2700chess says Nepo's peak live rating is 2799.8. He is the closest to 2800 among all players who haven't made 2800, with Radjabov next with a peak live rating of 2799.6. Wikipedia lists a different peak rating for both of them presumably because they use the official FIDE ratings published at the end of every month.

But it does mean Nepo isn't 2800-club unless he raises his rating 31 points above where he is now, which seems to be getting harder as there has been a general ratings deflation. Magnus Carlsen is the only one consistently above 2800 now. Fabiano Caruana is right on the knife edge and his status can change every time he plays. The fact there are so few 2800 club members show how hard it is to get there.

amazing stuff, to me the best game so far in candy 2014 .. such an unusual imbalance, so many deep lines, yet we arrive to "the proper" result - draw - but not out of boredom - just fair result of two brilliant players doing their best in a thrilling game (and yet - some would say the Russian/Petrov is boring by nature :) ) well i see how it would have been ground-breaking if either of them would have won - but not that day - both being sharp as razor and determined to win....

Great game to watch live, the eval bar telling everyone Hikaru ahead most of the game created amazing tensio.

Not only did Hikaru have an advantage throughout a large portion of this game, he obviously dropped some godly prep on Nepo, as he still had 1:30 when Nepo had 45 minutes left. The photo doesn't capture the true atmosphere there, Nepo was under serious pressure, he was lying his head face down on the table at times. And Naka must have been a bit disappointed in the end, with that much time advantage you know you have chances, even just due to time pressure alone. He lost his edge exactly after he played a4. Knight d to f3 would have still kept it.

yeah well, in the end I was at odds about that. Sure, it was not the recommended move, but it is endgame so kings and pawns should advance, but more, it was better than a3 because the rook could come out to play, as he was useless there. If the rook had remained stuck Nepo's queen could have made quick work of Nakas bishop and knight. I just couldn't and still can't see how this could be a draw by trading down. Seems the only way out for black in that position was a draw by perpetual, and so, all that makes blacks portion of being a 0.0 game, is that white is thus underdeveloped. If white could unwind, the advantage would be there. Perhaps, the engine line, if he hadn't played a4 could have black managing to snatch bishop or knight, still Nakas position was solid, everything was defended. On the one hand, a4 was a principled move, so kudos for that, on the other hand though, his blitz nature got the best of him, as he moved too soon, it seems.

After Re8, there is an incredible forced draw. It starts with Ne5 f6 Nxd7 Rxe1 Nxf6+ gxf6 Qxc7+ Kg6 Nf3(to stop Rg1#) Re2+ Kf1 Bxf3 and thats a forced draw regardless of whatever you play as white. Qxb8 will be met with Rf2+ where you have to repeat with Ke1, Re2+ and Kf1 as Kd1 leads to Nf2#. Other line is lets say you try to stop Rf1+ with Be3 sacrifice then Rxh2. You gotta run because of threat Rh1+ Bg1 and Rxg1# so Ke1 and Re2+ Kf1 is also a forced draw as Kd1 leads to Nf2+ where Bxf2 is forced and Re7+ wins the queen and black's up a full horse. If Bxf2 isnt played then Nd3+ followed by Rb2 is mate. A notorious line shown by Nepo in the press conference.

Another deep prep against Nepo's Petrov, which tends to happen when a player's opening repertoire becomes too predictable (anyone remember Fabi's game against MVL's Najdorf in the 2020 Candidates?). But kudos to Nepo for defending tenaciously to get a draw with Black on both occasions!

