I have a couple comments I’d like to add to this interesting video. The reason behind the GM truck plant closure was probably most likely due to the redesigned 100% new 1988 trucks that began being assembled in April 1987. They are what modern GM trucks are based upon. Prior to that, according to a documentary the 87 GM truck was largely 30 year old technology and loosing to Ford. I once had a 68 GMC built in St Louis. ALSO, these hood areas of St. Louis do represent a quality of life difference between Detroit and St Louis in their prime. You just don’t see the same quality of housing by design. A lot of flat roofs, 4 family flats in this video, and what single houses are shown appear small with virtually no lot to speak of.
@ChrisHarden Жыл бұрын
Good points. Didn’t know that about the GM trucks, but it makes sense that they would build a new facility with newer technology rather than remodel an older one as that’s what the Big 3 often did during those days. I also don’t recall hearing about St. Louis being one of the wealthiest places in the country during the good old days, while I often hear that being said about both Flint and Detroit. I do like the architecture of St. Louis’s older buildings though. They’re unique and you don’t see it in many other places, especially in the Midwest.

@@ChrisHarden St. Louis had more Company headquarters than any other city in the country and by that I don't mean per capita. Annheiser Bush, TWA, Edward Jones, Monsanto, Ralston Purina, Energizer, Rawlings, Nestlé, Venture, Brown Shoes, Spectrum Corp, Emerson Electric, etc. etc. etc. The demise of STL was when TWA shut down. That really hurt the city. Then one bad decision after another ruined the city. Going to bed.

@@ChrisHardenI can confirm that retooling was the reason for the shutdown of the gm plant. I happen to be sitting in the former gm plant right now. I’ve been around this building since it was purchased from gm in 1989 and I’m very familiar with the property.

The city rejected the county in the 1800s. The county has no reason to care about the city. We are constantly fighting attempts the rejoin because of muh reasons. We do not want the city's problems. Born & raised in St. Louis. Went to a trade school & got a Journeyman Machinist book in 1977 AFL/CIO local 31 trying hard to make gains for my future in making good money. Then between 1977 & 1980 St. Louis industry totally collapsed. This after almost a 20 year decline in industry for the area. The black panthers came into Wellson and wiped it completely out & Kinlock was totally out of control.. From that point on, the death warrant for St. Louis was sealed. I got out in 1980 to South Florida working for the U.S. Navy boat yard. Truth be told, today I am scared to even go back to visit my family's graves. Yes it really has become THAT BAD and it's not going to get any better for the rest of my life. The future for that city & county is not good at all. St.Louis's issues are its Politics, Corruption, and Crime, that's what brings down the City. Add the City's Histroy with Race, Unions that holds Companies Hostage and forces them Overseas, doesn't help matters. In Addition to that TWA screwed over their Airport by taking it over as a Major Hub just prior to them going bankrupt. When I flew into it in 2022 for a St.Louis Blues Game & I was in town to see if I wanted to join the St.Louis County Police Department, I couldn't get over how much of a Ghost Town that Airport was. Flying in from Boston, MA, there were only about 12 People on a 40 Passenger Flight, and when I entered the Airport Terminal, excluding the Southwest Airlines section, there was no one there. After American Airlines bought out TWA in the 90's, they have done nothing to invest in that Airport, and it has paid the price for it. After going Downtown for a Blues Game, I couldn't get over how many of the locals fled Downtown after 5PM. The moment they are done with their 9-5 Jobs and any events being held in downtown they are long gone. After driving around Downtown & even the nice Townships of Kirkwood & Ballwin, I couldn't get over how poorly maintained the roads are around the area. After my drive around St.Louis, I decided against the Job. Greatful that I did!

I don't think it was nearly as decrepit as now, or we wouldn't have went there. I've seen videos of East St. Louis which were even more... morbid. There's was a documentary done called the Pruitt-Igoe Myth, about a huge housing project built there, which was very well done. What occurred there, and the end result, pretty much sums-up the entire administration of SL and ESL, and what was to come. White-flight, a racially, red-line, marginalized demographic of poverty, and the emigration of manufacturing compounded the city's demise. And we're talking about some manufacturing moving from SL... to Bowling Green... not China, not Mexico... Bowling Green, KY, which indicates that the city itself has long been managed poorly and corrupt. We are our own worst enemy.
