The U.S. government expects children, as young as 18 months and unable to speak, to represent themselves in immigration court to fight against their deportation. Lawyers in Miami made a coloring book to help kids understand what they’re facing.

@@treacherousanomaly3430 Probably ages 11- 17 who can answer the questions and maybe have been given some advice with a sympathetic judge. But other than that you're pretty much on your own. Most adults can't represent themselves in court let alone with a language barrier.

As a french law student, i don't understand. Is there no lawyer obligatorily assigned to a minor? There is no law stating that a minor is criminally irresponsible under 7 or 8?

Children are not slow at All! On the contrary. All the evidence shows that children's minds are very plastic and can learn up to 6 or more languages at the same time! I learned English when I was 4 or 5 in school without even realizing it. I thought the kids were speaking in Spanish. More importantly, do you realize what's happening here? They're being prepared to go to trial to defend themselves! They might be quick but they can't learn a new language and stand trial in just weeks! The question you pose is very telling in the first place. You see little Hispanic children and the first thing you think about is that they're not speaking in English? How about the fact that they've been separated from their parents, put in jail, and are being prepared, by strangers, to stand trial in defense of their request for political asylum, alone! Maybe you're a bit racist...or a lot? Notice how you saw those little brown children and completely forgot about their humanity.

I came home from my first day at Kindergarten all excited that the kids and everyone was speaking in Spanish. I didn't even realize that I was the one speaking in English. I must have picked it up in pre-K and over the summer playing with neighborhood kids. You have a Hispanisized name so I'm puzzled by your point of view.?. Perhaps you live in a community that is more segregated? In those cases it might take a little longer and they might develop a distinct accent, but they'll learn.

Simon Sozzi it depends on the situation sir, I’m Mexican but i spent most of my childhood studying abroad. My point is, you are not going to teach a 3 year old legal terms or anything similar, kids learn in steps, that’s why I say they are a little slow. Most of them are to scared to even remember what to say, aside from that, I was just answering your question!
