In case it wasn't clear in the video: the wooden box contains soft pastels from various campanies but they are all handmade, mostly from Schmincke and Sennelier, but also from Unison, Blue Earth, Jackson's, Art Spectrum and Mount Vision. I got the Sennelier's for an incredible price of 50 pounds for the 80 pastel set.
If you are interested in where I purchased the pastels for more than 50% off, I purchased the 120 Rembrandt and 80 Sennelier set here: www.cassart.co.uk. They still have the Rembrandt set for 50 pounds, but the sale on Senneliers has already ended. They regularly have sales like this so you should probably just wait a bit and check their site every 2 weeks or so.
If you are a student you can also get an additional 10% off (I got it) and they offer free international shipping for over 100 pounds. By the way, this isn't paid promotion, just letting you know where I got them :D

Thank you Larisa. This video was very helpful to me. I have a large set of Rembrandt pastels, and recently began learning to paint by following along with some of the KZbin painting videos. But I couldn't understand why I wasn't getting the same clean color layers. My pastels tend to mix with the color underneath. Now I realize that many of the pros are using soft pastels. You are so right. Different types of pastels will give you different results! That was something that no one else ever mentions.

Mooshieloo That's great! :D Another thing that can hugely affect that is the paper, are you using a sanded paper like Pastelmat, UART or Colourfix? I am thinking of doing a similar video to this one where I compare Pastelmat, UART and Ingres paper because I got some questions on that theme :)

Larisa, Thank you so much for your advice. I recently started using Canson Mi-Tientes paper, because it was recommended by another artist on KZbin. It's a good paper, but I don't think it's sanded. I use fixative between the pastel layers. I've checked into ordering UART paper, but it's far beyond my budget at this time. I will try to get some eventually. Thanks again for all your inspiring lessons. Your work is stunning.

Larisa, thanks so much for this comparitive demonstration. It was exactly what I was looking for. I am very happy with The Rembrandt pastels but am looking into getting super soft ones as well and am interested in Sennelier. This demonstration shows how they compare. Beautifully done! Thanks again!

Cool. Thank you very much for this very helpful video. I thought Rembrandt was the most expensive....i am a newbie....and don't want to invest a lot of money right away.....i found that FAber CAstell mini soft pastels are pretty good in price, also Kohe Noor which is double the price.....Rembrandt where i live is about 7 times more expensive than Faber castel. My teacher advices me to buy a minimum of 120 pieces of Rembrandt or worse come to worse 72 piece....both are very hard to find where i live, i have searched a lot but only managed to find 48 pieces with FAber Caster and Kohe Noor.....i don't really know what to do. Should I buy the chalk type which are harder or the soft type like FAber Castell. I found that the Rembrandt you did seems more attractive and the softer one seemed more amateur looking.......also what liquid did you use at the beginning please? water or alcohol? Thanks very much for your help.

Thank you Larisa for the informative video. I want to know if Rembrandt pastels are more softer than the Korean Mungyo pastels. I have the Mungyo Gallery MPA 60 pastels. But I am not quiet happy with them. So I need to know if I can go for the Rembrandt, if they are more softer in comparison with Mungyo. Can you help me decide.

On what paper did you do this. I want to start with pastels. What set would you suggest .
@LarisaCarliArt
@LarisaCarliArt 6 жыл бұрын
Pastelmat paper :) I would suggest Rembrandt's since they are still high quality as quite soft, but don't cost as much as other softer ones. I just published a new video and I only used those there, so you can see they are quite good, I actually like them a lot.

Thanks, very helpful :-) I’m considering buying some hand made soft Pastels to ad to my set of hard Pastels and Pastel Pencils, are looking out for a small set, say 20 ? Do you have any recommendations?
@LarisaCarliArt
@LarisaCarliArt 6 жыл бұрын
Li Art Sennelier or Unison sets of half pastels (the pastels in my box are almost all halves), I'm not sure which kinds of paintings you make so I can't suggest one specific set :) Both Unison's and Sennelier's pastels are available in different small sized sets of half pastels (around 16, 24, 30,...) and different color selections (general selection, landscape, seascape, wildlife, portrait etc.) and they usually cost less than comparable companies, like Schmincke. Schmincke is probably the softest, but Sennelier's are very comparable to them, but quite more affordable. Some people love Schminckes the most, some don't want to use anything other than Unison and the same goes for other companies, so it really depends on your style of painting :) I love all of them but each brand for a slightly different purpose. Even within sets handmade pastels are quite different, for example darker ones are usually considerably harder than pure colors. But all handmade ones I've tried until now have been very pigmented so just buy which ones you can get cheaper :D
