A Common Problem I Experienced Since Ownership Of My Mercedes CLk500

This part is a common failure point in the M113 drivetrain, It left me stranded in a parking lot! The concept of replacing the sensor is quite easy, it is just getting to it that is the difficult part!

Crank Position sensors last at least 12 years if genuine MB or Bosch. No need to change every two years.

I replaced the Crankshaft Position Sensor on my 05 CLK500 twice, with 5yrs and 50K miles in between. The first time I did it I had the same issues with access. The second time, I figured out that it's about a 20 or 30-minute job if you take the MAF off and kneel on top of the engine so you can reach the sensor with your left hand.

Will the car just switch off which would be a problem in heavy traffic or highways riding as the traffic is heavy here , what other mechanical issues or electrical issues does the car give, would it work fine as a daily driver without breaking the bank as the car is inexpensive here but I wouldn't want to suffer on repairs

Once it goes bad it will shut off but you would have to give it 25-35 minutes to cooldown before it will start up again to get it home to replace that part

hey bro, i’ve owned a clk500 for almost two years now, it has 120,000 miles. i hear a lot of creaking like old bed springs in my suspension even though i changed upper+lower control arms and struts. i also hear loud creaking when i turn the steering wheel to parallel park and i just changed my tie rods, this is only a noticeable problem in cold weather have you had any sort of issues?

This sounds like a strut that’s old. Anyways sounds like you have done a full suspension service which is good! You shouldn’t be hearing that noise after. One thing I would say is sometimes people forget to lubricant the struts at were the shocks meet which causes squeaky noises after sometime. But you shouldn’t be hearing that after charging All the parts you just listed

This is usually the sway bar bushings usually the rears. just jack up the rear and its a couple E bolts.

Needs a transmission service. How many miles ago did you service the transmission?

when you changed the sensor did you disconnect the battery? did you have do do anything after you installed it?

You don’t have to unplug the battery. After you change the part you don’t have to do anything else but to drive and enjoy the car 🤘🏾

My 2004 clk has been sitting for 3yrs. It wasn't starting or cranking at all. I replaced the ECU and it started to crank but will not turn over. I'm going to do this and see if this is the issue

I’m not sure if the ECU might need programmed to the car since you changed. I will try and find that out. That’s odd that the old ECU isn’t working. Was that a problem is that why it sat for three years?

@@HeyboysGarage Old ECU got wet. It started intermittently starting..not starting. Then it just stopped starting and turning over. I order a ECU from eBay and installed it cranks but doesn't start. . It's so hard to find anybody to program the ECU to the car . Don't know if that's it's since now it's trying to start

I’ve owned my clk 500 about a month now. The issue I’m experiencing right now is a long crank to failure and then next crank it starts immediately. Or if I’m lucky it cranks right away. Mechanic I talked to believes it’s my fuel pump/filter or both. Possible fuel pressure loss, but I’m going to pick his brain about the crank shaft position sensor now as well! Ever since you got the car did you do a full tune up service? It could highly possibly relate to fuel pump. Other possibilities would be spark plugs

Previous owner said he had it done at 100k mark it’s currently at 119k so far I’ve changed the drive belt, air filters, cabin filter, tires, & an oil change. Called Mercedes to see about any old recalls there was one for the sun roof took it in to get checked but mine didn’t need the recall service. I hear fuel pumps are common issue on this platform? Not too sure, but I already have the new filter on hand I’m just debating whether or not to do the fuel pump myself it seems pretty straight forward. I eventually want to do the plugs anyways and clean the fuel injectors/rails etc. basically the whole fuel delivery system other that that my car is running great! I do have a SRS light on that I’m not quite sure about and the esp comes and goes.

Investing in the icarsoft scanner will help you out with the SRS. ESP and and going is a warning sign of something going bad soon

Hey bud. A quick question. Did you sort the SRS issue out? I had this happen to me and it related to the seatbelt butler which failed. I took it in to Mercedes and they replaced the motor for the butler and the SRS warning was then gone. I thought it had something to do with airbags, but apparently not. Worth checking if your seatbelt butler is not working.

change the crank shaft position sensor they are cheap and this is a symptom of a faulty sensor

Reliability is above and beyond most cars you will see on the roads. Maintenance depends. If you do it yourself you save money vs taking the car to a shop.

No you don’t, it’s just a crankshaft position sensor. You really have to get in there and change it out not much than to take off parts such as the mass airflow sensor and throttle body to get in there. If you have to get on top of the engine I would

It never stalled out yet it just wants to stall at some lights it’s still doing it gets worse but hasn’t stalled and no codes

I would be willing to bet you spun the tires before parking. High rpm’s at low speed is a common reason for that code. I would bet the sensor is not bad. Especially considering it cleared. My Toyota pickup does it often in rainy weather and snow because the rear is so light. Chances of that sensor being bad are slim.
