@@edruminfo Indeed you have. Yamaha have done well to gain you as an ambassador. The only problem is that there are very few or next to no DTX10’s in Australia. I’ve been looking to purchase one for about two weeks now, but trying to get my hands on one or even play one is looking to be a slim chance until mid next year?! Any comments there Simon? @@realmusic5407 It's a global problem I'm afraid - everybody is experiencing this at the moment. All the original batches of kits sold out almost instantly. I know (part of) the issue is getting gear shipped globally when there is no container space available for months. There is obviously a world wide shortage of semiconductors at the moment too, as well as general shortages of many specialised parts in all areas (cars, computers, and yes, electronic musical instruments), so manufacturing is not at a level that it should be, or was pre pandemic. It will get better, but not in the next few weeks I'm afraid. It's affecting everyone from Europe, USA, Asia and, obviously, Australia too. Sorry I can't be more helpful, but it will sort itself out. It is a massive PITA.

I do remember the DTXtreme11s. Your video is the first one to peak my interest in these kits. Great job! I have a TD-17KVX kit and imho, this Yamaha kit blows mine away sound wise. I just demoed a TD-50K2 kit and same result in comparing the sound with this kit. A bit of a fail regarding the cross-stick implementation on this kit compared to the TD-27 and TD-50x modules with the PD-140DS digital snare pad.
@edruminfo
@edruminfo 2 жыл бұрын
Good! I'm pleased it has. Regarding the cross stick - the PD140DS cost a similar amount to the DTXpro module by itself. I'd prefer to have a great sounding and reasonably priced kit, rather than increase the price of the kit by a significant amount just to play cross stick, but each to their own. I agree totally - sound wise - really good. Thanks for watching.

I`ve studied the manuals for the Pro & ProX modules back to back, and when it comes down to it, if you aren`t using the kit for Live performance and Bluetooth isn`t important to you, all you are really losing on the Pro is a little extra velocity layering on the cymbals & hats + 3 delay & 3 overdrive effects. The same 400 sounds and oh yes, 10 less kit constructions. These modules are excellent value for the money and in my opinion, their set up is far better than competitors because you can take all the studio dry recorded kits and make them anything you want. It`s time for me to upgrade.

Really great insights to all the features here. One thing i've wondered, is there any reason why the kick pad is mesh only and not TCS? Thanks for the deep dive!
@edruminfo
@edruminfo 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, because when you play over the surface of a drum, playing at different angles on different hits (as we all naturally do) feels different for every hit. When you are playing a bass drum pedal, the beater is only hitting on point so as long as that one point feels good it doesn't matter what material it is. TCS didn't offer any advantages when just hit in one place, so (much cheaper) mesh was chosen.

I`ve been drumming for 44 years now and actualy owned the first TAMA electronic kit. It`s been interesting watching the evolution of electronic drumming. I`m liking where Yamaha is headed with these kits. The Pro`s: 1] The pricing is more reasonable by far than Roland. 2] The rack sytem is the way to go because if you take your time, you can hide the wires more effectively. Visible wiring is a negative for sales. The hex rack also looks cool. Remember: drummers like to sound great but they also want to look cool. Keep that in mind when you design a kit. Ignoring that hurt the electronic drum market for years. 3] The ability to import sounds and do multi sampling in order to make the sounds non repetitive and more natural sounding is genius. Keep going with that. If you offered multi layer sample packs for download and even if you charged for it, guys would buy it once they understood the advantages of it. You have an edge on your competition with this feature. 4] The DTX10 module looks very user friendly. 5] The new silicone heads seem like a good move, allowing for better positional sensing. 6] Hiring Simon to explain the nuances of these kits with reference points on the video and his ability to explain technical concepts easily is huge. Great work Simon! 7] Offering studio recorded samples in their natural state and allowing the user to add FX, compression, ambience is brilliant. That`s a huge selling point. Here are my suggestions for Yamaha`s next incarnation: 1] make a larger kick drum, maybe an 18" at least to balance out the asthetic of the kit. 2] Offer more appealing finishes like GEWA is doing. 2] Make the cymbals a little funkyier looking and edgy. A little more golden colour would be nice if possible. 3] Work towards offering a Digital snare like Roland. I think thats the wave of the future for electronic drumming. 4] A bigger coloured screen on your module is a good idea. Guys don`t like tiny gray screens. 5] Make your drums look more like real drums [still shallow like the TAYE Go Kit] with mesh bottom heads to facilitate air flow. That`s my two cents worth. Having said all that, I don`t need another electronic kit but if Yamaha made some or all of those improvements, I would be buying a new kit. They would be irresistable. I say all this because I believe Yamaha has the most potential to corner the electronic drum market. Roland has gotten cocky and have gone crazy in their pricing. Yamaha has the best shot of taking them down.

