Күн бұрын

"A whistleblower at the University of North Carolina has revealed a typo-riddled, 146-word term paper that earned a football player an A- in a bogus course meant to boost his GPA and keep him eligible.
The single-paragraph report on Rosa Parks was revealed in an ESPN interview with Mary Willingham, a campus tutor who spent a decade working with UNC athletes and who has taken the lead in speaking out about how the school allegedly jipped jocks out of a quality education.
In the segment, Willingham and former Tar Heel gridder Deunta Williams explained how athletes at the school were urged to take scam "paper classes," listed in course books as independent studies classes in departments such as African American Studies."* Cenk Uygur, Ben Mankiewicz (What The Flick?!), Dave Rubin (Rubin Report) and Wes Clark Jr break it down on The Young Turks.

Matthew Roy It doesn't matter if a kindergartener is writing it; the expectations for that and any paper are clear and correct usage of writing/conventions, accurate research and sources, and thought-out additions to the material. This paper fails to meet any of those expectations.

Batman MLA format is double spaced, with 0" spacing on both right and left sides, also, there needs to be a header with your last name and page number. Also, compared to like Chicago style or something MLA has a very basic in-text citation system (you literally only use the last name of the author of the source you're using) So yeah, generally in composition classes you use MLA format, but regardless, this guys paper isn't formatted in any style that I can tell.

Yeah people at my school have trouble reading. It's crazy, but it's such a huge issue that the teachers feel bad. But the problem is with technology, it has became a bigger issue. 60 yrs ago people didn't have electronics to mess around with, and the only thing they could of is just no pay attention. Drugs could also be a factor, as kids are getting into more and more hard drugs. There are many factors that play in, but it's serious trouble now. Kids are getting too lazy, and don't care about what's ahead of them anymore.

Dannyx7802 Technology took away physical contact from these kids too. In my algebra class two girls were texting each other even though they were 8 feet apart from each other and they were in the same classroom together. It's their loss though and the youth nowadays almost never think at all. America is a half-assed country now.

My high school soccer coach would check everyone's grades daily, I don't even know if he was technically allowed to do that. He made people run for getting anything below a B. I actually really liked him though, athletes should be held to the same standards as everyone else, they aren't special.

I don't even understand why college athletes that generate income for the school are even taking classes. They obviously are not there to get an education when their first priority is sports. She was quite christian as well which doesn't help me BUT sticking entirely to the facts I will break down a conversation that sums up the professor very quickly. Alright class I want you to right a paper on a subject that is controversial. But don't do any research on it, I want it to be composed entirely of peoples opinions! Me: "...But research is the foundation of a proper argument, if you just want us to devise a paper that's fabricated from imagination are you saying I could turn in a paper stating 9/10 doctors agree that smoking camel's will help you live longer?" Of course not don't be ridiculous! Now just write about something controversial- Oh and because this is Humboldt I don't want to see *any* papers about marijuana. If you turn one in I will hand it back to you instantly with an F on it. Me: "...Well I may not like marijuana myself but it does hold quite a bit of controversy in it, I mean alcohols are far more dangerous and they're legal..." NO POT PAPERS Me: "Fine fine... How about a paper on gay marriage?" No, I don't want any papers that will cause people to become emotionally upset. Me: "So let me get this straight, you want us to do a research paper... without doing research... about something controversial... that can't offend anyone... Look I know you're a woman and have an oversized corpus callosum but this is just ridiculous" I WON'T HAVE SEXIST COMMENTS IN MY CLASS ROOM Me: "It's not sexist, it's a scientific *fact*... Maybe if you did research instead of relying on opinions you'd know that..."

I will admit i argued my point poorly. Where I grew up (Germany) athletics, and academics were kept mostly separate. PE was there, because it is important to keep the body moving as well as the mind. However, team sports were provided outside the school system where parents enrolled kids who showed signs of athletic ability. If they did well they would receive a secondary school diploma and go train for the major leagues. I just find it strange that higher learning and sports are so integrated in the US. In conclusion I feel that the overly strong link between sports and academia undermine both in their own way.

***** STFU. TRY DOING WHAT ATHLETES DO. They THROW A BALL IN A GLOVE WITH 160 KPH. THEY RUN 90 MINUTES WITH THEIR BODY AT RISK. While using all techniques to win a game. They train every fucking day while they take all the pain and hold it for themself. they dont eat what they like cause they must not. And that's just a part of being an athlete.
@ivogreci8607
@ivogreci8607 9 жыл бұрын
Art Andrew The issue here, Art, is not about "what athletes do" or any of us trying to "do it" ; it's about preferential treatment and the high grades that many athletes obtain undeservedly. Other students have to work hard for their grades. Athletes, in some cases, apparently don't; they can "train every fucking day, take all the pain, and be on a diet". BUT THATS NOT WHAT SCHOOLS ARE ABOUT, schools are about studying hard and learning philosophy, medicine, psychology, science , reading and writing - NOT HOW TO THROW A FOOTBALL. Universities have a lengthy history and (should) have an equally great legacy. They are centers of higher learning , not "playing games" (at least they weren't for many hundreds of years). The guys who lack the intelligence to pass tests on their own simply should not be in school no matter how hard they train to throw a ball around and push their opponents out of the way.This is not "education"- it's an obsession with "games" and that shouldn't be thereason for anyone to go to school-especially if he can't pass a test on his own no matter what the reason.
@DremAndrew1
@DremAndrew1 9 жыл бұрын
That's true man. But it's not like they go to schools to study. they just take their chances to be found and gain experience in the Game they are interested in. Of course the Teachers let people pass their class are not good teachers but not all athletes are like that. Their coaches say to them to study or they will not play in the team. For example in some germany football teams they wont take you in their team if you are not good in school. Even if you are the best player in the world in your age.
@Mareepu

