A Coastal Home with a Mid-Century Modern Interior Design (House Tour)

A coastal home with a garden that punctuates its curves and amplifies its impact, Cove House was designed in 1969 by architect Ruben Lane and finished in 1973. Sitting resplendent on the Cronulla coastline and deserving of grounds equally as impressive, the residents of this coastal home briefed Secret Gardens to make bold choices and think outside the square.
With great respect for the existing design, curves and angles from the exterior of the house, as well as the interior, have been repeated. Large white curves of the coastal home are duplicated in the garden, with white concrete circles set in contrast to the fresh, green lawn. Cacti and round stepping stones draw you in from the street and over a bridge with a koi pond below.
On the sloping, northern side of the house, a courtyard looks out across the water and curved seating encompasses a built-in barbecue. Also overlooking the water is the swimming pool with a glass walled end and thoughtfully curved glass fencing. Considered and original garden design to rival the magnificent water views, this coastal home is elevated from incredible to iconic.
The result sees one of Sydney’s most amazing homes now accompanied by a suitably provocative garden, it is clear that Secret Gardens has achieved making this coastal and iconic home an even more celebrated destination.

Love Mid-Century modern homes. So much timeless beauty in these homes. When I was looking for my own home, I was only interested in mid-century modern and modern homes nothing else. Why - whether it was built in 1960s or 2000s, I wanted to come home from work and feel like I was always on vacation. Truely timeless beautiful homes.

True fantasy design. That house, tastefully updated yet it retains the original feel. The textured interior walls just evoke the childhood memories of these magnificent buildings. Then the lush, rich garden planting and the bold, more geometric shapes encasing the building and pouring through it. Marvellous

All the curves brought me back to my hometown Brasilia, where Oscar Niemeyer had a blank slate and showcased his artistry, though much was done is concrete. The gardens of this house reminds of the many routes " tesourinhas" of Brasilia traffic lanes. Fantastic job!

I'm from Sydney but haven't spent much time in this area. I didn't know this house existed. It's a friggin' masterpiece. I love the landscaping....except for the rigidity of the descending grass circles leading down to the fire pit....to me, they don't flow or don't seem inviting. Overall though I'm in awe of the design and the class of the owners' restoration and detailing.

Brazilian design genius Burle Marx would have been a great reference point to help inspire landscape elements (built and natural) that compliment the house design and the Brazilian modernist style. I don't think the pure circle shapes work well with the organic ovoids and asymmetrical architecture. Just my opinion. The rest of the project is very successful.

The audio in this video is really jarring, i'm not sure why the background noise keeps being cut out but it sounds horrible, just leave the background ambient noise! And yes beautiful home, stunning. The amount of money here makes me a bit sick but at least its being used to make something beautiful. Let's hope the owners are good people and are contributing to the world, not just oil or coal magnates.

No. If it is curved it should be curved (glass), not a rectangular low polygonal curve. This is forced shaping.
