Today I'm answering the burning question, how to you make extra money with your farm. While our farm is not our main source of income, we've had to get resourceful in order to be able to keep the farm running. Today I'm sharing my experiences on the best ways to allow your farming endeavor to pay for itself.

When we first bought our 5 acres 7 years ago we set out to cover the cost of our homeowner's insurance and taxes. We more than did that the 1st year and I felt amazing! We are on one income and I felt like I was contributing. Then, I wanted to see if I could have it pay for itself as far as mortgage payments plus the taxes/insurance. I spent so much time trying to make money that I felt so much pressure and stopped really ENJOYING our beautiful place, I got burned out pretty bad and exhausted. A few years I made the amount of annual mortgage payments and taxes & insurance and it was great, it really helped us in tighter times but the truth is it added a lot of extra stress on our finances to be buying tons of meat chicken feed and supplies to butcher 600 chickens a year etc. There was more stress overall so we weren't able to keep our spending as tight as we might have....so yes lots of $ came in but it TOOK a lot of money to make that money and our spending was more stress based and we had to go into a bit of debt until we got the chickens raised which was a bit risky if we'd have had a failure of batches. We finally learned how to set our deposits at the right amount so we didn't have to go into "debt" but then we were in debt to our customers in a way too. I learned a lot about myself, and we gained a ton of skills. Right now, we decided to take a step back from making money off the farm and we are focusing on reconnecting with the enjoyment of it just for us, for our consumption and to get back to why we wanted acreage in the first place...enjoy the space around us, awesome neighbors (sharing our bounty), and we are thankful for the money we still bring in but I am not putting pressure on myself to earn a certain threshold. I think you have great advice in this video, I wish I'd have listened to it years ago.

AMAZING information. I recommend one more way you can make money, put it in a book with pictures and graphs of notes you already have taken (and a transcript of this video) and go to Amazon and self publish. Maybe even add a couple of spreadsheets where you keep track and include them in the workbook you publish (there's 2 books, the actual book and workbook which is an annual purchase with calendar). It will generate more money than you get from KZbin. I'd buy it.

Hmm...what an idea! How wpuld you actually make the books? Would you have to pay a company to make them?print on your pc and bind yourself?(Forgive me for asking seemingly stupid questions please!)

@@krystaldaniels7940 you can "self publish" which means that you have to have the publishing file (usually in Adobe InDesign) completely ready, edited, proofed, and laid out... then Amazon prints it on demand as orders come in.

@@krystaldaniels7940 Krystal, you could print them from a PC, but that is probably the most expensive way to publish (not to mention time consuming). The next most expensive is to have a company do it on demand. As folks order books, they get produced, then shipped. Probably best for a first book, until you can gauge how many buyers you are likely to have. If it does well, you can pay for say 1000 to be made at 1/2 the price of the first on-demand ones. But you are stuck with them if they stop selling. Sooo...I'd try the on-demand 1st, then have a batch made if you get reviewed by someone like Mother Earth News and sales increase. Minimizes the risk, maximizes the profits. If you hit the bigtime, you can get picked up by a publishing house. But this is becoming increasingly harder and rarer. As you can see, I've done a bit of research into this. :-) I hope this answers your question!

I am a disabled Veteran living in a one bedroom apartment. I decided this year (thanks to you) to begin a container garden in my pretty nice size patio. I plan grow at capacity for my consumption and sell excess veggies to supplement my dosability income. I started a worm farm also to create my own compost as I'd like to grow everything as organically/naturally as possible. Eventually, would love to have my own little homeastead. I've grown gourds and luffa to sell. Some gourds are simply dried, cleaned, and sold in their natural state. Others, I crafted with to sell. Luffa, which is a type of gourd, is dried and the outer skin removed before selling. Another free resource is to use trimmings from your berry or grape vines. Form them into wreaths or weave into trivets or baskets to sell. Lastly, a favorite thing I have sold is packaging surplus heirloom garden seeds that I won't need.

I believe that there is another way to view a small farm. You see , the actual bottom line is , you have to have some place to live. I have a younger brother and he has chosen to live in a senior's apartment. His monthly costs are much more than mine. Of course he has no lawn to mow and things like that. He also has a designated parking space for his car. He tells me that he can be fined if his car is not within the required distance from each side of his parking space. In other words, he can not be too close to someone else's parking space. Me ? I won't put up with that kind of regimentation.! That is what he has for his $1,500.00 per month. And he is satisfied with it. I on the other hand , live on a small 6.5 acre farm. At least I call it a farm. My basic living costs are about $700.00 a month , I can park anywhere I want to because there are no lines for me. Plus I have a three car garage and I can park anywhere within my garage. Oh , there is no roof over my brother's parking space. The bottom line is , whether I make any income from my small farm or not , I still require a place to shelter my body and a place to lay my head at night . So , I think that it may as well be here on my small farm . Here , I then have the opportunity to provide myself with better food . Any income that I may make by selling my excess is a bonus.

I planted LOTS of extra greens for chicken winter feed. That keeps egg production up and yolks deep orange. On market days I sold out of eggs. Also sold out all baked goods. People love home baked goodies!

