Nice little astrophytum collection! Used to have a few of these. My huge ornatum I lost a long time ago of root rot, it was about 18 inches tall, a real nice one. The rest I lost in the greenhouse freeze a few years back. I just bought 4 myriostigmas last summer. Well bought 3 got one free. One is a mutation with some bumps growing in between the margins. They are still small, about one and a half to two inches across. About the size of the two plants Daz gave you, which by the way are AWESOME!!! Would like to get a few more varieties again. All in good time😊 From Morris park in the Ozarks to across the Emerald isle have a good evening guys!!!!!

Tragic to lose an Astrophytum at that size, (18 inches). Ultra slow growers these, must have been decades old.
@morrisparkintheozarks68314 жыл бұрын
@@demonhalo67 yes , especially the huge ornatum. The others the freeze got when my stove malfunctioned and it dropped to 20°F ! Many cacti & euphorbias survived cause I keep them dry over the winter, but the astros did not. Yes quite a loss. From Morris park in the Ozarks have a great day!!

Astrophytums are very nice plants. The bishops cap cactus the absolute favourite from this group becouse of their "plump" form and showy yellow radiant flowers around mid Spring. This year, given the appalling late winter storms, and (so far), early spring rainfall:- no buds have even started to yet form on my Astrophytums at all. Only two cacti have so far produced any spring buds:- my trusty Stenocactus Multicostatus, (the first one for a seventh year in a row,) and my Mammilaria Backebergiana. Both rather mature plants. I'm certain my lack of Spring buds is down to the lack of sunshine, which at this time of year in England has been well down compared to recent years.

So happy you love Astrophytums so much too, they really are so incredible :-D yes the Winter has been so awful for us and so much rain and grey heavy cloud cover and storms every weekend, there is another storm forecast for tomorrow too, its been horrible, so looking forward to spring and lets hope we get a real summer this year too after this endless wet and rain, the lack of sunshine really does affect the bud production, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle for a wonderful Wednesday XXXXX

Thanks Lyn, I adore your Astro collection 😻 Just about my favourite cactus genus. I definitely agree that the A asterias and its hybrids can be tricky. I’ve lost several for no obvious reason: they just collapsed suddenly. My seed grown babies appear to be toughened to my conditions, but they are still very young ( the oldest are coming up 2 years), so the jury’s still out on them! It’s definitely wise to keep yours in the warm, as they are more tender than the other Astro species. I’m a bit of a sucker for the unusual Japanese hybrids tbh!

Fantastic video Lyn, so many things ive learnt watching your Chanel :) . had to do a few rescues this winter and so far looking good. the only one thing im dreading is i need to separate 4 different ones whats out grown its zinc pot and put them all in there own pots but very unsure how to even get them out and separate without damaging them. any ideas i be grateful as i want to get them in new pots and plenty time before they get first water after winter :)
@desertplantsofavalon4 жыл бұрын
So happy you enjoyed the video Stephen, and thats wonderful that you have had success with your rescues, I am in the same boat too LOL! as I have a bowl with two Mammillaria,s and Agaves and a few other mixed cacti that are totally cramped together in the same bowl and desperate for a repot, and I am going to re pot them into their own pots and when I do I will film a video showing the whole process as I will have to very gently separate the roots and the plants so they dont get damaged, but I wont be re potting for another month, but if you can wait then I will show the whole process and hopefully this will help you too when you separate yours to re pot, thanks so much for your wonderful comment and for watching and sending you an abundance of love and happiness and PLANT POWER from across the Emerald Isle for a wonderful Wednesday XXXXX
@stevekenilworth4 жыл бұрын
@@desertplantsofavalon Thank you Lyn for your reply. currently all the cactus in the metal container still look pretty full of water and have not watered them since end of summer so im sure they wont need watering for a while yet. wondering is it best to have wet soil or bone dry when separating them. the only thing i can think of when removing them is use some tin cutting snipers on both sides then bend it apart so then i should be easy to remove but separating is a whole new thing so i will wait till you post a vid of doing it. had them years so want to do it with the least damage as possible . looking forwards to your video. thanks again lyn, PLANT POWER

Hi Paul, there can be many reasons why your cactus has turned yellow, and can be down to the roots or and the soil, the water and or soil pH, bugs on roots or plant, under or over potted, not enough or too much light, not enough fertilising, or root rot etc, but I am planning on making a video very soon all about Chlorosis ( yellowing of Cacti ) and the many reasons on why this can happen and what you can do to prevent and to treat it, and hopefully it will help you, thanks so much for watching and stay tuned for the future video in the next week or two, XXXX