@@edruminfo thanks! I took the time to write because I’ve seen you are very responsive to your forum. My hope is that Yamaha will also take the time to check their feedback, especially your channel because nobody does a better job explaining these kits. I’ve watched a lot of the others and your level of detail is unmatched. I believe that whichever company takes drummer feedback the most seriously and addresses the common themes will become the king of the market. Yamaha certainly have the resources to make it happen as they’re a massive company and are already known for their high quality. Keep up the good work Simon because people are definitely listening and are making purchases based on your information.

Great info thanks. Just a couple of questions: 1. Can you move the module to the left or between hihat and snare? 2. What are cymbal rolls like on these kits? Thanks
@edruminfo
@edruminfo 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks Phil. Yes you can mount the module to the left. There no rack there to put it on, but the module holder fits into the base section of any Yamaha cymbal stand so you can put it where you want it. You'll have to re mark-up the cable loom with new names (or remember where each one goes), but thats easy. As for cymbal rolls... kzbin.info/www/bejne/eISte4B3jqhsi8k

Nice detailed and professional presentation! Could you please tell me if the 80's UK Gated kit of DTX PROX is also available on DTX PRO? If not,it may be possible to obtain the same sound of the 80's UK Gated kit using the samples and sound effects of DTX PRO? What are the differences between DTX PROX and DTX PRO regarding the quality of samples (the number of layers per sample) and the trigger settings?
@edruminfo
@edruminfo 2 жыл бұрын
Thank you. The 80's UK Gated Kit isn't on the DTXPRO as a preset... but everything you need to make it is! That kit is just a combination of the right samples, and the right effects, and you will be able to get within a few % of the same sound. As far as the quality, there are more layers in the cymbal samples on the PROX (and a few more samples) but apart from that you can get both modules sounding very similar. The PRO only has the one trigger patch, whereas the PROX has 10.

Hi Simon, thank you very much for this very helpful video! As I read in the comments you've played both, mesh and TCS pads, can you tell me wich are physically louder? Asking for my neighbour.
@edruminfo
@edruminfo 2 жыл бұрын
Hi. It is noise or vibration that is the issue? If its noise, then the TCS has a lower pitch and a lower noise (the mesh is louder and higher pitched so that it sounds even louder). But if it is vibration then there is not much in it - both pads are converting your hit into vibrational energy. Ask the neighbour (if you are talking!) if it is high pitch noise or low pitch noise they can hear. If it is high pitch then it is volume that is the issue, but if it is low pitch then is more vibration (probably, but not always). Sorry I cant be more precise.

I Simon, I must thank you again for your work with Yamaha, which is particularly useful to us. I plan to work with DTX8K (still hesitate between X or M) at home and on stage; in that last case, if possible, I want to take my real bass drum (for a better look 🙂). is there room for a 22 BD with the rack and what is the best trigging solution ? is the DT50K sufficient and reliable. in addition, I noted that you play mostly on mesh pads. why not TCS pads ? I live in an apartment and my music room is just acoustically treated. Are TCS heads really quieter ?
@edruminfo
@edruminfo 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jaques. Thanks for getting in touch, and thanks for your kind comments. The DTX8 rack has room for a 22" bass drum. You will have to move the bottom horizontal bar up, but there is easily enough room. The DT50K is perfect. I would use a real head, or if volume is an issue, use a mesh head with the drum half full of heavy pillows to give the correct feel. I only play whatever Yamaha have got the most of. As I am one of their demonstrators, 'my' kit is whatever they have. At the moment I have a DTX8KM here in Black Forest, but before I had a DTX10KM in Real Wood. It just depends on what they have, what I am doing, and what is available globally. There is no reason why it has been mesh kits recently, it just has! I prefer TCS as I feel I can 'lay into' the pads more - I find mesh unrealistically bouncy - but I take what I can! I hope that helps. Simon

Hi Simon, i have a question about the dtx pro: how can i disable sending midi cc? Our Keyboarder Changes my Kits via usb midi, but when i touch the wheel of the DTX the Keyboarder get‘s in Trouble with mainstage…Kind Regards
@edruminfo
@edruminfo 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Alexander. Ok, well if this were me, I'd say it was his problem to sort out! MainStage can filter midi data coming in, so he may be able to use that to remove the program change date. If he can't, then there is another way - First, unplug the USB cable you are using to connect the module to the Mac. Second, use a USB to MIDI cable from the computer running MainStage and only plug in the MIDI IN socket in the back of the module. That way NO midi program change (MPC) data can be sent back to the computer at all as there is nothing connecting the midi out to the computer. However, this doesn't work if you need to send midi data to him, but I'm guessing you don't if you are using MainStage to change kits for you. Would that work for you?.

