I cover seed starting, supplies, lighting indoor/outdoor, watering, fertilizing, acclimating, and planting your tomato transplant outdoors. I use growth examples of tomatoes at 1, 2, 3, 4, and 8 weeks of growth and provide other useful information to start your own seed starts and plant them outside. All the basics. Check out my playlist below for more details.

Thank you SO MUCH for this video. I just planted some seeds 2 weeks ago. I have a question. When I transfer them into a bigger pot do I use new soil mix? Is it still seed soil? I am very new to this. I appreciate your feedback.

I up potted my tomato seedlings directly into Solo cups with slits for drainage cutting bottom edges then placed in tray until able to move outside. We had such a long slow start to summer last year, they did much better than in smaller 4 inch pots because of their vigorous roots.

nice donna, i went with starting seeds in 1 inch plug trays, 12 plugs per tray with 2 seeds in each. yesterday i up potted into Gary's 2.5 inch pots and was thinking about solo cups for the last step or just going straight to the garden. im going to try about 30 tomato plants this year in total. i hope your garden does well this year!

I planted my tomato seeds in pods. The only water I used was 2 uncoated aspirin in a gallon of rainwater. Now they are growing great lots of tomatoes here in zone 9. I have not seen any disease nor have I sprayed them w anything( so far). I have had some algae gnats that I dispatched w mosquito bits and neem oil and jar lids w vinegar and a few drops of dawn detergent. Gary you have really helped me and I watch all your videos..ps. I started really early and had to bring my seedlings inside a few times, but I’ll have a nice harvest soon.

This video is very helpful to understand from start to finish the process of tomato starts. After your recent advice for my tomato starts, I'm happy to say they have changed their color from a light yellow/green to a nice shade of green with some purple under the leaves. I have also introduced them to the outside (semi shaded) planting table. I'm glad I got your advice in time to save the starts. Thanks again. 🍅🍅🍅🍅🍅

Great production! Managing the seed starts to show them at various stages of growth is very helpful. I'm just starting seeds for the first time. I was trying to figure out how to pour off the excess water from the flat if I put too much in and decided a turkey baster from the dollar store will be good for that. Until I get the hang of the amounts. Thanks again for another informative, confidence boosting ("I'm doing this one handed." Gary Pilarchik, 2022😆) video.

@Farmynator 2 жыл бұрын
We're all gonna starve soon if we don't grow our own, and here I see someone writing about buying a turkey baster to get water off a tray. Do yourself a favor, you have two hands (I assume), use the one to keep the nursery tray, and use the other to gently tipple over at an angle until most of the water is out. Or alternatively, take out the nursery tray, and then empty the other one. There you go, cash saved.

Hi Gary. I've watched several of your videos on seed starting indoors under grow lights. I know that you like to experiment and try different ways of doing things, and since you said two different distances to keep grow lights from seedlings (1-2", 2-3") to help them germinate, I was wondering if you could please clarify what you believe to be the best distance when using a shop light that is 5000 lumens and 6500 kelvins? I had tried with 3 individual round grow lights that I kept at 2 inches and they worked great. Then, I recently switched to a very long shop light with higher lumens- so I thought if the lumens are higher (5000 lm instead of 2000 lm) I should keep them slightly higher so as not to burn the seedlings, but have realized that they started suffering; especially my lettuce had some yellowing spots, some browning, and looked to be 'stretching for the lights'. Everything was great until I switched to the higher lumens, but kept them farther away..... not exactly convinced what the problem is; I was careful with bottom watering only when the tops were dry, etc. If you could please give me a little feedback on what it could be in your experience, as well as what the distances should be when using various lumen/ kelvin numbers I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you! Waiting for your next book to come out!!

So you really just have to test it and take notes. Start 2 inches for germination. Once germinated you can move them to your 4 inch height lights. There just isn't an exact distance for lights. Thank you for your great videos. I have a question, why when I make my own DIY potting mixes sometimes the water just sits on top of the soil and takes a little bit of time to soak in? Is it too much perlite? I’ve been using two parts peat moss, two parts earthworm castings (I saw this recipe on another video) one part perlite, and one part fine vermiculite. I also add a little mycorrhizae. Thanks for any help and all the help you have already given me!