I'm an original Mother Earther. In the 70's, we bartered a LOT! We also practiced co-op as neighbors.Anything that was costly, like honey, we bought together to keep the price down. A gallon glass jar holds 12 lbs. And to this day we are still buying in bulk and splitting the cost as much as possible. I will be raising Barred Rocks and hatching this one breed. Folks here tend to like this good, old style laying hen. Yes duck eggs make for rich cakes! Wet hatching goslings should net you at least $7.00 apiece, day old and the eggs can be sold for art work projects. I used a Sears redwood 400 egg incubator. Great video and & helpful advice Jess!

another great video :) my mom passed but she used to make a couple crafting things that sold rather well. figured id share them with you.. one she would make decorative fans from wallpaper i think it was and lace and floral arrangements. she would make them in 3 piece sets so people would get a big fan, med fan, and a small fan or 2 small ones. she would use a hot glue gun to attack the lace and floral arrangements. another thing she would do is making hat stands from 2 wooden hearts and a dowel rod between them. then she would buy like small wicker hats and decorate those with flowers and lace and whatnot and those hats used to sell rather nice. wanted to share with you since you take the liberty to share with everyone else ;) she said those clown masks used to sell rather well also and you could buy them cheap plain. then she had paint and stuff she would use for them and ribbon type material to deco them. then etching made some rather nice stuff she could sell reasonable :) best of luck to you with these ideas.

I see one of the biggest mistake in people starting a homestead is starting off with animals. I would start off a garden. Especially a small garden. It won't overwhelmed you. If your animals are sick or die. You would be over stress. If things go wrong. Your can reset faster, your loss would be less. It's really hard to find buyers in the USA. That's why I moved to Vietnam to homestead. People need to do research on buyers before getting into homestead because you will have expenses like anything else. A lot of people believe homestead is that people can live off the land. It's not completely true. If you can eat chicken all year round. You need money for feed, medicine, electricity, water, salt, sugar, taxes and ect. I would be realistic in getting into homestead. It's going to be more business. Good luck everyone. This is all great advice, even if you don’t have a homestead. We have a single income household in a city with 3 cats and a dog. We bought our house a year ago and have had to do a lot of work on the property because of poor work done by years of previous homeowners. In order to cover our debts, medical bills, pets’ needs, household maintenance, renovations, and build emergency savings and luxury savings accounts, we have to follow a fairly strict budget and be very resourceful. For example, we had a retaining wall completely wash out and bought our retaining wall materials on sale while a rebate was offered and are doing all the labor ourselves with a little help from some friends. We redesigned the retaining wall to create more functional use of that corner of the property, as it had been completely useless before. Now it will have an access to the back yard for equipment and a level space to build a shed in the future. As a result, we hope to get a much cheaper quote in removing the half dead ash tree from the back yard that’s hanging over the house, now that we can get equipment back there and winter is approaching. Removing the tree will not only remove a hazard from our property, but will also allow sunlight to a spot in our yard that would make a perfect second vegetable garden bed. It all boils down to being resourceful, prioritizing, and avoid frivolous spending.

Another great income idea is to rent out a small cabin for vacation rentals. We have a 1000 square foot small home, but can't legally rent it, so are considering offering farming or crafting knowledge workshops in the future, or potentially investing into build a commercial kitchen that we can then rent out.

This is by far the best video I have seen so far on being able to make a little income with a small homestead. I am a country girl who always wanted my own small farm even though we didn't have one growing up but family everyone around us did. Im still dreaming about my own homestead but until then I have put to use my urban backyard with a raised bed and container garden (made with free or reclaimed resources) and happily was finally able to get my own chickens. I was smart and just have 4 little ladies.

I'd like to add one more recommendation for a potential source of egg income IF you have geese, Rhea, Emu, Ostrich (I wouldn't go buy any of these just for this purpose, but if you already have them) there is an entire subculture of people who elaborately decorate these eggs. We carve them, cut them and put hinges on them to make jewelry and music boxes, etc. Think Faberge eggs...sort of ;). Anyway, a large single clean goose egg can start at $4 each and go upwards to $10 or more depending on the size and shape. Double yolk eggs....you can really get a nice dollar for. The cleaning process is tedious but not difficult, most egg decorators prefer one hole eggs (which is actually doable) Ratite eggs (ostrich, emu, rhea) start at $6 to $8 per egg and go up from there for emu and rhea, Ostrich start at $10 or $12 and most average $20 to $25 for larger and can go even more in some cases. Hopefully this was helpful to someone who may have these birds and wants to help cover the feed bill ;) google "Egg Art" or "Egging" and you will get a better idea of what people do with some of these eggs

Sell your flowers, too. Sun flowers and zinnias are popular and could rake in some serious cash. Sun flowers, in particular are great for harvesting the seeds. I toss my dried heads of mammoths to my chickens and they love to peck through them. Thank you for your awesome vid!

We started our 2 raised beds this year by turning the soil with a shovel and a hoe. It was hard work but got the soil better this year then we did when we used a tiller last year. I love this. We sell Wood since we have a very big Forest. Thats our main "Homestead" income. Other that Ben's Medical Leave from the Army. We are not ready to have animals for now.

I just came across your video and I am so thankful I did. I have a small plot where I garden and I especially love planting heirlooms. It never occurred to me that I can sell them as seedlings or even a basket of assortment of veggies! I can do that!! Thank you so much for this vid. I mostly save money by repurposing a lot of things and growing food, cooking from scratch and canning, drying, freezing. You can do it Bear Tree....Honestly, I would concentrate on the farm replacing the need to purchase food (that right there will recoup most costs), and then to make $$, the easiest way is to provide starter plants before each season, as well as saving your own seed to sell. Lettuce and tomato seeds sell by the MILLIONS every spring...plus you can easily ship across the country.

Yes, I live in a neighborhood and I always look on next door before buying. For my garden I got garden fencing, fencing stakes, wood, plants. I have saved so much! Chances someone is more than happy to give you their leftovers ;)

Starter plants (spring and fall) and save your seeds. Start with those for minimal risks and big payoffs. Branch out to microgreens, then produce and others. It CAN be done! 6 acres....so jealous!
