thank god for this video, I had "lost" some garlic in July, dug around but it seemed missing til I cleaned up the bed today I saw the young looking garlic like in your video, carefully dug it up and have them soaking in water. Getting the bed ready and planting in a bit! I came in to rewatch how you planted around the 11 minute mark. Thank you Gary!!

First off I love your videos. I am having more success with my little apartment garden than I ever have. I haven’t even watched the video yet, but I was thinking boy I sure hope he puts out a video on garlic. I’d like to try my hand at that even if it’s small amounts I will also be doing garlic chives because of the limited space

I used to grow German White hard neck garlic when I lived in MD. It was so easy, I planted it in October, forgot about it until June or July when I harvested it. I now live in FL and it is much more complicated. I have to order it online wait until it arrives around October/November and then put it in the fridge for at least a couple of months, plant it and baby it with fertilizer until I harvest it in April/May. Most of the garlic I harvest is very small but if we are lucky to get a cold winter I get decent heads of garlic. Very informative video, thanks for sharing.

Thanks to your garlic video last year, I grew garlic successfully (first year). Was a little disppointed with the size of the Music variety but I save some to replant this year. Also have other varieities. The German one did the best, so many large bulb.

I always add granular, compost and bone meal to my garlic containers- smallish bulbs this year - Is triple phosphate 0-45-0 overkill or should I add it in the fall. I’ll try keeping up with the liquid fertilizer bi monthly in the spring. Thanks as always for your advice. Steve zone 6 b
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 2 ай бұрын
The thing with bone meal is it takes much longer time to breakdown than 1 fall/winter. But you add it yearly, so it should be giving up is phosphorous. I dont think Triple P is overkill. I have found that it's more about a steady supply vs increased amounts. And I found the water-soluble nitrogen in spring really helps. It gets a lot from the sun so green is good.

The last 2 winters have been too warm. After I learned from the first one I decided to plant as late as possible and apply thick mulch to prevent growth before spring. Too much growth and the bulb uses all its energy before spring and it takes it awhile to get going again. That first winter it kept growing to 6” at least and cloves were not as large as 2nd year. I fertilize with nitrogen in spring after pulling away most of the mulch.

What is the main benefit of keeping the bulbs in the ground throughout the summer, as apposed to just planting in the fall? Will it produce bigger bulbs?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN Ай бұрын
No key reason. The standard way is to plant in fall. I found that if rooted, they tend to take better in the fall relocation. Interesting that you let some heads stay in the ground all summer and transplant in the fall. Also, I've had problems with softneck here too but never tried planting in the spring. Maybe I'll just use an organic head from the grocery store in the spring and see what happens.

As an experiment, do you think if I put my hard neck, garlic bulbs in the refrigerator for about 3 to 4 weeks and then plant them in fabric pots on heat mats under grow lights, they would grow indoors and produce hopefully a medium size bulb. For the soft necks, I would skip the refrigerator and just do the same thing as the hard necks and try to grow them indoors. Do you think there would be any success in trying this method? Cheers, sincerely, Ray.
