Hey Gary, I have a lot of horse manure in various stages of composting. Some of it is mixed with straw and horse urine. I need to amend several beds that are new this year, and have settled quite a bit and compacted due to clay heavy topsoil. They all are still planted but have straw mulch on them as well. I was thinking I could add several inches of semi-composted manure right on top of the straw mulch, and over the winter months, continue to compost as well as break down the straw and still leave enough nitrogen in the soil. I would of course mulch on top of the manure/old straw mulch for several months, and come Spring, pull back top layer of mulch, and add full compost to make sure I have a nice top layer. Do you think semi-aged horse manure has enough nitrogen to help break down straw and still contribute to the soil?

My second round of cucumbers didn’t do much, basically similar to what was shown here. I think you are spot on. My garden became neglected toward the end of the season due to lack of time with school stuff, soccer for the kids, just life in general. The fertilizing wasn’t kept up and this is what happened. Thanks for the videos, I hope you keep making them for years to come.

If you hvent amended them then get a good organic fertilizer and apply it now so it has time to break down and it will help the wood to break down even during the cooler parts of the year. I would also add a good dose of like worm castings or azomite for trace elements now.

Great video! What is the time frame for the N to break down and become available in the fish emulsion since it's organic? Once available does it start leaching out also like synthetic N?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN Ай бұрын
Over Using any water-soluble can lead to excess washing away. You would really have to use soooooo much. Most of these just drifts deeper into the soil. So no worries. Much of the N is already available as that is why it's called water soluble. It is ready to be transferred via the roots into the plant. Fish emulsions pre rotted/broken down. Hi Gary, Another alternative would be to use alfalfa pellets (horse feed) in the fall. Sprinkle them throughout the garden bed, maybe give them a light watering-or not, and let nature do its thing. You can buy them in bulk at a feed and seed store for about $25 for an 80 pound bag. It is a great alternative if you are lacking compost. I think its NPK is about 2-0-2 (slow release).

I sift all my bagged mixes. I know it sounds tedious but I use the wood chips as mulch in my pathways and as they break down I add them to my garden the next year. I made a 3 ft by 3 ft framed screen as my sifter. I have 2 family members who work for a well known garden supply company and I’m lucky enough to get pallets of it free every year so it’s worth it to me to sift it.

My native soil is problematic, my garden beds are actually facing the following issues, one raised bed is a peat and compost based soil mix, so that soil tends to trend like 5.8 ph and need less fertilizer, the second bed is basically compost with a tiny bit of native soil and some peat in it just to keep it fluffy and loose, that bed is red hot on the phosphorous i put down bone meal yearly for 3 years with my 2x a year large fertilizer additions so I have had to dial back and add more feather meal as the nitrogen has recently been the only nutrient that is problematic in that bed. It has good healthy worm activity and soil is really loaded with micronutrients because I add azomite and etc frequently. My third bed is a soil and compost mix from a local garden supplier that has basically turned hard because its got a lot of clay and ive been adding perlite, and peat moss and attempting to break it up and make it useable might have to shovel it all out and make some new soil as that bed has been useless except for growing wheat.

That soil is horrible. Very compact, won't allow water to penetrate. I suggest that you add Agri type Aloe or Yucca to your watering can as they make will make the water wetter which will then make the water pentrate the soil better. Yucca contains natural saponins, which can help improve soil structure and enhance its ability to retain moisture. It can aid in making nutrients more available to plants, promoting healthier growth. The organic matter from yucca powder can improve soil aeration, allowing roots to access oxygen more easily.

Cover crops are massively over rated to be honest. They do work but not as well as people think and its soil dependent if you have a soil like my soil where its hugely sandy anything they add leaches out so fast that it doesnt benefit the soil and it doesnt add any organic matter which breaks down super fast in sandy soils.

I'm sorry to be so negative but it is very obvious that this Garden was neglected. You can tell because the soil is hydrophobic and that is definitely from improper watering. Also there's no Mulch on top at all. This is not all just the soils fault it's your daughter's fault fault as well . I see neglect

Well you are wrong but I understand your point. Any new soil that isn't over loaded with wood and problematic would have supported the plants. As I mixed in peat moss and fertilizers. You can see how it was prepared in the video that showed how it was built. Improper watering doesn't cause soil to become hydrophobic, it causes plants to be under watered. Mulch is alway a bonus but not used in every garden and gardens do fine. We will have to disagree on this one. Lots of gardeners purchase soil that turns out to be 'bad', lets not blame them.

Sooo…u spent $1000 or so on raised beds for children, looks like, without considering fertility or soil health, and now ur spending even more and advertising it (afterthought, oops). Got it.

Lol. You missed the point that bagged and shipped soil can call themselves anything. Many soils are loaded with with wood chips. I am fine pointing out mistakes and teaching them how to address them. I guess youre not. And it wasn't 1000's. Lol.

@@THERUSTEDGARDENthey didn't say thousands, they said 1,000 or so and really and truly what you should have said in this video is people should get their soil tested

Gary’s children are grown adults. He helped set these gardens up at her home. You can’t predict the condition of the soil you will receive. I purchased bagged soil (a well known brand) last year to top off my raised beds - it was full of wood chips. I appreciate the information he is sharing to improve the soil.

@@juliepoolie5494 instead of defending him why don't you suggest that he should tell people to do a soil test? I find it difficult to understand why you would support mediocrity and not try to understand both sides of this situation because at the end of the day we are trying to grow food and honestly isn't that what's most important?

There are cheaper ways of making raised beds. You would see that in some of his other videos. We all know there is a cost to start a garden. You can go all out like he did with his daughter or you can go less expensive! The point is the soil needed to be amended and he is telling us how to do it . The food we grow is healthy and depending how you go about it, it is safer than the store bought foods. Each year you make back some of the up front money you choose to spend. I guess you just don't get gardeners. Try a different site to give your negative advice.