Hi Guilherme. Just a damp cloth and a little bit of detergent if it is actually dirty (grey) but most of the time, just a damp cloth should get rid of the worst. Anything apart from water could dry out the top layer so I would only use detergent if really neccesary.

Thank you. There is no delay from loading the samples between kits, but there is a delay in the effects - they have to stop, new settings are loaded, and the new sounds applied to them. So, the change in effects takes less than a second (approximately). There is no memory card - the user samples are loaded into flash memory inside the module - the internal sounds are already loaded , and play straight back from memory. So for user samples, the Pro has 64meg and the ProX has 128meg.

@@edruminfo Thanks for your answer. So you are saying that the load time between sample songs would be seconds? I'm very surprised at the limited size of the memory. 128MB is nothing these days. Some kits have 16GB as you know. Do you know how many more cymbals/drums I can add on to the kit? I'd be looking to add another drum and maybe two more cymbals. The reason why I'm asking is because I have a DTX II which is past it's sell by date and I'm looking to purchase a DTX10K-M. It's a lot of money, so I want to make sure I get value for money.

@@OYMInternetRadio Thats because these module work in a different way to other modules. If you just want to load in samples, then get a 2box or a Mimic, but these are MUCH more powerful and allow you to use the internal sounds and tweak them to get the sound you need - want it to sound like a '72 Gretsch? Start with the jazz toms and kick and go from there. Sound like a 1960s Ludwig? Start with the Vintage toms and kick and go from there. The effects in these are crazy, but you do need to know what you are doing to get the best from them. Most people will just use the presets ands tweak the Kit Modifiers, but there is a LOT more to these than that.

Hi Simon. Just got the DTXprok8-m. Things I like about it and some that I don't. It's frustrating that you can't mix each kit individually. It basically means you are stuck with one kit for a live performance and even at home when you change kit I find you have to remix the drum kit because of the differences between kits. Are there any recommended kits/sample you suggest importing in. I own SSD4 and also studio drummer, but I'm not sure if they are actually wave file samples.
@edruminfo
@edruminfo 2 жыл бұрын
Yes you can mix each kit differently. It would be fairly pointless if you couldn't. Go to Menu, Kit Edit, Volume. The top line is the whole kit volume. Second line is each pad volume (hit the pad to select it). Third line is each zone of each pad volume (hit the pad zone to select it). You can't get much more detailed in the volume tweaking than that. So once every kit it mixed to your liking, you can use the LED faders on the front (in Mixer mode) to make global changes for live, home etc. As far as samples to import, whwatever sounds good to you. I use ezDrummer2 and Superior 3 mainly because they sound good to my ears. Others might prefer Slate or GGD, but there is no right or wrong.

Hi. No it doesn't. Obviously you can load brush hits in a samples (and I did recently just to test something) but there is no "Brush Kit' in with module. The fact that you can only use nylon brushes with mesh heads, rather than wire brushes, prevents many serious brush users from using electronics, when an acoustic kit with brushes is more realistic and can be kept quiet. Hi Luis. Yes they are compatible. However, as all the inputs on the DTX700 module are 3 zone inputs, you will have to use a splitter cable and have the new pad going into 2 separate trigger inputs - one for the head, and one for the rim. This is because the new pads are piezo/piezo rather than piezo switch like the ones on your kit.

@edruminfo 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Tav. I'm going to (almost) cut and paste an answer I left for someone earlier today as it covers exactly the same issue. Here you go... You cant just plug your existing pads into the new module and have the same functionality. The new modules are a change of direction because you cant make pads with real shells and steel hoops into 3 zone pads. The snare channel and input 14 on both new modules can work with your existing 3 zone XP pads, but the toms are piezo/piezo inputs rather than 3 zone (piezo/switch/switch) so your existing XP pads would only have a working head - not the rims. If you want to keep all the 3 zone pad ability from your existing kit, but add the better sounds and control of the ProX then your best bet would be to get one of the new modules and MIDI the 900 to the new module (MIDI out on the 900 to MIDI in on the ProX). Then mute the heads and rim 1 of each pad on the 900 (plus the cymbals and hi hat) and send the audio from rim 2 from each pad from the 900 to the Aux In of the new module. Then you can play your existing pads, still have rim 2 on each pad, AND have the drum and cymbal sounds from the new module.

