I really appreciate the timestamps. a lot of other great youtube gardeners on here but never take the time to. it is absolutely frustrating having to go back to a video trying to find a certain step you missed or need to hear again. like hey I watched how to plant my peppers step by step but now I'm having to scan through your video frame by frame to catch that 10 second clip where you mentioned something important.

Louisiana 8b over here. We are having crazy spring weather down here this year. Lots of rain, several hail storms, and two tornadoes in my area just in the last month. I’ve not put my tomatoes and peppers in the ground yet. They’ve been potted up from original containers, cotyledon removed, and planted deep in cups/recycled juice bottles. Your videos have been hugely inspirational and helped me expand my knowledge on growing edibles. I’ve got one raised bed, quite a few containers of herbs/flowers, and the tomatoes/peppers will go into the ground when the weather calms down. I know some have already put their veg in the ground down here. But my work schedule hasn’t been helpful to doing that yet. Huge thank you!!!

I am in Louisiana zone 8 and have started my tomatoes and peppers. Most of what I have done this year I have learned from your videos. You inspired me to make my own starting mix. I use a mixture of two parts coir, two parts worm castings, one part vermiculite, and toss in a bit of perlite. So far the seedings are the best I've ever had. Thanks for the fine instructional videos.

That is perfect. I just started adding in castings as it is pure and non mold and fungus feeding. Interesting fact is with castings, germination might be slower to start but the seed starts benefit in the end.

@@THERUSTEDGARDEN Dr. Gary, there is so much benefit from growing one's own garden in this day and age. I remember a story my aunt told me many years ago. It goes like this: three little brothers in her neighborhood used to come into her tomato garden and pull green tomatoes off her plants so they'd have balls to play with. Firstly, she took them to the store and bought them each a ball of their own to keep and play with. Then she cooked them some fried green tomatoes to show them these green "balls" were really food to eat, not to play with like a toy. When they were turning ripe, she invited them back each day to show them how they turn red. Then she'd slice a couple and let them eat fresh ripe tomatoes. She didn't think those poor little brothers had ever had a real tomato. 😧🍅😊. She taught them that real food grows in the ground, not at the store where it takes money to get it. (which she knew they didn't have any). Those little kids had a lot of questions of my dear auntie ( who lived in Northern Indiana). The next spring, she gave each of those boys a pot filled with soil from her garden patch and some seeds, tomato, I'm sure she said. The point is, she taught them where real food comes from. As these boys and my aunt got older, they all became good friends until the day my dear auntie passed away. Isn't that a touching story ? It's a true story as she sent me pictures of the brothers, and their nice tom plants with green balls hanging on them. It was a valuable lesson for these poor little kids to learn, I think. My dear auntie, bless her soul. Cheers, Gary, and bless you too, my friend. Bob in Montana.😁🍅😁

I decided to grow my own food. I began with sprouts last month. I have tremendous success. Now I want to grow a few veggies in my backyard in area 7, Phila PA. It's too early to plant outside as we've had snow this week and expect some next week too. I will get my cherry tomato seeds, peppers, and cucumber seeds this week along with the other essentials I need. I will begin the seedlings next month and keep them indoors until May. I am excited and inspired by your video. Thankyou !

A little to early, the end of March would be great for peas and the beginning of April great for other cool weather crops like lettuce. We want to get past nights in the 20's.The cool weather crops can take light freezing. Tomatoes and peppers have to wait till all danger of frost is gone and the night stay in the 50's which is yeah Mayish. You can support The Rusted Garden by using this link for anything you purchase on Amazon. It doesn't have to be garden related. Dona Davis I am assuming you are outside of Philly. The row homes do not give anyone much land to work with. I am 45 miles southwest from you in Chester County. Even in smaller communities one still has to move outside of the area.

I actually do live in Philly! I am using my small backyard. Since I am allergic to grass I may as well use the area to grow my food. Philly has a granite or slate underneath it's surface and I was advised not to plant directly in the dirt. I am going to make a container garden instead. It's going to be interesting. The ground is still cold even though it's springtime. Hahaha!

I am watching this on a Saturday night, with iced coffee, sitting in my enclosed patio garden "office" (I actually am sitting at a desk) looking out over my outer patio garden. I typically am here from the time I get up until the time I go to sleep. I mostly watch/listen to Gary, Brian (CGTV), CaliKim, Skinny Boy Randy, and the headless body gardener & Molly, from the UK. Everyone has said that I should get some friends. I believe I already do. 5 of them in fact. 😉

When i was a little boy we planted tomatos in a 10 acre farm. What we did was,all of us kids would do it. No slackers.😊 What we did was line up each would have A job. Planting them which we started down in bassment. First one would dig the shovel in the ground. Second one would PURE WATER INTO THE HOLE WITH ONE SMALLFISH. (2 INCH) . NEXT one would come along and stamp the soil down. Nexk one would take the hoe and weed. When rippend dad would open the field for u-pick. Also corn ,beans ,potatos, peppers, strawberries, raspberries. Nobody mentions putting fish or water in the hole before planting. Thanks for listening. GARY K

Peppers usually take more time to sprout than tomatoes, specially if the seeds are a bit older (dried). Some species of hot peppers can even take up to a month to sprout, even when using a heat mat. Did they sprout yet (month later)? Cheers.

