To avoid damping off, I put seed starting mix into an aluminum turkey roaster pan you can buy at the Dollar Store, and I pour boiling water into it, enough to cover the soil, basically steaming hot mud. Allow it to cool, then scoop out the soil with a food strainer, and fill the plastic cups. No more damping off, all the seeds sprout and everything is healthy.

Gary I enjoy watching your videos. I have begun my kitchen garden over 2 years now and I wish to say thanks for your support. I am unable to source most of my vegetables or herbs from seeds however. For example, onion seeds are unavailable. Am I really able to begin these from kitchen scraps? Could you include some videos like this if possible?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN4 жыл бұрын
Thanks. Glad you have success. You can get onion greens from scraps but they are biennials. So the first year they bulb, the 2nd year the flower for seeds. You have the mature onion scraps from 1 year old plants. Most like they will try and flower but.... now you can collect your own onion seeds. thank you for this video. PlEASE, can you do a series of videos about hydroponic veggies and citrus fruit gardening, specifically deep water culture? I am a garden newbie during the stay at home quarantine,[ so, you can use all my stuff, I have absolutely everything even the popsicle sticks that floated away during the seedling process. Right now I have over a dozen seedlings and have no idea what they are right now, but I have loads of green leaves lol...

The roots of onions can be trimmed back with scissors if they too long to make them easier to plant out, same with leeks. Put trimmings in a tub tho so onion fly can't smell them. Always transplant in the cool of early morning.

(HUG) Thanks so much for your video, when the seeds start sprouting and you can see the tiny leaves do you put them immediately under the grow light and on a warming mat?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN6 жыл бұрын
Get them to the light asap. I start them under light and leave it on even before they pop. They may or may not need a heat mat. If the area is 70's it isn't needed.

Gary, when it’s time to re-water, should we follow the same procedure as initial watering? Pour into bottom, let them soak for 30 mins and dump the rest? I just started mine 48 hours ago and they’re already sprouting, which I am assuming is a bad thing. I made a lot of mistakes already. Thanks for these great videos! ✌🏻

Yeah. Always water from bottom in same way. I now have an Amazon Influencer's Storefront. As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases. You out seedlings under grow lights. Do you use electric heat mats. I usually start my seedlings in the basement and it is consistently 60 degrees.

I just subbed to your channel and I like the way you cut up this video into sections. I haven't gone through all of the sections yet, but quickly wanted to ask you: Does all of these seeds get planted in the same soil?

We start them in deli containers people give us and start them inside. The flowers get started in 120 flats and drain trays in the nursery which uses up all my seed flats, so we start veggies separately - outa room at the moment. Have to find a solution to that.
