It's the same wide load that Jaw Tooth filmed on Monday. A close call with a wide-load! NS 116 had to pull forward to let a coal train pass at the diamond. Filmed in Marion, Ohio

This is awesome! Never seen trains pass before in diamonds. The engineer did a good job letting the coal train pass. Love to see a loaded coal train, & lovely BNSF loco on the mixed manifest the engineer moved back of the crossing too how considerate! Those diamonds were busy that morning.The young child with his camera had a treat there on the diamonds Spike. 😊🤩👍

That was interesting! I have often wondered how they managed traffic at a diamond.

Hey, Ty, that BNSF unit look the little different. I don't think I've seen one like that before. And as for the new diamonds and look like they're having a little problem there too.

The diamonds are looking rough already. It does see a lot of traffic.

In South Carolina wide loads are short trains

Why the train made those maneuvers is anyone's guess. The load was nowhere near as substantial as any of those covered hoppers, a near perfect string of Gunderson 5188s until the two oddball Trinity's appeared at the end. argh! Anyway, I wouldn't say it's much of a wide load at all. The deck width on that particular heavy duty flatcar, known as an FD 32 (32 foot load deck) is 9 feet 3 inches. The cab width of the SD70ACe is 10 feet 3 inches. On typical double track there is a minimum 5 foot clearance between the frames of standard locomotives. Looking at the transformer, it clearly isn't much wider than the deck of the flatcar, and certainly no wider than the locomotive. Interesting catch, though. Cool video.

Movement of high and wides is governed by paperwork that dictates how fast they can go, and the conditions that allow them to go that speed at a given location. Some tracks they can't take them down, others they have to be at a certain speed when passing standing equipment, moving equipment or both. The crew and dispatcher follows that paperwork to a T

Lot's of action at the diamonds with the transformer NS coal trains!🛤🚂

You can imagine the mess and mayhem that would be caused by an out of gauge load snagging on a passing double stack container train. Not sure if this is still the practice, but they used to be classified as “special movements” if the load could become too close to an adjacent track.

I saw a NS train in alliance Ohio side swipe a wide load on the siding it was carrying extra large tires for like an earth mover. That was a couple years ago.

Great the engineer had the situation awareness to stop so there wouldn't be any possible compromise with clearances.
@glennfoster24233 күн бұрын
Dimension Loads move with restrictive information about "high" and/or "wide" locations where clearance is limited, either for 1. fixed objects like bridges or other structures above or beside the track, 2. Locations where two dimensional loads cannot pass on adjacent tracks, 3. And corbes where a load extending beyond the length of the railcar carrying the load may present a restriction. Woe to the crew)s) who fail to read the restriction to the "T".

interesting to see that one loco pulling all those coal cars, I thought each loco had a load rating to pull, I was shocked to see there were no DPUs on the end

yea one lone high horsepower motor can pull quite a bit... the problem comes in when that one lone motor takes a crap... now everythings dead in the water
