by the hundreds of people involved in pulling off such an ambitious endeavor.

@@MegaKaitouKID1412 Actually, Christmas Story Live DID have months of rehearsals. I read the kid actors actually had their own tutors so they wouldn't fall behind on their education when they weren't rehearsing.

18:24 To be fair “A Market For A Miracle” is the best song in the show. Ironic how a song about Hanukkah is the best song in A Christmas Story.

My dad and I were not crazy impressed with ‘Sound of Music Live’ but liked Carrie Underwood as Maria and the wonderful Audra McDonald as Mother Superior. I watched ‘Peter Pan Live’ but who was in charge of the audio department was a wretched failure as you could never hear the songs (particularly Christopher Walken’s solos) and the speaking lines got muddled constantly. I skipped every one after that because they’re boring

It kind of seems proper of today's times, doesn't it? The "social awareness" (yes, I'm putting it in quotes because most of it is very ironic), the political correctness. I think they ought to just have every religious version of the Holidays put in, :P if they were going for that "everyone can relate to the Christmas season, other than just the popular christian version" bit. What a 3-hour long shit spectacle it would be! :D