I would prefer to shake before sitting down, and would also imagine any pictures taken b4 sitting down have a lot more info, e.g. the stance too etc. Yest video moment of the Gukesh game indeed was something, indeed sometime you forget how young these players are and compliments to Gukesh for letting go in that moment, lying face down on the table as being yourself instead of composed (as long as you are not aggressive lol) i find rather braver and honest too. Better let go then than let it fester. As far as when speaking "waking up the smartphone", I always take that as a complement that I am speaking clearly and not mushing my words. As for the game its the one I followed most, yest, indeed it was interesting and exciting even if it was mostly book. I was rooting for Nepo ever since he faced Magnus two championships ago and although I still lament Magnus giving up, I think the difference between them is that they both know its a lot of work and preparation for the bout, Magnus doing it and bearing the increased cost which makes the reward look not so great in terms of cost/benefit ratio, while Nepo on the other hand would rather just play chess. Kudos to Magnus but yeah, if it hurts, you are doing it the wrong way. This game, I just couldn't see how Nepo could bring this game to a draw, other by forcing perpetuals. He is a pawn up but rook and bishop *and* knight against only a queen? Ok he has the extra pair of connected pawns while Naka has just the one pair and two stranded pawn, but both a capture away from joining the island in the middle. Still if there was a way to trade down this game I would love to see it as I cannot see how, thus I thought of it as a disadvantageous position for black in the sense that only way out is perpetuals for a draw while white still could win. I am probably wrong. I appreciate how they elected the time format. As people say (Fisher too) its theory and preparation. Preparation is a memory thing which most people including myself i think less of, than knowledge of theory and principles and being able to see your way through out of any position as far as it can take you. So 'no increment' in the first time span does bring out the chess thing more than the memory thing. As such such a format would favor Naka but then again to become good at fast you have to be good at slow first. If Nepo loses I hope he doesn't give up after three bouts for the crown and if Naka loses I hope he doesn't give up either as he is 3 years older than Nepo, wow didn't realize Nepo was younger. In any case it is disappointing to see players mess up two moves on after they reach their preparation limit as some commented happened to Praag about two-three games ago. Glad Alireza bounced back, everyone had him on a downward spiral. Its not over yet, he need more wins. Yeah ok he "cheated" his way in the candidates, but hey it is what it is, make the most of it, there are worst things people sacrifice to wear the fabled crown, i would guess, and it was not really cheating, at the end of the day. It was resolve and determination and not letting go of opportunities. PS: I've been watching some Gotham Chess. Much more "commercial", so I got to appreciate you more Agad. Stay the course ;)

This is because I think only 3 guys want to play against each other (nepo, HIKARU and fabi), the rest are babies. they'll support whoever wins among any of them. However, on a serious note, if nepo wins the candidate and loses the wcc to ding, can we just crown him the eternal 1.5 because unlike Paul keres, he did actually qualify for the WCC but lost 3 times.

#suggestion Can you add the time left for each player after a move is made, just for the Candidates tournament? Given the format of such a prestigious event, and players getting thrown off by some insane opening prep, it does look time becomes a sort of the 17th piece on the board and cannot be overlooked while viewing the game

The live reactions were so good. Nepo literally had his head on the table looking absolutely miserable for 50 minutes after the rook sac. Hikaru looked pretty in control until bxh3, but that left him stunned, confused, angry, and defeated for 15 minutes trying to figure out how to save the game. By far the most tense game of R7.

And the others (Pragg, Gukesh, Firouzja,...) are probably not in the top 5 worldwide - Ding is arguably also not a top 5 player at the moment - and the World Championship should be between the best of the best.

On the other hand, if the other players gets wiped off the board when Nepo rears his head in the candidates, they don't deserve more of a chance than him at playing ding for the title. The thing about having the best of the best as world champion is sadly something I think we can forget about. When the GOAT Magnus Carlsen refuses to play for the title, it kinda loses its true purpose. I'm sorry for whoever gets to bear the crown.

I don't understand this resignation. Nepo has two connected pawns on the f and g files. That will get rid of Hikaru's f pawn and his bishop. That leaves a rook and a knight, and the 4 stuck pawns. Using the Queen to push Hikaru's King into the hideyhole on the a file, Nepo's King can come across to assist the Queen which can then deliver checkmate by taking on b2. This all would take about 20 moves, using some zugzwang by Nepo to firstly force Naka's king into the corner, and then to force him to lose his Knight. I can't see how Naka would be able to stop this.

I think it’s safe to say that whoever wins the candidates will become the next champion. Ding is currently playing much worse than anyone in this tournament. It will be interesting to see what will happen if Ding doesn’t defend his title and the top two players of the candidates have to play.

Since you bring it up, I actually _despise_ chess players' handshakes. I'm a nerdy dude who watches chess recaps, but I'm still a dude, and I guess a little bit old fashioned. I get the spirit of competition, and that it's important to keep focus and maybe even to maintain an adversarial attitude, but before and after the game, if you can't be a gentleman, you shouldn't be showing your face in public. If I saw these guys look each other in the eyes, give a genuine smile, and a sturdy handshake, my level of respect for them would increase immensely.

Isnt it mandatory (common sense), if you move your pawn to g3 as white, in front of your king, to move your bishop to g2? Especially if your opponent has a light squared bishop staring at those squares? If Nakamura had done that, he wouldn't have to endure so much torture.