The formula is four parts water to one part hydrogen peroxide. You can also use an organic method by using nematodes, which can be ordered online. i used some nematodes and they work WONDERS! Nematodes are microscopic worms that feed on fungus gnat larva! :-)

BT Israelensis works on flies and mosquitoes as well and does not let the larva mature. It will not harm warm blooded animals. I soak 2 tea spoons of the granules in water for a day and run them through a sieve, pore the liquid in a 16 to 28 once spray bottle top the bottle off with water and spray the soil. It works great in the house on white flies and fungus knats as well as out side . I don't know about any cold blooded animals' but I don't imagine how it could harm them.

Its rainy season here in the Philippines, it started after i seeded Cherry Tomatoes last Sept 6, 2021, then a typhoon passed by, submerged my seed cups for a day or two ( couldn’t go out) . Some have survived, but there was minimum sun plus there was scattered rainshowers, its only today that the sun was shining and i took the seedling cups outside for them to strengthen their growth. I will transfer them into bigger pots in 2 weeks time ! i learned from that tomatoes want their top soil a little dry and the get their water source from the bottom water. Thank you so much, i am a newbie in this field, and i am learning from you as my guru !

As it started to absorb the water, it got hard and wedged into the bucket. It took some unnecessary effort to break it up and put it into a larger container. So, put the block in a large enough container to give it enough room to swell up and break apart. Is this a duh moment? Guess you live, try things and learn every time. Happy gardening.

Instead of boiling water, I bake my compost from outdoors in the oven, and then start with seeds indoors. Works like a charm, no bugs, no problems.

Hi, I'm in NJ and started gardening just a few years ago, my husband and kids used to get all the plants so we can plant on summer, last year I tried starting from seeds and it was a big failure 😅, but I didn't give up, went out and bought my plants again and plant them, I really got obsessed with gardening videos and trying again from seeds, today is April 27 and I already started planting indoors like a month ago, I have all my peppers beautiful and growing, but now I have to start taking them inside, since I just learned that on the video, hopefully they don't die on me😔. I have cilantro, parsley, beets, lettuce, radish, basil and chards planted outside and even though it took loooong to germinate, I can see they're germinating now🥰🥰🥰, it's an amazing feeling to see that😍. Now to my question, I ordered from your website some tomato seeds last week, got them today and now I'm wondering if it's too late plant those seeds, since you say on this video that you already plant them in February or March and we are at the end on April now, so I don't know if is worth to plant my seeds, or should I just wait for the ones already started from home depot??? Help plsssss, I really hope that ypu can answer my question. Thank you so much for your videos, they're great🥰🥰🥰

So time lines on videos are more guidelines. You can start tomato seeds now and, once germinated, they will appreciate the warmer controlled temps. You can plant them at 4 weeks old too so get them out faster. Many time we say 6-8 weeks before last frost. 4 weeks works too. Tomatoes should be fine. Thank you so much for posting this - I watch a lot of gardening videos and some are so long without a lot of substance. This may be long, but it's packed with information, genuinely a one-stop-shop (and including the digital table of contents was clever and kind). You talk in such an engaging but non-threatening way, it's easy to soak up the info. You remind of my favorite plant bio professor from college (although his specialty was ferns). Hugely helpful, very informative - my tomatoes and peppers are well on their way to a great yield this year. Thank you!!

Glad to share. Very appreciated. Good luck this year. I need a an 18x18 to 20x20 concrete slab poured in my backyard for a gazebo. The ground is pretty level. I assume 4 inches is needed.

Thanks for condensing these videos into one video. I grew my tomatoes and peppers for the 1st last year based on your method but only Organic materials and fertilizers and I had huge harvest of both of them. I was canning and dehydrating them for months. Thank you!!

So glad it helped. Sound like you were highly successful. I saw a fellow that dehydrated the tomatoes and then pulverized them. I might try that this year.

Dear Gary, a HUGE Thankyou. I just came across your video on Tomatoes and Chillies. I live in E.Africa but buy my seeds when I visit family in the UK. I really went for it this year and tried 6 varieties including from the US which all worked to a varying extent. I also tried Jalapenos this year-perhaps late because we are in winter now. Your step by step videos were just what I needed. I have various books which are good but can't compete with your videos- can't wait to start in late next week (our Jan/Feb over here). Thanks again and Best Wishes.