Please could you explain certain pad inputs on the module being labelled as two inputs in one socket? This must be to add extra pads I guess. Does this mean using a twin cable with, at the module end, a stereo plug going into the stereo socket on the module, then dividing at the other end with two mono plus into two separate pads? But the pads are 2-zone I gather, so not sure how that works with mono signal.

@edruminfo
@edruminfo 2 жыл бұрын
Hi, yes that is what the 8 individual outpour are for. You can decide which instrument goes down each output inside the module. each output can be a stereo output or 2 mono outputs, so you can send instruments as 4 stereo pairs, OR you can use a splitter cable and have each instrument coming down one of 8 mono cables (which is exactly how it would be if you were recording an acoustic drum kit with a single microphone - bass drum through 1, snare through another etc).

@@edruminfo Thanks a lot for that detailed explanation, much appreciated. Hi. Yes you can, but I would do it a slightly different way. I would plug your tom 4 into the bass drum (or use a splitter in the back of the module for convenience) and I would plug the cymbal pad into input 14. In this way, you can have a full 3 zone cymbal pad (bell, bow and edge and choke), as 14 is a 3 zone input, and have tom 4 as a mono pad. It won't take long to swap them over and a minute per kit to swap the sounds, but it would be a much better option for playability.

Hi Mehdi. Yes, of course you can and easily too. Select the kit you want. Go to Menu, then Voice. Press Enter. Scroll down and select the voice you want for your loud back beat (open rimshot in your case). Scroll down a couple of pages until you see VelLo (Velocity Low). This is the level at which the loud sound will kick in, so try turning this to 80 (you can always change it later). Now you have set the loud snare sound to play between 80 and 127 (max volume). Then press F3 (TRG - right hand button under screen), press F1 (Layer) so the module changes to Layer B, and press F2 (Pad Lock) so the module stays on Layer B). Press Exit. Change VelHi (Velocity High) to 79 - you have now set the ghost note layer to only play up yo velocity 79. After that, the loud layer will take over. Scroll up a couple of pages and you will see that Voice Number says 0:[No Assign]. Change it to select the voice you want for your ghost note. Press F3 (TRG) and press F2 to turn off the Pad Lock. Now when you play up to a velocity of 79, you'll get one sound, and 80 or higher you'll get your loud sound. It looks complicated but when you know how to do it, it takes about 1 minute or less. You can change the point at which the sound changes from low to high by changing the VelLo on the loud sound, and VelHi on the ghost note. Just make sure you change both of them, but you can leave both on so you have 2 snare sounds if you want. Its all down to you. I hope that helps.

You are asking the wrong person! I was involved in the development of the DTX8 so I know it very well. From a sound point of view, I think the DTX8 is MUCH more powerful, and much more realistic sounding in a mix. This is mostly down to the fact that the Yamaha uses samples (digital recordings of real drums), whereas the Roland uses modelling (composite sounds put together from various individual parts of drum and cymbal sounds). I have never met a person who bought a Roland kit for the sonic realism. However, you are the only person who knows what you want. Go and try them both and make up your own mind. Don't be persuaded by anyone (including me), especially if they are trying to get a sale from you (such as any video, music store staff, sales rep etc). Good luck.

@@FunkMauzz Ah, I see what you mean. No, only the MIDI notes which are assigned to pads or pad inputs can be accessed via MIDI, and have samples assigned to them. The other notes cannot be used or have samples assigned to them. That was a particular trick which most people were unaware that the DTXT3 and DTX900 could do. You CAN do it with the DTXM12 though.

Question about the PCY155 ride cymbal on the DTX8..Sometimes I hit the edge and it's dead, no feedback, other spots on the edge trigger properly. Is there a way to adjust this or could it be a defective trigger?

Yes, Input 14 is a 3 zone input as is not used as standard so will take another 3 zone cymbal pad. You can add another tom into the shared input of the kick pad (or tom 1, 2, or 3). So, yes, you can.

Excellent video. I'd be interested in your opinion on how the DTX 10X compares with the ATV Artist series with an AD5 module, particularly for an acoustic drummer who wants 1 great-sounding raw acoustic kit and nothing else. I purchased an artist kit a couple of years ago and have regretted it since. It's woefully under-developed, none of the expansion modules that were supposed to come out ever materialised and the module is lacking when it comes to connectivity on stage. I hate the cable snake, the fact that the toms are single-zone and the user interface. Probably my most regretted music gear purchase, I can't wait to get rid of it. Do you a think a DTX10X would be a good choice for its long overdue replacement?
@edruminfo
@edruminfo 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ashley. Thanks for getting in touch. I've got to say, I love the aD5 - I have one - but as you say, it lost its way and hasn't been developed since, and it is woefully lacking in editing and expansion. I think the DTX ProX would be a perfect module, although it will do much more than you need! If I were you, I would sell the ATV cymbals and the module, keep the drums (as they will work perfectly with the ProX) and just buy the ProX module and the Yamaha cymbal pads (as the ATV cymbals will not work with the new modules). I think you'll probably get a good price for the gear you were selling, which should cover a good percentage of what you need to buy. Sounds like a win/win to me.