Gary, I'm a little confused about which type of soil we use when moving a 4/5 week grown seedling into a larger cup; do we make more of the seed starting mix- with or without the vermiculite?.......... OR do we use, instead, a less expensive universal type bagged soil to fill up the larger cup, and then put the plug in it? I thought NOT to use anything other than our seed starting mix since they typically have live microbes/bacteria in them that is not necessary at this point and could cause issues using them indoors? Also, should we ALWAYS sterilize any type of bagged soil used to prevent fungus knat eggs- since we're still keeping the plants indoors? Lastly, how long should the larger plugs stay under the grow lights if it's still too cold outside to put them in the ground? I've watched numerous videos and am still a little uncertain on these steps; if you could please clarify this, I would greatly appreciate it! Thank you!! LOVE your videos and book.❣

I love your channel so much!! You’re my favorite. I have a question. We are a family of four so I was going to follow your rule of thumb about making around three or four tomato plants. But I never know how many cells to fill since you always say that sometimes a seed doesn’t germinate. So I’m not sure how many actual seeds to plant for 3 tomato plants ? You say 2 seeds per cell so do I only fill 3 cells and keep half of them?

@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 2 жыл бұрын
So remember in nature they may bake in the sun and still manage. Usually firm the starting medium well and press in the seeds. The firm medium keeps in more water under the seed and it works well. You can water more often if you want but as soon as u see gemination, just 1, let the surface dry. The roots are out and in the lower starting mix. Hi Gary! I have question. I am so disappointed in all my tomatoes! They are not producing much fruit and the fruit they are producing are small! I did some in containers and some in ground and both are doing the same. I have been taking great care of them and don't know what's wrong! Any ideas would be appreciated! Thank you!

It is always hard to say without seeing the process. Very odd both would be doing poorly. That usually means it is more Nature and temps. All you can really do is give them a big drink of water soluble fertilizer. In this case I would use the chemical type like Vigoro or Miracle Gro. They have all the nutrients and silly high Nitrogen. Just 1x. Or use an organic and feed them twice. 1x Every 7 days. Hello Gary, this is my first time working with seeds and I’ve purchased everything you said and put the boiling water on the seed start. I was wondering if you have any recommendations on edema. This is my second year growing tomatoes from seed and I was determined to conquer plant edema on my tomato starts. I use the same lights as you and water when the top has been dry for a day or 2. I keep a fan on them 8 hrs a day. My tomatoes were potted up after true leaves to solo cups. Noticed 2 days after potting up a few varieties have edema. I feel like I am at a loss growing tomato plants indoors. Can you recommend anything to stop it and to prevent it next year ?
@THERUSTEDGARDEN
@THERUSTEDGARDEN 2 жыл бұрын
I am not familiar with it. It has something to do with plants taking water up to fast. I dont use a fan. That is probably not the cause but I would shut that off. Is water left in the tray after they absorb it? If so dump out the excess. This would be to just change the equation but I dont know what the cause is. @@THERUSTEDGARDEN they don't stay in water. Last year I bottom watered and they got edema. Tried top watering and still having the same issue. I wait a couple days of tops being dry before watering. The fan is suppose to help with air flow to help prevent it. Last year I only had the fan on for 2 hrs and this year put is on a timer for 8. I will shut it off and see if it improves. Thanks

I have a question I am growing tomato plants I started off by seeds, in a grow box it is 2 foot deep 4 1/2 foot tall 4 1/2 foot long, with grow lights they are getting pretty big and bushy, how do I get them to start producing flowers because so far I’m not feeling any, i’m 100% blind… and growing indoors… and they have a full spectrum 1500 W LED light with also a full spectrum 2 foot LED bar… how can I get them to start producing? The tomato plants are a bourbon red heirloom tomatoGrowing in organic growing medium in 5 gallon cloth pots :-) and they are three months old very happy and the stocks super thick branches everywhere and just wondering what to do next? Just let them go?

So Id not know how to get them to flower. Sound like they have full spectrum. You can reduce nitrogen and increase phosphorus and potassium but that isn't usually the issue. They might just take more time. They always end up flowering. It takes awhile even if you bought from a starter plant from a nursery. Usually another month or 2. When they do start flowering the PK need to be a little higher than the N (NPK) at that point. I'm actually gonna try a fabric pot with the Tiny T tomatoes as a full size Tomato I dought I have enough room.
