I think my classmates and I broke a few teachers because we really didn't care if we got yelled at/shamed/assigned lines/etc. We were kids though, not adults or late teens lol. despite kubrick depicting the chaplain as a farce-worthy parody, he was the actual hero of the film...he the one who made it clear the impropriety of mind-meddling, the one who assumed Alex could change with proper treatment and one insider with the guts to speak up against the process that eliminated free choice. That he was made clownish is a tweek offered by Kubrick and his disdain for religion.

Except, as you said, he was the only one who understood the implications of what the government was doiing...so he WASN'T made clownish, he was shown to be perceptive and intelligent. He can hardly be blamed for the prisoners' cynicism and irreverence. I don't think Kubrick was mocking him at all.

The problem with the chaplain is that he didn't recognize the insincerity in Alex. Alex didn't have any true interest in becoming a good person. It was all an act.

It’s amazing how close the dialog is to the book. I’m reading the book now and the movie follows the book well, although I heard the ending is different, and in the book Alex kills the old lady with the Beethoven statue not the penis statue.