@@edruminfo Thanks for your reply. One aspect of the DTX10 that really interested me was the fact that you can now get TCS heads on real wood shells. I had a DTX750K years ago and I absolutely loved the feel of it. I only got rid of it because it was starting to sound quite dated and it looked like an electronic drum kit on stage, whereas I prefer an acoustic look and feel. Do you know if it's possible to buy just the TCS heads and triggers to fit the ATV shells as the sizes are obviously similar? I couldn't find them through a quick search but I may not be looking hard enough. It's a shame Yamaha don't sell these kits as a package without the hex rack. I have a Gibraltar rack that I'll keep. I never really use any of the module editing features once I have everything setup, as I'm totally blind and can't see the screen. That was one of the features of the AD5 that actually appealed to me. It's a real shame no drum manufacturers have been open to the idea of implementing accessibility into their modules, even just primitive speech support. I tend to get a kit sounding how I want and just leave it at that, but I would love to have the option to delve in a bit more if they were open to making the modules more accessible. I'm a software dev and if I had the source code to the firmware I'd do it myself, but that isn't going to happen any time soon.

Ashley Cox The 2 Box Drumit 3 and 5 mark 2 modules may be good for you. You can load any drum kit from any VST or record and play your own acoustic kit. With 2 Box modules you have adjustments over tuning, volume and decay for very realistic acoustic sounds. You can keep your ATV drum pads and cymbals and even use Yamaha pads and cymbals if you want. There are up to 8 outputs for live use. The 2 Box operating system is very open and I think it would be easy to write speech detection into this simple system. I hope this helps you think about 2 Box as the module for your needs.

Hi SImon and thanks a lot for your useful work. even though I appreciated the work of yamaha on these electronic drums (realistic sounds, ease of use, realistic rooms, and these amazing TCS surfaces) some details shock me (especially at this price):The outputs on the pro x module are not balanced and this is,for me, an error for a module of this price and intended for live stage; it would have been better to put individual mono balanced outputs . Moreover, I understood that the samples (on a zone) can be set into ABCD parts (which can be alternated) of 10 layers each. are these 4 alternating zones really enough to definitively make disappear this "machine gun" effect on single stroke rolls. @edruminfo 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Jacques, thanks for the kind words. While I understand where you are coming from regarding balanced/unbalanced outputs, as live situations would require the individual outputs rather that the master outputs I had a look at the direct/individual outputs on a random load of other modules which are out there. The direct outputs are unbalanced on the GEWA G9, TD30, TD20, TD27, TM6, SPDSX, Pearl eMerge and Alesis Strike. In fact, the only modules with balanced direct outputs for live use are the Pearl Mimic and the TD50. So, on stage, as long as good quality DI boxes are close to the PROX module, and good quality shielded cables are used, there will be little opportunity for noise to get into the signal path. Having unbalanced individual outputs allows the module to be smaller (less sockets), cheaper (less sockets) and with the internal shielding and high build quality, noise should be less of an issue anyway. I understand that in a perfect world, everything would be balanced, but also in a perfect world, we wouldn't have MP3 format files, mini jacks and phone speakers, or any of the many other things that do not help good audio quality. As far as the 4 layers, they are there only to allow samples to alternate each hit, as the chance of hitting exactly the same velocity on five consecutive hits is pretty small. If you haven't seen it, I explain it here kzbin.info/www/bejne/qoaUgZptg8hjipY As far as the quality, you tell me, how does the snares off sample sound here kzbin.info/www/bejne/qoaUgZptg8hjipY ? I think it sounds pretty good, and that is in a solo situation, which drummers rarely play in, unless at home. In a situation with music, then I don't think many will tell its not acoustic, as long as they cant see the kit(!) and then they might guess. Regarding videos for loading multi layer samples into the modules, yes, there are official ones on the way. Thanks for your comments, Simon

More than you would think. They normally 'disguise' them as acoustic kits (using triggers on mesh or normal heads, or with embedded pads in drum shells), but yes. If you check out The Who on their last tour (with the orchestra) I did the programming for Zak Starkey. He's using a DW shell kit with Roland pads built into them, triggering Toontrack Superior Drummer 3. Sounded great. Have a look at Coldplay, Kylie Minogue, U2, and many, many others.