So despite the fact that my brother and my sister's schools are low-income and largely minority-based in student body (nothing wrong with that, since we are both), the schools are also quite rigorous, and Massachusetts often has really high standards (often impossible standards, actually, as we have a big problem with the mental health of our students). On Black History Month, Rosa Parks is pretty much talked about on the second day-the first day, of course, is left for Martin Luther King Jr. So my 10-year-old sister, in the midst of fifth-grade, writes a one-page essay in 45 minutes-and receives a B-. She's a very succinct writer and her handwriting is... well, terrible, but she's careful, doesn't make spelling mistakes, and focuses on clear speech. In comparison to this, her essay on Rosa Parks would be the Odyssey. My 8-year-old brother, in the midst of second-grade in a separate day-school for _special needs children_ (he has an emotional disability, rather than learning), who are often (unfortunately) given lower standards, had to write a paragraph based on Rosa Parks, with a worksheet to help. He's being assisted by this worksheet, but is otherwise left to his devices, and he needs extended time to finish writing. He writes about a paragraph, as long as this paper shown on the story, and while his language is also really simplistic, it's _also_ clear (... and his handwriting is beautiful, so he's got that going for him over my sister, lol), and he still has time to write about the significance of Rosa Parks refusing to give up her seat. So if this is a real thing (because I'm honestly on the fence about that), then I really don't know what to tell ya. I know some people are bad at writing, and that's okay-but your degree should mean you can write better than a fifth-grader, or a _second-grader in a modified school program_.

jason666king I really don't care what the nature of the course was, there are teachers who will dock points for grammatical mistakes, especially ones so easy, a child in elementary school would know that it's improper grammar. Something as simple as a misplaced comma can completely change the meaning of the sentence to something you do not intend. A common example brought up is the Oxford comma. Some argue it's not needed, some do, and some argue that it is situation.

Why do university athletics even exist?
@staryberrygin
@staryberrygin 10 жыл бұрын
At one point it was just a fun way for different schools to compete against one another for prestige and bragging rights, and teams were made up of actual students whose main focus was an education first. It was a way for students to represent their school and stick it to that other school. Then at some point egos were bruised, and money happened.

Doesn't surprise me at all living in this sports mentality society. Only in America can a person earn $50 million a year for throwing a ball into a basket. Meanwhile, public school teachers can't earn enough money to buy a house in the neighborhoods they work in.

Do you really think that teaching some twelve year old's something you've learned to an advance level is harder than practicing a sport and your body for 8-12 hours a day? Also, does anyone care about a public school teacher? It's all about supply and demand my friend.

The myth that college athletics is a money maker is dead. Teams are money sinks. Strong evidence: google highest paid government employee by state. Most are coaches. Athletics does not mean better brains, another dead myth, just ask Stephen Hawking. Teams DO mean high liability risk to universities, they DO mean frequent conflicts of interest (lowering the bar on grades). And worst of all, these "special ed" students are massively subsidized by other students in a time where universities are unaffordable. Let's be blunt, college athletic programs are taxpayer/student supported training camps for parasitic professional sports teams. Professional sports teams that make ungodly profits, BECAUSE they are subsidized. It's time pro sports pull their own weight. Pay their own bills. Like real men (and women). It's easy to do, just spin off the college teams into standalone public corporations. Then universities can invest without liability and with less conflict of interest. Sports teams can invest (but they probably won't since these are money sinks or they'd be running these teams already). Teams can sink or swim based on "free markets" (which universities teach.) It will end other students and parents being forced to subsidize "athletes". It will end coaches being the highest paid public officials in almost every state. It will free up education money for education. It's a winner, but I'm guessing it won't happen.

College is a joke anyways. It's ridiculous that athletes are required to go to college in order to play professionally. A lot of classes in college, at least for the first two years, are meaningless. And seeing how the topic for that paper was Rosa Parks, I can conlude that whatever class that was assigned in was meaningless. Shit, from 1st grade up to 12th grade, most classes are meaningless. Our whole education system is designed to conditon you into doing shit you don't wanna do, because you'll be doing shit you don't wanna do at a pointless job when you're done with school.

They need to monitor these things closer, just like most things in the government. I bet most cops dont need to pass IQ tests. Whats little to YOU can be huge to the WORLD. Nutcase its not gonna happen anymore i promise you, you can watch and complain but im gonna do something about it. If THEY have a say why shouldnt you? Excuses...

Some people are not equipped for abstract or analytical thinking, I'm surprised that people are surprised about this. We have an education system with a very narrow understanding of 'intelligence', and this standard is imposed on everyone regardless of the individual's temperament. In some ways it would actually be better if we had a caste system

This is a slap in the face to every person who has put countless hours into writing papers that are in no way relevant to real life, but have to get the grades to achieve a degree that may lead to a successful career. Many of these athletes get free rides to college to come and play a fucking sport. The rest of us work our asses off to pay the thousands of dollars each year to attend school and take it seriously.
