i hate seeing soo locos die. when i was a kid my dad pulled up alongside a parked soo loco in ladysmith wis. went and talked to the engineer , came back and got me. the engineer and conductor let us climb up into the cab and check it out. it was pretty epic for a pre teen kid. obviously i have a soft spot for soo.

Bittersweet video. I do remember dumping ballast and other such MoW assignments with these units when they were in our area of Milwaukee and Sturtevant Wisconsin. Also remember them working on locals in the area. Hate to see these units go as more and more of the GE garbage shows up. Have a great rest of your Monday.(Steve)

Most of these locomotives are so old that it was worth more as salvageable parts and scrap metal than to rebuild and return them to service, especially now with EPA Tier level emission requirements for older locomotives. That's why many of the wide-cab locomotives built in the 1980's to early 1990's from EMD and GE are now sitting in dead yards instead of mainline service, all replaced by Progress Rail/EMD SD70ACe/SD70ACe-T4 and GE/Wabtec ES44DC/ES44AC locomotives.

You can not save every engine just because it’s old and has a good history. With the latest emission controls and much better fuel consumption most newer engines even though more expensive to buy are cheeper to run than to rebuild old units. Just look at the latest rules California wants to implement. If that is done and other states follow we will see even some newer model engines hit the scrap yard. Don’t blame the new Canadian Pacific Kanas City railroad for ignoring preservation. They just rebuilt and ran one of their old steam engines as well as some older diesel covered wagons to celebrate the new merger.

@@johnchambers8528 the regulations are b.s. And rebuilds are very much a thing. We never need to build another GEVO if we just keep improving existing units. Can't tell me a few particles of emissions negate the energy/pollution costs of scrapping and recycling all that material. It isn't possible.

THE T&D RAILROAD WILL NOT SCRAP LOCOMOTIVES ( UNLESS ) THEY ARE ( TOTALLY DESTROYED ) IN A WRECK OR ( OBSOLETE ) AND CAN NOT SALE THEM .

I love trains as much as the next railfan, but I don't get all the hand wringing and somber mourning here. These are just common locomotives. Not super rare historical heritage items. Rail companies can't waste money on machines that don't make money for them. It's not a tragedy. It's simple corporate capitalism. The weak and feeble get scrapped, and the CEO's get richer. that's how business works.

But trash 9’s and AC4400’s are also weak and feeble yet failroads hold on to those pieces of junk.

These WILL become rare too. 2010 already a rare breed. Apathy like yours and the shareholders will leave us with nothing to show for these formerly "common" locos too.

What bother's me the most is that why can't railroads just restore, surely they can be reused again as backup power or something that isn't the cutter's torch. Like FUKING USE THEM INSTEAD OF SCRAPPING IF THEY STILL RUN!

Given that some of these are approaching 60 years old, it's entirely possible the frame itself is just done.

I hope I hear the railroad crying and wishing they had never scrapped those locos, It seems to me that the railroads are rushing to get rid of anything that don’t have epa emissions on it, fuck you epa!

The part I don't get, is that these locos meet emissions for the year they were built. So-- how can EPA, or anybody say that a 35 year old loco has to ALL OF A SUDDEN ,meet the present day emission rules????

Trains are the most environmentally friendly mode of transportation even with older locomotives yet the EPA screws with the railroads non stop. But that’s okay they have screwing with the auto industry too which is why you have these small turbo engines replacing naturally aspirated V6’s and V8’s. The federal government needs to be abolished. Waste of tax dollars pieces of crap!
